Father I've sinned
Over and over and over and over again
Sorry my friends
I'm such a mess
I'm doing the best I can
She says "where ya goin'? where ya been?"
She says "I don't want you hanging out with them"
She leaves like she's never coming back again on and on
It goes on and on yea

She says "I don't love you like I loved you before"
She says, she says "I don't love you anymore"

And mother I've tried over and over and over to open my eyes
Look at my life
Tell me when did I die
Cause I'm not alive
Flip through the script and tell me what it says
Skip through the story tell me how it ends
She says that we're probably better off as friends
On and on and yea

She says "I don't love you like I loved you before"
She says, she says yea
She says "I don't love you.
I don't love you anymore."
She says, she says "I don't love you. I don't love you. I don't love you anymore."
She says she says she says "where ya going"
I know I know I know I know I know
She says she says she says "where ya going"
I know I know I know I know I know
She says she says she says "where ya going"
I know I know I know I know I know
She says she says she says "where ya going"
I know I know I know I know I know
What I want

You, you called the police
You called them on me
And I want to go anywhere but home
I, I'm done listening to what's wrong with me
Cause it goes on and on and on and on YEA

She says "I don't love you like I loved you before"
She says she says, yea
She says "I don't love you. I don't love you anymore"
She says, she says "I don't love like I love you anymore."

General Comment:I was just browsing and felt I had to mention that the "Father" and "Mother" parts of the song almost certainly have nothing to do with actual parents, and if they do, it's secondary. "Forgive me Father, for I have sinned" is a pretty obvious part of the Catholic/Christian confession. The Mother reference is just the complement, if not part of an extended metaphor for the confessional, since Mary (i.e. "Mother") is bound to come up in prayers for absolution.

I mention this not because I think the song is religious, but because it's a more a poetic way of expressing guilt about a girlfriend (why would the mom say "I think we're better off as friends"?). The song conveys personal guilt and attachment mixed with resentment about the girlfriend (eg "where ya going, where ya been..." is her being overly-controlling). So the singer's description of the song's meaning lines up with the song itself, which should always be the case but sometimes isn't.

General Comment:I love this song. It's so powerful and catchy.
Heard it the first time when I was watching the music video a couple years ago. I about cried. It sucked me in and I've been an Unwritten Law fan every since.

General Comment:what I love about this song (besides its aesthetic beauty) is its alternate meanings.
theres the obvious two (mother or girlfriend), which are both extremely meaningful, and relateable. and either way, its a wonderful song. love it.

    General Comment:Father ive sinned
over and over and over and over again
sorry my friends, im such a mess
im doing the best i can

THis verse to me is like a confession he is making and also just telling him friends his sorry for the fucked up things he has done... its kinda of self explanatory

she says where ya goin where ya been
she says i dont want you hanging out with them
she leaves like she is never coming back again

This part i think its his mom visting him and asking him lke where have you been etc. cause she is pissed cause he is to wild... yet she lives the room after screaming at him like she is never going to come back yet she will always be there for him cause its his son

she says i dont love you like i loved you before
    she says she says
i dont love you any more

this part is him talking to his mom telling him his problems with his gf

and mother ived tried, over and over to open my eyes
look at my life and tell me when did i die
    cuz im not alive

still talking to his mom .. asking her for directions

flip through the script and tell me what it says
skip through the story tell me how it ends

you know how when we are unsure about somehting we ask our parents if everything is oing to be ok.... and if they say yes.. it just makes us feel better... i guess that is what he is doing here .. getting comfort from his mom

she says that were probably better off as friends

here he is telling his mom what his gf said again...

she says i dont love you like i love'd you before
    she says she says
yeah, she says i dont love you i dont love you anymore
she says, she says i dont love you, i dont love you
    i dont love you anymore
she said she said she said where ya goin'

you, you call the police, you called them on me

his talking to his gf like telling her look ehat you have done to me .. that you even called the police!!

and i want to go anywhere but home
i im done with listening to whats wrong with me
cuz it goes on and on and on and on yeahh

here he is telling his gf that he doesnt even want to go home so therewas no need for the police cause he hates it there cause he is never good enough!

she says i dont love you like i loved you before
    she says she says
yeahh she says i dont love you i dont love you anymore
she says she says, i dont love you

General Comment:Mmm, someone else said this but I'm too lazy to look back at their username to give them full credit. But I agree, "I don't like the chorus, but the rest of the song is good."

Yeah. I like the first and second verses, but I always feel like the chorus doesn't really fit in with the rest of the song. Just my opinion, most of you probably don't agree but that's cool. It just kind of sounds like a different song, like I understand a lot of songs go from slow to fast and stuff, but they just sound too different. Ha, I don't even know what I'm saying.

I'm in love with the first verse though.
    :]

General Comment:i think this entire song is him talking to himself.. debriefing about an extremely passionate, volatile relationship.. the love/hate kind and its hard to get over.. the sinning part is all the things he may have done wrong in the relationship.. hes just trying to pick up the pieces of his life that have fallen apart in the wake of this relationship.. or maybe thats just me..

General Comment:The whole mother and father thing is him praying.
Maybe its drugs, probably is but he keeps "sinning" and it's messing him up & i think he changed not for the better and his girlfriend is walking out.
