it's like he had a relationship with a girl that went really bad and both of them were responsible. maybe they both were so mean to each other that one had to put it to an end. and as he did, she finally somehow realized how much she loved him. he has to take all the blame although he didn't even expect her to be hurt, that's why he thinks he's gonna find a four leak clover (something rare to find, he's ironic !)
he's fulled with remorse cause of the way they did let things rot and feels sorry to hurt her although he didn't mean to and maybe angry to discover now that it's too late that she can't get over him, although he did force himself into getting over her (you can't tell me that now, this far down the line that you'll never get over me !!!)
everything is wasted because of some misunderstanding, and there is no way back, that's why he feels like he wants to burn up and die.
if it was only about him being sorry for hurting his ex-g., words 'i want to burn up and die' would be way too strong then... and as he's singing the song it seems like he's the one who can't get over her because he still loves her but doesn't think that he was important for her - it's just a guy and she's probably gonna get over him quite soon.
and also then the line ' i'll find a four-leaf clover ' makes sense as he's the one who needs luck and some hope. he's trying to be optimistic, and says he's gonna be fine eventually (cause he's not gonna burn up and die really:)
This song, to me, describes how he has just broken up with his girlfriend and he is sorry because she still loves him and feels heartbroken.
