Lyrics for On The Table as interpreted by a town like paris

On The Table Lyrics
On the table, the deal that kept the courts at arms length,
Stealing our thoughts with the force of their non-sequiturs - amateurs.
On the table, the view behind the legs of dancers,
Windows of chance there, lost on the trail of dissent - innocent.
Do re mi, innocent.

On the table, the deal between the thieves and exits,
Common and breathless, shrugging at what they've become - number one.
On the table, the steal that kept the courts at arms length,
Stealing our hearts with the force of the new evidence - innocent.
Do re mi, innocent.

Now the plain blondes are playing along with you x 2

On the table, our hopes become a starting pistol,
Though we have missed all the minutes, we know what weíve won.
Are we done?
On the table, the deal between the legs of mankind,
Walking a straight line, copping a plea as they went - innocent.
Do re mi, innocent.

Now the plain blondes are playing along with you x 2

On the table x 4

I think On The Table talks of the struggle between the fumbling and irresponsible representatives of law versus the 'innocent' and the psychological deals they make with each other.

ok. its a given that we LOVEEE the song, as we have bothered to look up the lyrics.
so it would be totally nice to read how others have interpreted it not how much you like it without at least giving a guess at what the hell its about.
even if its completely not correct. cause you know, their opinions.
ok, so, im thinking its about how the things in life that are 'common' are becoming 'number one' as opposed to something important like justice. Which is wrong.

'do re mi , innocent'
its as simple and easy as singing 'do re mi' , saying that you're 'innocent'
but what they are is far from that. 'copping a plea as they went -innocent' .
everything is false. like the blondes.
makes TS Eliot seem kinda understandable

i thinkk maybe the part about
"the view behind the legs of dancers,
Windows of chance there, lost on the trail of dissent"
could be refferring to prison bars? just a guess

I personally interpreted it as being about prostitution when I first heard it, especially because of this line: "On the table, the view behind the legs of dancers, windows of chance there, lost on the trail of dissent - innocent." Maybe not just prostitution, but just getting into a bad lifestyle, e.g. "the deal between the thieves and exits". "The deal that kept the courts at arms length" could just mean that it's a topic that isn't easily brought up.

The reason it sounds similar to the New Pornographers is because he's in the New Pornographers. Check out allmusic for a good rundown of the band.

As for what this songs about ... Man, you got me. I just like the song. The imagery reminds me of one of those good cop - bad cop interrogations. The table being where the deal is that's keeping the thieves and prostitutes out of jail.
