From the very start
It came apart
It broke up into pieces and
There was a chance and I missed it
It could risked it

And I put myself in your hands

Cause you're not just anyone
You're a ladder to the sun
Oh you're not just anyone
You're a ladder to the sun

I can run my courses
Opposing forces
And oh man I just...

Oh if you want me then you can have me
Oh take me, baby grab me
Oh if you want me then you can have me

Cause you're not just anyone
You're a ladder to the sun
Oh you're not just anyone
You're a ladder to the sun

Oh now boy what you mean I've done
You set a course that you couldn't run
Oh now boy what you mean I've done

I had it all and I risked it
I had it all and I risked it all
I risked it all

Oh I risked it all
A ladder to the
A Ladder to the sun
A ladder to the
A ladder to the sun
A ladder to the
A ladder to the sun
I had it all and I risked it all
A ladder to the
A ladder to the sun
A ladder to the
A ladder to the sun
A ladder to the
A ladder to the sun
I had it all and I risked it all
And I risked it
I had it all and I risked it all
I had it all and I risked it all

General Comment:*Sounds like the last part of the first stanza is "Icharistic."

My Interpretation:I think..it's about him liking a girl obviously. And he put a lot of his sole into it. he really loves her. But he missed his chance and now it's over. At least for her it is. And f she does someday want him back he'll let her. I really love this song mainly because I'm in a place so similar to this, currently.

General Comment:This song to me is defenately about a person that had the girl/boy of his/her dreams. But as time moved on they started taking them for granted. They broke up/divorced. They had a chance to mend things and reclaim their love but they missed it. Thats when the person in the song realizes that the other isn't just anybody. She is as chris martin sings, a ladder to the sun. The perfet partner and he know that he will never have her.

"I had it all and I missed it all" is the defining verse here.

Means: I found happiness and I let it slip through my fingers.

Sad song really. It sort of mirrors my experience with a person. A person I truly fell in love with but the most she will be to me is a memory.

General Comment:This song, in my honest opinion, is about how you love someone so much, and you took her for granted, and you lost her and all the happiness in life she gave you.

I know, because this song describes my past. I had the girl of my dreams, and I love her so much, and I had it all and I risked it all. Because I took her for granted.

There was a chance for me to fix things, to work everything out, and I didnt.

    From the very start
    It came apart
It broke up into pieces and
There was a chance and I missed it
    It could risked it
--------- From the start, things started to fall apart slowly, there was a chance to fix things, but he/she missed it.

And I put myself in your hands
------He/she put themselves in the hands of the person they love, as in, they told them everything they feel for them. They let all their emotions out, and told them how much they love them. And it is up to the person they love to decide what next.

    Cause you're not just anyone
You're a ladder to the sun
    Oh you're not just anyone
You're a ladder to the sun
--------This person is not just another person you like, this person is truly the person you love with all of your heart, you would do anything for them. They aren't just anyone, they are someone special who ahs impacted your life like no other.

    I can run my courses
    Opposing forces
    And oh man I just...
-----You can live life like everyone else, and move on, facing all the hardships ahead of you, but you realize you face them alone. And you have no one to blame, but yourself. I think the last line, describes how he is speechless for what he has done.

Oh if you want me then you can have me
Oh take me, baby grab me
Oh if you want me then you can have me
------If the person loves he/she back, take them back, grab them. They are at your disposal, because they love that person so much.

Oh now boy what you mean I've done
You set a course that you couldn't run
Oh now boy what you mean I've done
-----Not really sure here, but with the lyrics the way they are, it is almost as if he is asking someone (God?) a rhetorical question. Asking "What do you mean, I've done all this myself?" And that whoever they ask, responds that you set a course yourself, that you couldn't run. That in time, you will realize you have no one to blame but yourself.

I had it all and I risked it
I had it all and I risked it all
    I risked it all
------They had everything, happiness, the person they love, no worries, they were living during the happiest point in their life. Just knowing you had the person you love, and you were together, means everything to you.

They had it all, and they risked it all. They took them for granted, and lost them.

Sorry to write so much, but not a lot of comments on what this song is really about. Thought I'd try and sum it up on how it appears to me, and how I relate to it. Hope it helps everybody

General Comment:Tis interesting that this beautiful imagery of being a ladder to the sun infers that they're going to burn you to a crisp.
I have no doubt its said in a loving way, but yeah, just a thought.

When he's saying "I had it all and I risked it all".... could that be inferring he risked everything good he already had (friendship or such that he had with this woman) to further their relationship? That he risked that pain in being burnt by soemthing so bright and wonderful, and also losing their friendship/what they had before?

General Comment:I agree with most of you, it is one of their best, and should have booted off one of the more dull songs off X&Y. This song is so pure and honest...it really captures what it's like (to me) to be so thankful and devoted to a person you're in love with. I always thought it was 'Oh don't take me, baby, grab me.' But I don't think it is...it might be '\oh no take me'...

General Comment:This should have been on X & Y - Talk wasn't nearly as good as this piece. I'd say it's one of my all-time favorite coldplay songs.

    And oh man I just..."

    Has to be:

    "I can run my courses
    and Opposing forces
And oh man are just mortals"

Such a good way to describe the love between man and woman.
I also can see in my life that the girl of my dreams is a ladder to the sun... to daylight. light and love.

General Comment:This is in my top three Coldplay songs along with Fix You and Politik. I found it interesting that they mention a ladder to the sun in Talk:

So you take a picture of something you see
In the future where will I be?
You can climb a ladder up to the sun
Or a write a song nobody has sung or do
Something that’s never been done, do
    Something that’s never been done

I wonder if there's a connection between the two songs.
