I wrote for luck
They sent me you
I sent for juice
You give me poison
I order a line
You form a queue
You try something hard
There's nothing else you can do
Well that much
I've been trained
I can sit and stand
And beg and rollover
And I don't read
I just guess
There's more than one sign
But its getting less
And you were wet
But you're getting dryer
You used to speak the truth
But now you lair
You used to speak the truth
But now you clever

And wrote for luck
They sent me you
I sent for juice
You give me poison
I order a line
You form a queue
Try something hard
There's nothing else you can do
And you were wet
But you're getting dryer
You used to speak the truth
But now you clever
You used to speak the truth
But now you clever

and when its hot
You start to melt
'cause you're not made of king
You're made of chocolate
And when it cold
You turn to crack
You keep on piling out
Not pulling back

General Comment:14 Years old when I first heard this song in 1988 and my take on it, if you listen to the lyric:

you were wet but you're getting dryer now,
you used to speak the truth but now you're clever,
you used to speak the truth but now you're liar.

To me, this meant you're naive but you're learning.

Looking at the other comments it's easy to see that people can relate with their own interpretation of the lyrics and sound of the Mondays,

General Comment:I sent for Juice I sent for drugs here its coke cos later they form a line which is 99 percent of the time coke but well the tweekers you Crystal Meth anyway
They sent me you refers to the Drug which ever it is I guessed coke.
You give me poison thats the drug you never knew what was in the drugs you got
I hold the line means he is chopping up the line of Coke I assumed and all his mates for a que of people who wanna a lil line.
Try something hard is there anything else you can do shows there mentality not giving a fuck will do any drug Heroin as well.

And when its hot well thats the drug and whe you start to melt is refering to your inside going bonkers the RUSH of the drug fuck Im bored to go on didnt any of you xxxxs ever take drugs ha ha

General Comment:Considering that these lyrics came from the twisted mind of Shaun Ryder.. Your guess is as good as mine when it comes to meaning. In many ways, I think its just a flow of consciousness in the lyrics. Anyone who has listened to the Happy Mondays extensively probably has come to the realization that a majority of Shaun's lyrics are well.. out there.. but then again.. what did you expect from the Happy Mondays! If you are still a little confused then I direct you to check out this video on YouTube.. youtu.be/… - "Shaun Ryder, the Ecstasy and Agony"

None the less... there is no doubt that Happy Mondays changed music for the better.. Still love them to this day..

General Comment:This song is about going out, taking acid, having a bad trip and getting really paranoid!

Most of the lines are describing how Shaun's paranoid mind is perceiving the world and the people around him. I've always had this idea that he's singing this one to Bez. Like the two of them are out roaming the pubs n clubs of Manchester on acid while Shaun's world is starting to fall apart.

Quite a few of the lyrics here are wrong but if I tell you it doesn't say ... 'You try something hard there's nothing else you can do'

it says .... 'try and THINK hard there's nothing else you can do' you get the picture I hope.

Shaun and Bez were rather fond of their microdots back in the day :)

General Comment:I think this song is about fake friends, how hard it is to find a genuine person, and Shaun’s struggle to relate to those around him.

“You used to speak the truth but now you’re clever” refers to how Shaun used to be able to shite-talk with his friend about anything, but now their airs of intelligence make them hard to relate to anymore.

Apart from that line, the song’s meaning kind of went over my head until I saw the video which is in a club setting. “I hold the line, you form a que” refers to Shaun holding his friend’s place in line at the bar. Despite this, the friend forms his own line separate to Shaun’s. This is symbolic of how the friend is not interested in Shaun or his circle anymore, but moves away to form a different “que”.

“I sent for juice, you give me poison” Considering the club setting, this is probably a reference to the friend spiking Shaun’s drink, and to backstabbing and deception in general.

“I don’t read, I just guess” is a testimonial to Shaun’s casual attitude to life, which is so different from that of his try-hard friends.

The final verse is about facades. “When it’s hot you start to melt, ‘cause you’re not made of cheese, you’re made of chocolate” - Their shows of strength and intelligence are but shows, for when things get heated they can’t handle it anymore.

General Comment:and when its hot you start to melt (the old melting cheese face from swallowing too much diddleys) cos your not made of genes your made of chocolate (i think that is quite an artistic piece of imagery as me and my mates usually associate melting face with cheese which isnt quite as pleasant as chocolate!)

when its cold u tend to crack (lips cracking)
u keep on piling out but not putting back (you keep on being sick and not eating anything)

for fuck sake people im a 17 year old a level student ive only heard this tune about 5 times and i understand it better than any of you lot

General Comment:This tune has some quite obvious meanings and some quite obscure ideas

fuck knows what the first two lines mean

'i sent for juice you give me poison' he is in a club tripping on pills as the video clearly shows. i sent for juice (from the bar) you give me poison (booze)#

i hold the line (at the bar) you form a queue (get the drinks) try anything hard (hard drugs) is there anything else you can do? (hard drugs)

you were wet (sweating your tits off on the old dids)

u used to speak the truth but now your clever (you used to chat shit when off your head, like me, but now your educated and i can no longer relate)

    ill continue this later mateees

General Comment:A. It's not "you keep on piling out, not pulling back", it's "you keep on piling on, not putting back".
    B. It's not "turn to crack" nor "start to crack", it's "tend to crack".
    C. Like said there, it's "you're not made of gene" instead of "you're not made of king" (don't know where you got that from)
    D. Also said before, it's not "order a line" it's "hold the line".
