Lyrics for Shake the Sheets as interpreted by weezerific:cutlery

Shake the Sheets Lyrics
I said, "I wonder how it is I'm standing here, while war is raging everywhere under the sky?
I feel defeated here by everything, cheated here by everyone on every side.
I want to take you to a quiet place, and never ask the meaninglessness to reply.
When will we get an hour to celebrate, find the time to breathe a sigh?

I've been working too hard to be living, and later
Walking all night, until I'm shivering, and is it
Wasting the time that I've been given, to maybe
Wait for the day of oblivion?

I want to take it to the president, him and all the cabinet, with a broom.
I want to sweep the Halls of Arrogance, sweep the walls of the excrement of these baboons.
But I respect and prize the covenant -- I respect the process, I respect the rules.
When will we find a chord as resonant as to shake the sheets and make us move?

You've been working too hard to be living, and later
Walking all night, until you're shivering, and is it
Wasting the time that you've been given, to maybe
Wait for the day of oblivion?"

And she said, "Roll out and make your mark. Pull on your boots and march.
Then roll on and meet me where you'll find me doing my own part.
Roll out your dented car. Maybe it won't roll far.
But if you do everything you can, well babe, that's more than a start.

Roll out and make your mark. Pull on your boots and march.
Then roll on and meet me where you'll find me good and ready.
Sometimes it's gonna hurt. Sometimes you're gonna deserve it.
But if you hold on to what you've got, I know you'll keep it steady.

So there's no end to work, so there's no end to the murk.
So everything else is dirt, but I am pure and steady.
So cut out the morbid verse. I know you'll make it work.
And how're you gonna save the world, when the world ain't ready?"

this song is awesome. I do think its about purpose and direction in life, when and how and where to find it and why... something almost everyone struggles with sooner or later, I suppose.

This song is amazing.
I agree with that it's about finding a purpose and direction in life. When you read the lyrics, that obviously makes the most sense.

This is an anti-war song on the somewhat anti-war \"Shake the Sheets\" album.
\"Shake the sheets\" was a derogatory reference to the bombing of Afghanistan, with \"sheets\" in reference to the American perception of traditional Islamic clothing.
I like this line:
\"When will we find a chord as resonant as to shake the sheets and make us move?\"
It\'s shameful that the majority can only mobilize based on racism, manipulation of the media and/or violence. The whole song expresses Leo\'s disdain for the war and the disillusionment and frustration with the way mainstream society reacted to it.

I think there's also a touch of frustration in that line, bocmaxima. When he says "When will we find a chord as resonant as to shake the sheets and make us move?" it feels to me as if he's saying when will people respond to music (and the messages in it) in the same way that they (we) respond to manipulation from the media? You know what I mean?

To me, this song is about overcoming apathy and hopelessness, and realizing that in spite of overwhelming odds, it's important to work to change the world for the better. As an activist, this song gives me hope and reassurance, when I wonder "when will we get an hour to celebrate, find the time to breathe a sigh?"

This is a stretch, but...

The shaking of the sheets reminds me of getting out of bed. It's like that light has finally been turned on, so you can stay inside sleeping in hopeless apathy. You have to get up, you heard that "resonant chord" and you have to go out and do something to change things. I don't think it's meant to be derogatory (I don't think he would, even if it's what the majority of the populace thinks,) I think it's a metaphor.
