Lyrics for A Man and a Woman as interpreted by Lyra

A Man and a Woman Lyrics
Little sister don’t you worry about a thing today
Take the heat from the sun
Little sister
I know that everything is not ok
But you’re like honey on my tongue

True love never can be rent
But only true love can keep beauty innocent

I could never take a chance
Of losing love to find romance
In the mysterious distance
Between a man and a woman
No I could never take a chance
‘Cos I could never understand
The mysterious distance
Between a man and a woman

You can run from love
And if it’s really love it will find you
Catch you by the heel
But you can’t be numb for love
The only pain is to feel nothing at all
How can I hurt when I’m holding you?

I could never take a chance
Of losing love to find romance
In the mysterious distance
Between a man and a woman

And you’re the one, there’s no-one else
You make me want to lose myself
In the mysterious distance
Between a man and a woman

Brown eyed girl across the street
On rue Saint Divine
I thought this is the one for me
But she was already mine
You were already mine…

Little sister
I’ve been sleeping in the street again
Like a stray dog
Little sister
I’ve been trying to feel complete again
But you’re gone and so is God

The soul needs beauty for a soul mate
When the soul wants… the soul waits …

No I could never take a chance
Of losing love to find romance
In the mysterious distance
Between a man and a woman

For love and faith and sex and fear
And all the things that keep us here
In the mysterious distance
Between a man and a woman

How can I hurt when I’m holding you?

the first line of the last stanza is actually "For love and faith and sex and fear"

Well, since I have "strong feelings" for my wife's sister-- and I know that I'll never be able to do anything about it-- this song takes on a special meaning for me.

Hey Bill...Check out this line...."You can run from love, but if it's really love it will find you". Never say never!

I think this song is about someone who is deeply in love with another person but can't say or show how they feel because he/she doesn't want to ruin the friendship. It's a song about love and fear .. as Bobo says "For love and faith and sex and fear". It sounds like that person just doesn;t wan't to take a chance and losing the love of his/her life by exposing how they really feel for the other person.

I like this song, it's catchy too. I agree with you glamour girl. Hey Billl do you love both your wife and her sister or her sister more? if you love your wife more then u shuld stay with her, if her sister, well I dunno go with your gut, make a move if you know the relationship with your wife is a lie. Anyway, keep on keepin on U2!

I think this song is about a man who is reaffirming love after facing temptation. When he says "I could never take a chance of loving love" (a relationship), "to find romance" (a flirtation).

I re-read my comment (which I now regret) at least 4 times. There are 32 words, none of which is the word "love". I appreciate the comments, but do not misunderstand me. I simply have "feelings" that I will never express. I acknowlege that those "feelings" would probably turn into something more- under the right circumstances- but an extrordinarily unlikely set of events would have to unfold- and I just don't think it'll ever happen. It's a shame that "what could have been" has the power to haunt me. It's an even bigger shame that I brought that to this place.

You only think it haunts you bill, because you're allowing it to.

Anyway that wasn't what I came to say. I don't understand why MORE people haven't remarked on how uterly beautiful this song is. I'm not a big fan of U2 but my brother is (you might find him floating around here somewhere) and he has almost all the albums so I do listen to them but normally only the mainstream songs or typically popular ones (ie One, Beautiful Day) but this song just LEAPED off the latest album. It's utterly beautiful.

I especially love the lyrics "But you can’t be numb for love
The only pain is to feel nothing at all"

The more I listen to it the more I think it's a love song to his wife Ali. Bono writes,
"Brown eyed girl across the street
On rue Saint Divine
I thought this is the one for me
But she was already mine
You were already mine..."
seems to suggest that though he sees her as a separate being they're one at the same time. Maybe this dichotomy is the 'mysterious distance between a man and a woman' in a deeply commited relationship? I feel a similar thing as a married man with my treasured wife of 20 years - we're one and yet different/separate people (all a bit mysterious).
This 'mysterious distance' may also suggest something infinately precious, something not to be found in mere 'romance', but only in long-term commited love.
"I could never take a chance
Of losing love to find romance "
I'm very moved by it and wonder at the gift of being able to convey the sense of something that's hard to pin down through a song.

The line "The soul needs beauty for a soul mate" was actually first used in "Always," which eventually evolved into "Beautiful Day."

I also love this song, it's my favourite on the current U2-album. what I still don't understand (though I've been thinking about it for a long time) is the line
"I thought this is the one for me
But she was already mine
You were already mine..." .
Maybe it could be a hint for the destiny, that means that he is wondering whether 'this is the one for him', but in fact it is already "written in the stars" that these two people belong together...

"I thought this is the one for me"
"but she was already mine" because she is a friend, not a lover.. so, "she is already mine"

When I first heard that lyric, I thought it was Bono seeing a beautiful woman across the street (Rue. St. Divine), getting turned on, then realizing it was his wife.

Bono makes a lot of references to his wife's brown eyes (like in 'Sweetest Thing' - "Blue eyed boys meets brown-eyed girl.." ) and does so again in this song. In this case, a sort of, "Whoah, look at her, she's hot .. damn, that's Ali. She's already mine."

The song is about not risking something as solid as your marriage to the woman you love for a quicker fling with another woman - and in this case he's realizing that he already has that ideal woman.

thanks a lot! yeah, it really makes sense. in a metaphorical way: he is looking for the one true love, sees her ("does not know her") and realizes that she is the right person. in that way, a very intelligent text: the already-wife and all other women get equal chances (because he does not know her/stands on the other side of the street) and he chooses HER to be the right one. wow!

does anyone know what he says/whispers right before the last line \"How can I hurt when I’m holding you?\" is it my ears or does it sound like a woman\'s name?

I think basically most people here are right its about bono not wanting to throw away his relationship with his wife coz another woman caught his eye, hes must eb tempted all the time at gigs and so on and still he chooses his wife...so amazing.I think every1 can understand and relate, such a fantastic song yet another good one by U2

This song makes me think of my sister. she moved to USA and I hardly see her anymore. I miss her. I know her relationship with her husbond isn't going so well, so the lines:

"Little sister don’t you worry about a thing today
Take the heat from the sun
Little sister
I know that everything is not ok
But you’re like honey on my tongue"

and

"You can run from love
And if it’s really love it will find you"

Really hit me in my heart.

Another BEAUTIFUL song by Bono and the rest of U2.

This has to be my favourite song from HTDAAB. I can remember reading a quote from Bono about how his relationship with his wife has held together because of the fact that he has never completely understood her. There's always more you can find out about somebody, no matter how well you think you know them. At first I thought that this song was tied in with that, but on closer inspection it actually seems to be saying the opposite: that mystery can only be found with a new partner. But then there's 'And you’re the one, there’s no-one else / You make me want to lose myself'. Maybe its about loving the same person on two different levels. I don't think I'm making sense anymore... any help please?

Fantastic song! (even if I can't make my mind up about what it means)
