You can compliment me on the style of my hair
Give me marks out of ten for the clothes that I wear
You probably thought I had more upstairs
I disappoint you
I can see through
Your perfect smile

He likes to read books written for girls
He prides himself on being a man of the world
In the darkest of places he gets his thrills
He will disappoint you
If see through
His perfect smile

Now I think separation is okay
You're no star to guide me anyway
You only wanted me to play
A fool
Play by your rules

Now my door has swollen from the rain
God knows we'll never see her face again
People get shattered in many ways
They can disappoint you
If you through
Their perfect smiles

Now I think separation is okay
'Cause you're no star to guide me anyway
You only wanted to me to play
A fool
Play by your rules

A fool
Play by your rules

General Comment:I've never figured out if she's telling him to play by his rules or if he wants her to play by his rules. Works either way.

General Comment:"you probably thought i'd had more upstairs"

by upstairs, i thought it either meant breast, brains, or maybe both because the way the 2 lines before it makes it sounds like it's still about looks and therefore breasts, while the song title "books" makes me think brains

General Comment:Dearjulianna got it right. Its pretty sarcastic about boys who are all into the right books and music and ideas, but then just turn out to be the same as everyone else.

Even though it sounds totally sad, I dont see it as tracyanne moping around after a break-up or anything, its pretty scathing in parts.

General Comment:I love the lines "You probably thought I had more upstairs/I disappoint you." For some reason Traceyanne's really restrained singing style make those lyrics sound really badass. Like, the guy judges her as stupid or shallow but she's aware of that, and she talks about it so calmly that she comes out sounding like the winner.
So I guess it's that the guy thinks he's really sensitive and understands women, but he actually is sexist even though he thinks of himself as being so feminist. The lines I mention above make me think of when guys criticize a girl's intelligence or talent or something, and they're judging her more harshly than they would judge a guy but they pretend it has nothing to do with gender. So it makes me think Traceyanne didn't do what the guy wanted her to do, and his response was to tell her that she wasn't smart/intellectual enough.

General Comment:It's about anal-sex of course.

you probably thought i'd had more upstairs: more experience.

he prides himself on being a man of the world:he's a macho dude.

in the darkest of places he gets his thrill:well..you figure it out.

i disappoint you: she wont do it.

you're no star to guide me anyway
you only wanted me to play: he only wanted her for sex.

now my door has swollen from the rain:a guy how likes anal sex is called a "backdoor man"..the rain is just a nice touch.
