your bitter goodbye is
ringing through this quiet night
this idle hour just wont pass
ive never missed you this much
never thought i would
didnt think youd feel so far away

your summer perfume is still
blowing through this hallway
autumns amber red shadows dance
i miss our midnight rides
on highway 18...
18 is gone

so go past the lights
and all the excuses
you could have left "sincerely yours"
dont you think its obvious
that i want to say more?
cause anything too daring to say to you
will be said in this letter
then burned away
so you never realize im here

im thinking of your vague reply
so i can understand
why we put this at rest
why we forget to
say that we were leaving
say that we were sorry
the past remains unspoken
as this vacant night is dying

but i still miss your summer perfume
this cold air brings such a distance to us
such a painful distance
and im still waiting for you to say
you hate me now
so i dont have to
hold on to this burning heart
this burning heart is getting old
getting old...

and while sitting on this cold kitchen floor
head down to hide the tears
ive realized
ive finally realized
that you were never meant for me

General Comment:I didn't really read anyone else's responses to this song because I'm kindof eager to say something, butttt...

I totally think this song is about a couple forced to break up because of college. like, when he says "i still miss your summer perfume/ this cold air brings such a distance to us/ such a painful distance" he's talking about their last summer together, and how he can still smell her scent in the heat, and the cold air rips it all apart.

and "i miss our midnight rides on highway 18.../ 18 is gone" is talking about their late night drives on, of course, highway 18, and 18 is gone because they're forced to grow up and away from each other.

"so i can understand why we put this at rest why we forget to say that we were leaving say that we were sorry" is how the guy is just left dumbfounded at the fact that she broke up with him because he thought they were perfect.

and the end is his painful realization of that they weren't perfect, they're still young, and she left him to live her life.

idunno, that's just what i get outof it, but recetnly i've been getting htat out of a lot of songs ahhaha

General Comment:this song is so beautiful. i almost think that its referring to a guy who loves a girl so much..but for some reason or another, he could never have her. hes analyzed her as much as possible, and tried to get close to her. i also think she leads him on quite a bit, and makes him think that they're more then they really are.

by 'midnight rides' he means the subtle times they've spent together that mean so much to him but barely nothing to her. and he really needs to put his heart to rest because its hurting him like no other. the last line - 'ive finally realized you were never meant for me' just is the fact that hes getting over her, even though he doesnt want to.

that could be totally wrong but its how i take it =D

General Comment:The line about the summer perfume leads me to believe it was a summer romance, it's autumn now and she's gone.

Pretty much the girl left him, and gave him a vague reason why, and through the song he's kind of heartbroken, because he really didn't say all he wanted to. Then at the end, he just accepts it, they weren't meant to be, so he should stop pretending.

    My twisted view lol.

General Comment:this song touches me like no other -- I dated someone who lived an hour and a half away, all I can recall now is just how much I miss him and all the things I could not say...

This is the first derby song I fell in love with
I saw them in Alliston MA
and .........................MET THEM OUTSIDE In Boston just the other month...(It took me three hours to drive up there from Rhode Island, I had to pay 30$ for parking because of Fenway Stadium because there was a baseball game but I wanted so bad the CD ; I spoke to some promo ppl, even tried to go in during their set BUT I couldn't! I offered to pay more than what was said. I JUST WANTED THE ACOUSTIC CD ONLY AVAILABLE AT THE CONCERT!!!! As luck would have it Kenny Choi came out and I called his name and told him about my adventure then he jumped inside the club and got us a cd free of charge)

It was a horrible night but worth it...

General Comment:kinda sounds like a summer romance. they have their fun, guy falls for girl but she has to leave when summer ends. neither expected a meaningful relationship so her departure is a bitter one. in the end he realizes that it wouldn't have worked.

i left a great guy at home when i left for college. this song hits home.
