i saw john mayer play this song live when he first wrote it and i've been looking for it ever since. this song is so great. why have a 10.5 when you already have an 8? <3

i live the lines, "it's not the perfect hand, but i don't hit on nineteen". it alludes to poker and miniature golf. although she is not perfect (nobody is), he doesn't want to try to "hit on nineteen" (as in the 19th hole to try to win a free game), or figuratively speaking, he doesn't need to start over with a new girl. he's good where he is. awesome song...


by the way, isn't this songmeanings.com? most of the comments i see is trivial things such as "this song rawks!", "i totally can relate!", or "this is my most favoritist band ever. they're awesommme!"

i always thought that 'its not the perfect hand, but i dont it on 19' was referring to blackjack. like 19 isnt a perfect hand but you wouldnt want to hit on it and lose completely. this song is so seriously deep and really john at his best.

brynski15, that makes more sense actually. thanks for that. i was wondering why he was making two different comparisons in one sentence. i still think the one i came up with is cool, but yours is more logical and probably what john was going for.

green is the color of jealousy and envy

so i think it means he won't be affected by something that makes him jealous, he won't lose his feelings for this girl, he's perfectly confident with this girl, and perfectly confident that his feelings for her are true and real

I think by green, he's referring to the proverb "The grass is greener on the other side." People aren't always happy where they are because they believe that there's something better out there for them, and they just need to find it.

However, he doesn't need another kind of green (he doesn't need to go out and find other women and experience other relationships) because he's happy exactly where he is now, which is with the person he is currently with.

Basically, the message of the song is - "I'm happy here with you, and I know there's no one who could possibly be better for me so I'm staying right here."

Great song. I especially love the bridge.

that transistions from his feelings to the girls. I feel you all are right about him not leaving, however these lines are saying when the time comes and the girl believes she can do better she'll realize that she gave up what made her happy.

I think that he is reffering to the colour of eyes. She doesn't need "another kind of green" for her to realize that she and him are good together... just a thought.

I think he's just saying that he doesn't need jealousy or to be jealous of what someone else has to know that what he's got with this girl is good. i think the lines you posted, mmv, mean that if the girl moves on and goes out with someone else, she'll see that she belonged with the character described in the song because what they had together was perfect.

this line is referin to black jack (the card game) Johns sayin that his girl isnt a perfect hand (a 21 in black jack) but hes not gonna go look for something else and lose what he has. get it?

I feel that this song is about two people in a relationship and one person dosent understand that they have a it good and someone else is trying to explain that they dont need to see other people he/she is the right person for them.

i'm pretty sure he's refering to blackjack when he says "your not the perfect hand But I dont hit on nineteen" meaning the person he's refering to isn't perfect but pretty close, so why risk loosing it all just to get to perfect. and another kind of green doesn't refer to jelousy, it refers to the grass is greener on the other side. if you'll notice, he says " i don't need another kind of green to know i'm on the right side with you" meaning he doesn't need to see what else is better to know he's got something good.

and the lyrics are wrong up there by the way.

I always figured it was about our ever-supportive green friend. An environmental song wrapped like a love song: 'You don't need to lose it, to know that you had it good'.(Perhaps the wording 'Kind of Green' could also refer to 'Kind of Blue' by Miles Davis?)
