If I may,
If I might,
Let me down, we've been,
If I say what is life,
I might be dreaming,
If I may what is right,
Summon time too see me,
He lives in his bonnet,
A face from his pocket,
Chains mowing life from trees.

Do Re Mi.
If I may,
If I might,
Wake me up, see me,
If I do and if I lie,
Find me out see me,
If I may cold as ice,
I may have too see me,
The ways in his socket,
The face from his moment,
The chains from his socket,

Do Re Mi.
Wish me good,
Wish me light,
Find me out, see me,
If I may just be quiet,
Follow hate and be me,
Hello and if I sigh,
Shake me out; TV,
If I may and if I might,
Gotta gun to bleed,
Rays in his pocket,
Rays from his wallet,
Chains from his armor,
Am I deep?

Do Re Mi.

General Comment:If I may and if I might,
    Lay me down weeping.
If I say what it's like,
    I might be dreaming.
If I may, what is right?
    Summertime see me heal.

Those years in his blonde head
    The faith from his pocket
Then change from his knowing life long dream

    Dream
    Do Re

If I may and if I might
Wake me up and - see me
If I do and if I like
Find me out - see me
If i lay cold as ice
I may now - see me heal

The ways in his soft kiss
    The praise from his momma
A change form sucking I believe

    Praise
    Re
    Do Re Mi

Kiss me girl and wish me light,
    Find me out of season.
In the rain we'll just be quiet,
    Fall on hay pretty.
Yell or wail if I sigh,
    Shake me how to be!
If I may and if I might,
    Got a gut to bleed.

    The days in his pot-head
    Raised from his mother
He takes from his own, am I deep?

    Don't rape me
    Do Re Mi

My Interpretation:I do agree that some of these lyrics might be placeholder nonsense, but the overall groups of meaningful terms along with the plaintive, haunting falsetto seems to me that this is kind of a prayer for healing or release. The "do re mi" is a basic way to remember a major scale in music; since music provided the one release in Mr. Cobain's life that was non-destructive or shameful to himself, I think he's saying that the healing feeling is complicated, but the method is not -- just sing, and hope for the best.

I like to see this as sort of a compliment to "You Know You're Right" – in that very late-era song, he sarcastically and non-cathartically wails "Pain" for a whole chorus and then "you know you're right."

Here, he reaches up high in his range and says, "Heal," and then goes for the simple "do re mi" reminder of music's potential healing power.

And the "If I may," stuff ... just sounds prayer like. Whether he was praying for a release here or knew instinctively that he wasn't going to be around for much longer – it's pretty moving to me. Always felt some weirdly strong connection to the dude, myself.

    Godspeed!

General Comment:Hey guys, radical theory here. What if the song wasn't finished lyrically? What if some parts were just placeholders, like those few lines that don't make sense or even the chorus of "Do re mi"? Didn't Kurt once say that the music came first and that he wrote the lyrics as a secondary matter?

General Comment:Jojo10, I feel the same way. I started to listen to Nirvana a couple of years ago. I thought it was just a phase but then I started to understand Kurt through his lyrics and really had alot of myself in him. Now this is just a theory, but I think it makes sense so just see my opinion.

I think he wanted other people to want understand him and see him as some great genius with some great, heartbreaking story full of emotion. He tried to make people who knew him because of his music wonder about his multi-meaning bizarre lyrics and try to understand him. He tried to make his lyrics like some sort of epic treasure hunt full of riddles and challenges so that he may be viewed as some great treasure-also the genius behind it- and for the first time, get the respect he really needed and to be truly loved (which we all need especially Kurt). I only think this because this is how I feel about myself and I see alot of myself in the things Kurt said in his lyrics. Again this is just a theory, no solid evidence, just my interpretations of Kurt's emotions. It may make sense to some, so any who dont understand: I apologize for wasting your time.

My Opinion:first of all i think it's great that so many people are still passionate about kurts music and that it still means so much to so many people. i think that everyone of you is right about the meaning of this song because the great that about music is that it can mean whatever you want it to mean for you personaly. kurt often said that people read too much into his lyrics and that they have no meaning but that doesn't mean that they don't to us. i think it's good to discuss them and maybe gives other people insight into something they haven't thought of before. it's good to talk about what a song means to you but when you get angry and start arguing about it is stupid. as for what the song meant to kurt no one can know can they. his songs were always so vague but is part of the mystery of kurt that i think has fascinated so many poeple. but i hear the line gotta a gun to bleed me and given that the song was written towards the end of his life and i think he's talking about his own pain and thoughts of suicide. or maybe it's all bullshit who knows.
    great song though

General Comment:I am italian and i want to give you my two cents about the "do re mi-dough ray me" thing. I think everybody knows that DO RE MI FA SOL LA SI are italian names of notes (for C D E F G A B). Kurt mispells RE (it should sound like the REA in the world "Reagan", yes i mean Ronald;), infact he add sort of an extra "y" and it sounds more like Ray tha Re. This makes me think the "dough ray and me" things is right.
Unfortunately, I still don't get the meaning of this song... :(

My Interpretation:Listened to this again today. Listened really closely this time. I heard different stuff. I'm not hearing the don't break me that thesaracenspecial pointed out; but I can kind of hear if I listen for it.

I'm almost positive this is what is being said:

    If I may
    And if I might
    Lay me down
    Weeping
    If I say
    What it's like
    I might be
    dreaming
    If I say
    What is right
    Summertime
    see me
    heal

    Those years in his bonnet
    The face from his pocket
    And chains holding the wind
    Lifelong dream

    - re he mi
    - re mi
    - do re mi
    - do re hee

    If I may
    And if I might
    Wake me up
    And see me
    If I do
    And If I like
    Find me how to see
    If I may
    Cold as ice
I may how to see me
    Heal

    Raised in his socket
    Raised from his moment
A chase from his socket I will need

    - re he mi (x2)
    - do re mi (x4)

    Wish me good
    Wish me light
Find me, how to see me
    In your way
    just be quiet
    Follow pain and breed me
    Yell or wail
    And if I sigh
    Sink me how
    TV
    If I may
    and if I might
    Golden good to bleed

    Praised in his pocket
    Raised from his moment
A chase from his owner in my tea

    - do re mi
    - re he hee
    - re he mi
    - do re mi (x5)

I wonder what the significance of the do re mi parts are still. He changes between: do re mi, do re hee, re mi, re he hee, re he mi" .

My Interpretation:In addition to do re mi, re mi, and don't rape me, I hear "don't break me" maybe once or twice in the song.

    anyone else hear that?
