Salty leave , salty leave
Tell me the one about the friend you knew
And the last good night that we toasted too.
Salty leave,
Stay for me, stay for me
We drank wine in the matinee
And the spotlight showed what it chased away
Stay for me
She saw my comb over, her hourglass body
She has problems with drinking milk
And being school tardy
She'll loan you her toothbrush
She'll bartend your party
Kill me, kill me
I called and called, but I can't get through,
Said he's on his own, but his own is you
Kill me
Tell me the one about the friend you knew
And the last good night that we toasted too.
Salty leave,
Stay for me, stay for me
We drank wine in the matinee
And the spotlight showed what it chased away
Stay for me
She saw my comb over, her hourglass body
She has problems with drinking milk
And being school tardy
She'll loan you her toothbrush
She'll bartend your party
Kill me, kill me
I called and called, but I can't get through,
Said he's on his own, but his own is you
Kill me

"We drank wine in the matinee, and the spotlight showed what it chased away" -- Chances are, the spotlight is showing some sort of romance, however that is chased away simply by the fact that they are drinking wine in the matinee. This is an activity that is not likely appealing to a young girl (especially one that would rather be bartending your party, hint hint, watch for the patterns)
"She saw my combover, her hourglass body" -- basically she starts to see how old he is.... he's got a combover, she's still got that teenage hourglass body.
"She has problems with drinking milk and being school tardy" -- I like sabrinaKOL's comment that it could be about giving head, I had never thought of that before, but I don't think that's it. This line is contrasting, again, the old and the young. Old people notoriously drink milk, to promote bone health and whatnot (it's an exaggeration) and again, something unappealing to a young girl, who is worried about being late for school....... she's still in school!!
"She'll loan you her toothbrush, she'll bartend your party" -- just accentuating the wild teenage personality of this girl, and further emphasizing the fact that she is not interested in mundane, grownup activities such as drinking wine in the matinee, and drinking milk.
"I called and I called, but I can't get through. Said he's on his own, but his own is you" -- this is when the fallout it finally shown light. He's trying to get ahold of her, but some other dude's picking up. Brilliant really, 'cause this guy's saying he's on his own, but if his own is this girl, then really he's on her... so the singer is finally realizing that she's no longer interested, she's found some young guy to float her boat.
I really shouldn't have needed to explain this in so much depth, but I hope it makes some sense to you now.
Teens mostly start out drinking wine and beer so its not necessarily an old thing. Comb over?? Caleb talks about it on the next song in the album that he is balding at such a young age. the comb over her hourglass body, is referring to him being on top during sex and it's also referring to how she is way too pretty for him.
The milk thing could refer to not swallowing or giving head in general. Although I think it could also illustrate her own flaws milk refers to her health and she's got no concern for it and being tardy to school is another example how she doesn't have her shit together. the slutty girls at my HS were always the ones ditching school. This point is important because after that he mentions how mature, caring, wild free spirited, social-butterfly, loaning a toothbrush is intimate and she's willing to do that with more than just caleb and bartenders are responsible and able to socialize with people. She's probably "serving" lots of people and maintains an appearance of control. All these things are about her character.
This girl broke his heart and cheated on him with his friend. He's asking his friend he says he's on his own but his friend is lying, hence his own is her.
"salty leave" could very well mean semen or tears from crying. However, with the further context of this song, I personally think it's tears (theres so few words, why would they need to repeat this imagery? i think sex is a great part of this song, but not the focus)
"tell me the one about the friend you knew
and the last good night that we toasted too." Because this girl is crying and trying to go, he's trying to calm her down, talk to her a bit and keep her from going.
"Salty leave,
stay for me, stay for me" She's still crying, so he plainly says it- stay for me.
"We drank wine in the matinee
and the spotlight showed what I chased away" i interpret this in two different ways. first, "regular" wine (like red) isn't necessarily a celebratory drink (like champagne would be(and i specify this simply because it isn't))- it's usually drunk for pleasure or health- and in this case, a spotlight came on- he realized something- that she isn't healthy and she probably shouldn't be drinking the wine in the first place. and that health "problem" was induced by him. OR, he purposely wanted to drink wine with her intending and hoping for this girl to get drunk and now (sober- he can see the [spot]light), after realizing his mistake, he's already chased this girl away.
"She saw my comb over, her hourglass body
she has problems with drinking milk
and being school tardy
She'll loan you her toothbrush
she'll bartend your party"
I think this part is very important to as why this girl wont stay. Someone on youtube gave a great point about being school tardy--first of all, we can all now agree that with references to the body, like her hourglass shape or even the probable reference to semen by salty leave- that 'she had problems with drinking milk' is not something as arbitrary as lactose intolence but that she doesn't like swallowing cum. with that, being school tardy sounds ALOT like her just being late. on her period. (school not referring to her own age, but to the kid inside her) which now gives light to the rest of the song. she's crying because of this. she won't stay with him because this was only intended to be a one night stand- 'she'll loan u her tooth brush'. he realizes when they were drinking wine that she probably shouldnt be because of the baby. or that he 'chased away her health'. or just chased her away in general by impregnating her. see how she takes notice of his comb over? probably another reason she may be telling herself to leave- 'he's too old'. and also, SHE'S the one who notices her own hourglass body- probably in regret? in fear?
"Kill me, kill me
I called and called, but I can't get through,
said he's on his own, but his own is you"
he's trying to call her, get back to her (or talk her out of this decision) and she apparently says that he (most likely the baby) is on his own. she got an abortion? or gave the baby up for adoption? and caleb instinctively says, 'on his own?' 'his own is YOU' that baby is not only your own flesh n blood and needs you to survive, but you're his mother, in every sense of the word. and this regret/sorrow obviously pains caleb to the point of him expressing 'killllll meeeee'
quite simply, these guys are brilliant artists.
salty leave = semen
kill me = shouldnt of done it but too late
just my opinion
What does this make you think of?
CUMSHOT BABY FUCK YEAAAAAAH! :)
Someone told me which i believe is true that a girl Caleb was with cheated on him i'm sure they said with another band member not sure who but it was written after he'd been cheated on.
This lyric kind of gives it away.
"I called and called, but I can't get through,
said he's on his own, but his own is you"
