its definitely about how we surrender our lives to God. Jesus says in John 15:19 "If you belonged to the world it would love you as its own, as it is, you do not belong to the world, but i have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you." He is speaking about the disciples and how if they chose to go out and live like Christians the world will hate them.

i think its like he feels like hes only praying for stuff he needs or if hes in trouble without actually believing in god because hes too afraid of what other people think;;i went through that when i transferred to a public school after 6 safe years at a private school.
