Lyrics for At the Bottom of Everything as interpreted by Hunter

At the Bottom of Everything Lyrics
So there’s this woman, and she was, um, on an airplane, and she’s flying to meet her fiancé, sailing high above the, the largest ocean on planet earth, and she was seated next to this man who, you know, she had tried to start conversations, and, only – really the only thing she’d heard him say was just to order his, his Bloody Mary, and . . . and she’s sittin’ there, and she’s readin’ this really arduous magazine article about a third world country that she couldn’t even pronounce the, the name of, and she’s feeling very bored, and very . . . despondent. And then, uh . . . suddenly . . . there was this huge mechanical failure and one of the, the engines gave out, and they started just falling - thirty thousand feet - the, uh, pilot’s on the, on the microphone and he’s, he’s saying, um, ”I’m sorry, I’m sorry, oh my God, I’m . . . I’m sorry,” and apologizing and, and she looks at the man, and she, and she says, she says, she says, “Where are we going?" And, uh, and he looks at her . . . and he says, “We’re going to a party . . . it, it’s a birthday party . . . it’s your birthday party, happy birthday, darling. We love you very, very, very, very, very, very, very much.” And then um, he starts hummin’ this little tune, and, and, uh, it kinda goes like this, it’s kinda - one, two, one, two, three, four

We must talk in every telephone, get eaten off the web
We must rip out all the epilogues from the books that we have read
Into the face of every criminal strapped firmly to a chair
We must stare, we must stare, we must stare

We must take all of the medicines too expensive now to sell
Set fire to the preacher who is promising us hell
Into the ear of every anarchist that sleeps but doesn't dream
We must sing, we must sing, we must sing

And it'll go like this, all right

While my mother waters plants, my father loads his gun
He says, "Death will give us back to God
Just like the setting sun
Is returned to the lonesome ocean"

And then they splashed into the deep blue sea
Oh, it was a wonderful splash!

We must blend into the choir, sing as static with the whole
We must memorize nine numbers and deny we have a soul
Into this endless race for property and privilege to be won
We must run, we must run, we must run

We must hang up in the belfry where the bats and moonlight laugh
We must stare into a crystal ball and only see the past
Into the caverns of tomorrow with just our flashlights and our love
We must plunge, we must plunge, we must plunge

And then we'll get down there
Way down to the very bottom of everything
And then we'll see it, oh, we'll see it! We'll see it! We’ll see it!

Oh, my morning's coming back
The whole world’s waking up
All the city buses swimming past
I'm happy just because
I found out I am really no one

I don't like the intro. But I love the song. I reckon "I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning" is Mr. Oberst's best work to date.

ahh i love it. that's about conformity and what we must do to succeed throughout life

We must hang up in the belfry where the bats in moonlight laugh
We must stare into a crystal ball and only see the past
And in the caverns of tomorrow with our flashlights and our love
We must plunge, we must plunge, we must plunge

we only know about the past and how uncertain the future is but we have to keep going

alright,so i have yet to figure out what the fuck the beginning of the song is all about..but i must say that i do absolutely adore his talking voice.dear god.
the song itself is definately about conforming and the pressure of finding your own identity. Thats what I get out of it,at least..

how do you mean, what the beginnings about? it just fits in with his tendency to put lengthy, non musical intros on his cds. i love it! the story is so wonderful. i especially love how it seems like hes just making it all up on the spot, whether or not he is. 'happy birthday darling!'.
'set fire to the preacher who is promising us hell' how long have i wanted to do this very thing....
'i'm happy just because i found out i am really no one.' aww...its depressing but very true. we are nobody.

i think the story is there to emphasise this part:
"Death will give us back to god,
just like the setting sun
is returned to the lonesome ocean."
because he then continues the story to say they crashed into the ocean, just like the sun returns to the ocean.

ohh, and he says "it was a wonderful splash". and "Death will give us back to god,
just like the setting sun
is returned to the lonesome ocean." is even an optimistic view. and with the man telling her its her birthday and they love her, its optimistic in such a situation..so i think the whole song is supposed to shed positive light on death.

Ok so here is my analysis.

*Intro*
I think that the intro is really imperative to the entire song, because this guy, whom of which this supposed woman has never talked to, is telling her that they're going to a birthday party. Birthday party is really just a term that screams they're begining a new life now, and that she shouldn't be sad, maybe because he really doesn't care about life, or maybe he sees some sort of light that she doesnt.
*first stanza*
It is saying "we must talk in every telephone, get eaten off the web" These are just things that people get caught up into. It's like everyone in society has to "live life for a purpose" rather than actually live life. They're always doing busy work, instead of making themselves feel better. Also, it is putting social implication into question. "Into the eye of every criminal, we must stare" Instead of treating them like normal humans who might have made a mistake or two, we shall ostricize them, and distance ourselves from them.
*second Stanza*
"We must take all of the medicines too expensive now to sell
Set fire to the preacher who is promising us hell
And in the ear of every anarchist who sleeps but doesn't dream"

He seems to be making fun of society as a whole, rather than make ourselves better for us, we are attempting to make ourselves better for other people. The preacher may not even be a preacher, he may just be someone who is looking down on you, that you try to conform. He is also making fun of people without vision, people who just want to be a cliche. ie the anarchist.

*third stanza*
It seems insanely funny that his father and mother are doing this busy work, and talking about getting back to god. His father is loading his gun, and it doesn't seem as if he's really trying to do anything really, he's being a hypocrit in a sense. **IMO**

"And then they splashed into the deep blue sea
It was a wonderful splash "
Death isn't something to be afraid of, to be afraid of the enevitable is to be ignorant. We all must prepare, we all must be okay with whom we are.

*fifth stanza*
We're blending into society, with this stanza. We memorize social security numbers, but we don't know who we are. We sing in the choir, but don't know the words. We're trying to be something we're not, for the "greater good" of our concious. He's saying we've gotta leave this idea that money has power over us. Even though it might, it shouldn't be the number one priority.
*sixth stanza*
We still put too much onto material goods. We look back as if we have failed society, just because we don't have things. We tend to look back rather than forward, on mistakes rather than opportunity.

and finally

"I'm happy just because
I found out I am really no one"

I find true solice in this line. In the greater picture of things, we as humans are simply a pixle in the huge picture that is the world and history. He's not really found out anything, but he's found the biggest thing. It may be sarcasm, i'm not exactly sure.

I love this song, but i think you guys have kind of missed the boat on the meaning. the guy sitting next to the woman on the plane is responsible for the plane going down. he can do this vile act because when he dies, he's reborn into paradise, thus, a birthday party. It's a song about contradictions and forces aligning against each other. a wonderful splash is a contradiction. all are dying, some are being born. for every mother who waters plants (bringing life) a father loads his gun (bringing death). The sun returning to the sea is not hopeful, it's inevitable. no matter how you strive to live... you will inevitably die.

If you deny you have a soul, you accept that you are bound to earth. this is all you get, no heaven, no re-birth. You cannot fall prey to religious fanatacism, and at the same time you will be free to live a full life because you also have no hell to fear (so you can burn the preacher)

for Conor it is apparrently a bold thing to just continue to stay alive, although he concedes that the best way to do it is to blend into the herd and conform, or get into the middle where it's safe, as the brave ones on the fringe are the ones that eventually get picked off. the best chance to stay alive is to become indistinguishable from everyone else and be no one.

Kind of sad really.

When connor talks about death as "the setting sun" it reminds me of how in, no lies just love, he says 'So Please forgive what I have done. No you can't stay mad th the setting sun."

I just remembered hearing a reference to it before, so I thought I'd post.

The more I listen to the song the more I think that the beginning, although it kind of ties in with the actual song itself,is just another brilliant beginning to the cd that he always does.
p.s-if you've met conor,IM me
