I know you loved him, a long time ago
Even now in my arms, you still want him I know
But darling this time, your memories die
When you hold me tonight, don't close your eyes

Don't close your eyes, let it be me
Don't pretend it's him, in some fantasy
Darling just once, let yesterday go
And you'll find more love than you'll ever know
Just hold me tight, when you love me tonight
And don't close your eyes

Maybe I've, been a fool, holding on all this time
Lying here in your arms, knowing he's in your mind
But I keep hoping someday, that you'll see the light
Let it be tonight and don't close your eyes

Don't close your eyes, let it be me
Don't pretend it's him, in some fantasy
Darling just once, let yesterday go
And you'll find more love than you'll ever know
Just hold me tight, when you love me tonight
And don't close your eyes

Don't close your eyes, let it be me
Don't pretend it's him, in some fantasy
Darling just once, let yesterday go
And you'll find more love than you'll ever know
Just hold me tight, when you love me tonight
And don't close your eyes

Just hold me tight, when you love me tonight
And don't close your eyes

    My Interpretation

Keith Whitley's death is a sad and tragic loss but his beautiful Country Songs will live Forever in Our Hearts!-Case in Point-his first #1 hit Don't Close Your Eyes. Again, the writing is secondary but it is the Feeling and Emotion in Whitley's Sad Voice that clinches it for me!-it's as if Keith loved Lorrie so much that the song is ultimately heartbreaking and sad. Make no mistake about it, Don't Close Your Eyes is not a happy song by any means-but then again, most Good Country is infused with heartache, hard living and true love-Keith Whitley walked life's lonely miles. Keith's Sad, Honest and Beautiful Country/Soul/Rock Voice and his driven Fender Telecaster will always ring true. Keith Whitley -among the True Immortals of Country and Rock! I will never forget him. Rock in Peace Keith!
