Maybe different but remember
Winters warm there you and I
Kissing whiskey by the fire
With the snow outside
And when the summer comes
In the river
Swims at midnight
Shiver cold
Touch the bottom
You and I
With muddy toes

Stay or leave
I want you not to go
But you should
It was good as good goes
Stay or leave
I want you not to go
But you did

Wake up naked drinking coffee
Making plans to change the world
While the world is changing us
It was good, good love
You used to laugh under the covers
Maybe not so often now
But the way I used to laugh with you
Was loud and hard

Stay or leave
I want you not to go
But you should
It was good as good goes
Stay or leave
I want you not to go
But you did

So what to do
With the rest of the day's afternoon hey
Isn't it strange how we change
Everything we did
Did I do all that I should

That I could of done

Remember we used to dance
And everyone wanted to be
You and me
I want to be too
What day is this
Besides the day you left me
What day is this
Besides the day you went

So what to do
With the rest of the day's afternoon hey
Isn't it strange how we change
Everything we did
Did I do all that I could

Remember we used to dance
And everyone wanted to be you and me
I want to be too
What day is this
Besides the day you went babe
What day is this

General Comment:A more reminiscent lost love tale then the average Dave written song; The song uses a day as an allusion to life. The opening line tells that the song is sung in a positive light, i.e., some of the memories, ‘maybe different’, but ‘remember’ the positive times. The singer is aware that the lost love is better off without him, but the pain is still present. ‘Wake up naked…’ represents birth, with the coffee reference as an awaking to the world. ‘The rest of the days afternoon…’ represents midlife, pondering how the singer will continue now that the love is gone. Time becomes insignificant, because every day remains ‘…the day you went away’.

General Comment:my favorite song off somedevil. very much a "is it better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all?" scenario.

"it was good as good goes" i think has a double meaning. 1) what they had was the best of the best. however far a good relationship can go, they went there. 2) he is saying that their time together was good, and the good part of their relationship (her) is going. it's in the moment, as if he is thinking about how good it was as she is walking out the door.

i feel like this is written as a letter to a former girlfriend that remained fairly good friends with him, but he can't seem to get over her. and everyday since their breakup has just been another day she has left, because that's all he can think about "What day is this
Besides the day you left me
    What day is this
    Besides the day you went"

That describes my relationship with my ex I didnt want her to go but i know it was best in the long run, i love the tone difference in the breakdown I think its about remembering all those times you had with a person and wondering why it happened because everythign seemed so perfect and great. You want them to leave but you bc you know its time but also you cant let go. This is my favorite Dave album. I think a lot of some devil is great!

    General Comment:In response to photochick...

"it was good as good goes" refers to pretty much what happens at the end of any long-time relationship. There are good times and bad times, and sometimes the good are really good and the bad are REALLY bad. So... it was good as good goes. It's the natural progression of things.

If you've ever seen The Crow - "it can't rain all the time..." - it's the same basic premise. Things can't be perfect all the time. Especially if you've been with someone for a long time. But the good times were as good as they could get - in the end, the negative just outweighed it.

General Comment:I was in a 4 year relationship with a married woman whom I knew was married, we became involved with no expectations of what the future would hold for us. We heard this song about after being together for 2 years, and it really didn't hit close to home, it was a direct surgical strike. It described our relationship to a T.
We had fallen deeply in love with eachother, we had the midnight swims in a local river during the summers, snuggled up keeping warm together in the winter, my family and friends were always saying what a perfect happy couple we were, but what they never did see, was the bitter sweet part of her having to leave Sunday afternoons after spending all weekend with me, or her having to get home in the late afternoon after a weekday visit.
After 4 years I finally had to walk away, she was not leaving her husband, I never asked her to because we went in that way, and that was not an option in the beginning. So regret? " Did I do all that I could? Did I do all that I should?"
This song hits so many points of emotion for the both of us even today after being apart for 3 years. We still talk on occasion, and lie to eachother about "moving on". I'm still single, she's still unhappily married. So yes, "it was as good as good goes" for us. It was the best times of our lives, but in hind sight, it could have been so much more for alot longer if things were right.
The world has changed us, we are different people now thats for sure, but something will never change, we will have always have our memories."Maybe different, but remember"

General Comment:i agree that this song is about a breakup, but for me it will always remind me of leaving barcelona. i discovered this song my last few days in bcn after spending an amazing summer there in an apartment with 5 awesome roommates. the song just completely captivated me, and i listened to it on repeat as i packed my bags, said my goodbyes, and for most of my long flight back to the states. it just seemed so fitting at the time, not wanting to leave something so perfect with someone so perfect, but knowing you have to move on. i especially love the lines "remember we used to dance/and everyone wanted to be/ you and me", it just reminds me of going out and dancing and having the best time with my friends. such a beautiful song.
