Lyrics for Little Dawn as interpreted by a scar in the sky

Little Dawn Lyrics
Well Little Dawn walks on,
and she thinks she don't belong under the starry heights
So take a sigh as long as the war's been going on in your heart tonight
And if you want to make that light, go on and swim across the ocean
And if you want to make it right, go on and put your plan in motion
The gap is only as wide as the hollow of the sky between you, my dear
And the truth, absolute,
adding naught more profound to it than that you are here
And if you want to keep it bright, well you might have to burn a candle
And if you want to keep it tight, well you might have to learn to handle
But on the days and nights you try to breathe
and you can't believe you still walk the streets
Stretch out your weary hand to me - it's alright
And if you're not content to just believe
And if you don't consent to just let it be
Stretch out your legs and dance with me all night, tonight
It's alright

live and let live, ted leo has a very good perspective on life. alot of his songs express it, this one, first to finish and last to satrat and biomusicology does as well. its
good stuff.

I've made it a point to listen to this masterpiece at least once a day...to lift my spirits and give me my daily Ted Leo fix! I'm feinding even as I listen to it. I also must comment on the "it's alright"...sing along to it...it makes all the bad in the world literally disappear for two minutes of your life...SO glorious!

I've always felt that this song is about someone who is terrified about the war and the future and finds it a little hard to live day to day - the line "...the gap is only as wide as the hollow of the sky between you, my dear" might suggest that someone she loves is in Iraq... My take on the "it's alright" part is that you can only hear something so many times (for instance, reassurance) before it stops sounding like words and just becomes noise.

hey, it just might be mean, but when i listen to the song, i almost think it's about rape. When he says "dance with me" in the chorus, and "stretch out your legs", i just get the idea that he is talking about doing a chick, and then how he repeats "it's allright" so many times kinda gives me the creeps. If somebody has some legitmate arguement against me I would love to hear it. Does anyone else think this? or am i being stupid. Regardless, the song is great, and I listen to it all a lot, but i just wanted to post the question.

I can see it being about rape. But I always listened to it and imagined a prostitute or someone when he says "you can't believe you still walk the streets". I just see a tired hooker that he is comforting or trying to reassure. In any case, it is a very comforting song that I listen to a lot.

Really, I didn't think it had such a dark connatation. I personally think its a father or somebody worrying about their daughter. And that person comes home and he tells her its allright...about 150 times.

'stretch out your legs' is not a sexual reference. that's what you do when you get out of the car at the gas station in the middle of a long road trip or, what you do when you've been sitting at a bar all night drinking being a wallflower and someone grabs you by the hand and says "let's dance".

this is a 'carefree, stop your worrying' song.

I agree with salparadise. Also, "you can't believe you still walk the streets", I think just goes along with "she thinks she don't belong under the starry heights". In other words, she wonders about the meaning of her life and the point of going on. And he says, it's all right; when you're tired, I'll give you a hand.

amazing song.

I'm not sure what the meaning exactly is.

It's such a carefree song though.

It's alright :]

Id say this song is a call to anyone who feels the need to protest.

"But on the days and nights you try to breathe
and you can't believe you still walk the streets
Stretch out your weary hand to me - it's alright
And if you're not content to just believe
And if you don't consent to just let it be
Stretch out your legs and dance with me all night, tonight
It's alright "

I really like "And if you're not content to just believe
And if you don't consent to just let it be"

I agree 100% with post above(?) this by votre_mere. I feel the need to protest every time I hear this song and can't sit still. It's motivates me. I'm motivated now, listening to it. And I adore the intro. I'm going to put my plan in motion.

i think this song could be about maybe a prostitute?!
or possibly rape as another post says

"you can't believe you still walk the streets..." and "Well Little Dawn walks on,
and she thinks she don't belong under the starry heights"

From Mr. Leo himself:

"Little Dawn, herself, is an amalgam of people (including myself), who are just trying to figure it all out — how life goes on so mundanely where she's standing while lives are shattering elsewhere. It brings her/my life to the point of shattering just trying to fathom it all. You lose the thread, and think some pretty desperate thoughts. What's there to do? I suppose keep dancing — keep moving — we'll do it together, and maybe it'll feel alright. And when I say "it's alright," I'm trying to convince myself as much as I am someone else."

I got this from an eMusic interview where people asked questions and he answered them. Although, I'm not too sure that I'll be able to listen to the song in the same way. Thanks...

Ok, one more thing:

The repetition of "it's alright" is very claustrophobic. It reminds me of a person on the brink of a panic attack (or a similar situation.) It's like she needs to shake it off by telling herself that she's okay, and everything's going be alright.
