Okay guys, get ready to hear something really stupid. This might sound dumb, but this song makes me think of vampires..
When he says "it would be fine if i died by your side," and then "if you could spare one of your nine lives," it makes me think that he means it would be fine, because he could still be with her.
"and if i froze here in the sand, my hand cold in your hand" (vampires are cold) "I`d melt in your honour, (makes me think of being burned, as in how they used to execute people thought to be paranormal) I`d be happily slaughtered"
And then "morning`s come to claim me," as in how vampires die with the sunlight. But he says to "mind this heart now, angel, night's not over yet," asking her to know he still loves her, or possibly asking her not to take him to the afterlife yet ("angel"), he`s still alive.
I wrote this as I listened to it for the first time, so I apologize if my view is completely different from yours =) It`s just what it makes me think of.

Haha, I love this song.
To me it means that Max fell in love with a cat and he's always chasing it through the night ("night's not over yet") because cat's sleep through the day and are usually active at night.

rofl it's probably not even close but i dont care cause that's what it's like to me

i think you're all right.
maybe he is referring to the sport and the album.
this makes no sense when i type it.
but it makes so much sense in my head.haha.

i think its titled baseball but better because in the lyrics he says "its my favorite pastime chasing after you"; and baseball is our nations pastime, so instead of baseball being his pastime chasing after her is.
thus, baseball but better


oh and one of my favorite say anything songs by the way

ever since i was 14 years old i feel like my favorite pastime in live is chasing after girls.
look at what every kid talks about at the lunch table, what men talk about at the water cooler, what you think about when you fall asleep at night...it's your favorite pastime, chasing after a girl.

i think its referring to like, baseball as in, like "dude, did you get to second base?" you know, like most say anything lyrics, it has sexual meaning, and its better because he loves her too

Well, this line could reference the pastime of baseball;
''the most magnificent pastime
chasing after you''

So, saying that chasing after her is BASEBALL, BUT BETTER. Because baseball is a pastime.

why is it so crazy that he'd write about sports? a whole album named baseball?
song named baseball but better, and another named save situation
reference to someone playing on varsity in a song

why do you assume he wouldnt talk about sports?

Toast, I always thought of it as a slight to his earlier album, which was entitled "Baseball." Apparently, that album was all about one girl, and I always took it as kind of like...this song is about the same girl, but that this one song is better than all of Baseball.

shoolaces, that's hilarious. the nine lives part makes me think of a cat whenever i hear this song too. max makes a lot of references to cats in his music, i wonder why....
