These Petals
This blackened rose
This soil all my own
Shrouding your hollowed ground
Like seeds who'll never sow
Like forgery and larceny
And my ill-gained revelry
I recite these scripted lines
While embers of a different time
Go drifting by

When every word you ever said came true
All I missed
In all of this was you

Can you see
A shadow on me, calling me to leave
Find in me
(you're the only home, you're the only home I know)
A trace of you in all this tragedy

These pieces
These shattered shards
Dancing in the moonlight
Glimmering and glistening
Preparing me for the night
I never learned to walk the surface on my own
So lately this ocean floor's been feeling more like
Home

When every word you ever said came true
All I missed in all of this was you

Can you see
A shadow on me, calling me to you
Find in me
(you're the only home, you're the only home I know)
A trace of you in all this tragedy

So take me in these fleeting moments of solitude in you
Remove this sordid fascination with shadow and remove
This shattered self for preservation
This commitment to undo
All that you forgave and give
And all you promised too
And all you promised too

Can you see
A shadow on me, calling me to you
Find in me
A trace of you in all this tragedy

Can you see
The shadow lifting; drifting home again

General Comment:I've always seen this as a person's quest for freedom from an inexorable fascination with dark things. It weighs him down and makes him feel like trash when the truth is so evident to him now, yet he is still clinging to his old ways and his preoccupation with a non-literal darkness, shown in "Remove this sordid fascination with shadow."

His mind is a battle-ravaged place, for sure, and "Can you see a shadow on me?" is his plea to God. The person knows he has acquired something evil during his life (possibly demons) and wants to know if he's just imagining things or if he has a serious problem. "I never learned to walk this surface on my own so lately this ocean floor has been feeling more like home," is a comparison to how he feels lowly and cast down and wants to be rescued from "ill-gained revelry." Just my two cents.

General Comment:Ok its defently talking about when you stuggle through a tough time in resisting sin like drinking, pornography, pride, or w.e some one may be suffering but even through all of that Jesus is in you and is with you all the way and will lift that shadow on you.

General Comment:I agree with what everyone's said but i think he could even be referring to the rapture.
Like in the verses, he's talking like he's a christian going through the motions, attending church, but not really having a relationship with god, never really found faith himself. e.g:

"I never learned to walk the surface on my own"

Then Jesus returns, and it all becomes clear to him and he realises what's happened.

"When every word you ever said came true
All I missed in all of this was you."

And the bridge just to me shows further he's been left behind.

"So take me in these fleeting moments of solitude in you"

Everyone's gone and he embracing Jesus' sacrifice and asking him to be with him through the "fleeting" 7 years of tribulation.

Like I said, bit different, but that's how I interpret it. Love Project! Cheers for another great song Andy!

General Comment:i totally agree w/ pnew that this song is about Christians who have been a Christian for so long and they go thru the motions, but in the end they have missed out on the real meaning of Christianity, and that is to be one with Christ.

General Comment:i think the shadow refers to all these problems mentioned in the verses, and their pulling him away from God. "Can you see a shadow on me?Calling me to leave." Because at the end its "Can you see the shadow lifting drifiting home again...." and when it says "drifting home" its refering him going back to God "You're the only home I know"
--i really like this song i especially like how musicly incorrect it is on purpose -when Schwab sings hes really off key. but it gives the song a uniqueness and makes it song more ernest and desprit. its good

General Comment:I love the desperation on Schwab's voice in the chorus. I also the love the pure humility found in the line "When every word you ever said came true, all I missed in all of this was you."

How many of us can relate to that? Realizing we've got this Christian "thing" down when really we haven't even caught the tip of the iceburg.

    the song gives me goosebumps
