Lyrics for Arc of Time as interpreted by elishacuthbertfan

Arc of Time Lyrics
You can make a plan
Carve it into stone
Like a feather falling
It is still unknown
Until the clock speaks up
Says it's time to go
You can choose the high
Or the lower road
You might clench your fist
You might fork your tongue
As you curse or praise
All the things you've done
And the faders move
And the music dies
As we pass over
On the arc of time

So you nurse your love like a wounded dove
In the covered cage of night
Every star is crossed by frenetic thoughts
That separate and then collide
And they twist like sheets until you fall asleep
Then they finally unwind
It's a black balloon
It's a dream you'll soon deny

I hear if you make friends
With Jesus Christ
You will get right up
From that chalk outline
And you'll get dolled up
And you'll dress in white
All to take your place
In his chorus line

And then in you'll come with those marching drums
In a saintly compromise
No more whisky slurs, no more blonde haired girls
For your whole eternal life
And you'll do the dance that was choreographed
At the very dawn of time
See, I told you son
The day would come

You will die, you die, you die, you die
You will die, you die, you die, you die
You will die, you die, you die, you die
You will die, you die, you die

To the deepest part of the human heart
The fear of death expands
Until we crack the code we have always known
But could never understand
On a circuit board we will soon be born

Again and again and again and again
And again and again and again and again
And again and again and again and again
And again and again and again and again

"you can choose the high,

it's "road" instead of "row"

^^ agreed. Though I will go as far to say that "I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning" is his best work to date. I hope he really gets recognized for it.

Good song though... I guess it's just about death/salvation etc... The lyrics in Digital Ash are more cryptic than the majority of Oberst's work.

In the song "Gold Mine Gutted" Oberst mentions author Don DeLillo. DeLillo's novel "White Noise" is directly concerned with our society's fear of death. The line about the fear of death in the human heart really reminds of me of the novel, which I highly reccomend. It seems like "Digital Ash..." is largely concerned with the fear of death and drugs. I find it ironic that most of Conor's audience is straight edge (I'm assuming) while he's an admitted cocaine addict.

eh. this is probably the worst song on the cd, not that it's bad or anything. it reminds me of this joke band "i hate you when you're pregnant." bright eyes is amazing though, and the most of the other songs on this cd are really good.

this one is okay..

i like this song, its different. but thats what conor was going for, i think..he has 2 new cds- "im wide awake its morning" which is more like his old stuff and "digital ash" which is more experimental, or dare i say, digital. i like the new sound of "digital ash". i give him props for trying it.

it reminds me a lot of "loch lomand" especially with the 'high road/low road' references, and the 'die' which is a popular line though not used as the verb in the celtic song.
just what i thought of it.

I also read White Noise by DeLillo, this past summer and can never get the book out of my head when listening to the CD. Even before I heard the reference to him in Gold Mine Gutter, I thought of the book during the plane crash sequence. There is a very similar scene (plane crash, pilot screaming) in the book. Having read the book then listened to Bright Eyes, I believe has allowed me to appreciate Digital Ash alot more.
