I walk a lonely road
The only one that I have ever known
Don't know where it goes
But it's only me, and I walk alone
I walk this empty street
On the boulevard of broken dreams
Where the city sleeps
And I'm the only one, and I walk alone
I walk alone, I walk alone
I walk alone and I walk a
[Chorus]
My shadow's the only one that walks beside me
My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me
Till then I walk alone
Ah ah ah ah ah
Ah ah ah ah ah
I'm walking down the line
That divides me somewhere in my mind
On the border line of the edge
And where I walk alone
Read between the lines
What's fucked up and every thing's all right
Check my vital signs to know I'm still alive
And I walk alone
I walk alone, I walk alone
I walk alone and I walk a
[Chorus]
Ah ah ah ah ah
Ah ah ah ah ah
I walk alone, I walk a
I walk this empty street
On the boulevard of broken dreams
Where the city sleeps
And I'm the only one, and I walk a
[Chorus]
The only one that I have ever known
Don't know where it goes
But it's only me, and I walk alone
I walk this empty street
On the boulevard of broken dreams
Where the city sleeps
And I'm the only one, and I walk alone
I walk alone, I walk alone
I walk alone and I walk a
[Chorus]
My shadow's the only one that walks beside me
My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me
Till then I walk alone
Ah ah ah ah ah
Ah ah ah ah ah
I'm walking down the line
That divides me somewhere in my mind
On the border line of the edge
And where I walk alone
Read between the lines
What's fucked up and every thing's all right
Check my vital signs to know I'm still alive
And I walk alone
I walk alone, I walk alone
I walk alone and I walk a
[Chorus]
Ah ah ah ah ah
Ah ah ah ah ah
I walk alone, I walk a
I walk this empty street
On the boulevard of broken dreams
Where the city sleeps
And I'm the only one, and I walk a
[Chorus]

When I tell my best friend "I walk alone" she tries to hug me and says, "sorry, but I walk with you." She doesn't though, because not even she understands how I feel in my head. The words, "I wak a lonely road, the only one that I have ever known, don"t know where it goes, but its home to me and I walk alone." I think perfectly define how I feel, my mental image is of me, walking down a deserted road, towards the mountains where there is no sun and no other life. Becuase only I walk down my road.
Extremely powerful song and very relatable.
"On the borderline of the edge and where I walk alone."
I originally mis-heard this as:
"On the borderline of the engine where I walk alone."
I think my version makes a lot of sense. The "engine" is the city; he's walking along the borders of the city. The analogy makes sense if you think about it; a city is a complex, intricate place that's always active, bustling, moving quickly, getting things done.
This makes even more sense if you consider it in the context of the story of American Idiot, the Broadway musical. Johnny left the suburbs to come to the city. He's used to suburban life, so the city is a confusing engine to him.
The music is just pure bloody brilliant.
I can relate to the lyrics...often I've found it so hard with people, that I've just decided to "walk alone", and hope that someday "someone finds me". :/ It does get lonely. When I got stabbed in the back by someone who I thought actually cared about me (as a close friend), I felt so awful. This song...I don't know. Damn, it just has so much meaning.
The singer doesn't necessarily like this; life has become somewhat meaningless ("check my vital signs to know I'm still alive"), but at the same time, he'll continue along that path because he hasn't been convinced that there's anything else out there for him. Without a higher power to guide him, he'll continue to make his own path through life, and focus on all that he knows to be real ("my shallow hearts the only thing that's beating" referring to his own moral guide).
Anyway, that's what I got out of it.
