While this town is busy sleeping,
All the noise has died away.
I walk the streets to stop my weeping,
'Cause she'll never change her ways.

Don't fool yourself,
She was heartache from the moment that you met her.
My heart feels so still
As I try to find the will to forget her, somehow.
Oh I think I've forgotten her now.

Her love is a rose, pale and dying.
Dropping her petals in land unknown
All full of wine, the world before her,
Was sober with no place to go.

Don't fool yourself,
She was heartache from the moment that you met her.
My heart is frozen still
As I try to find the will to forget her, somehow.
She's somewhere out there now.

Well my tears falling down as I try to forget,
Her love was a joke from the day that we met.
All of the words, all of her men,
All of my pain when I think back to when.

Remember her hair as it shone in the sun,
The smell of the bed when I knew what she'd done.
Tell yourself over and over
You won't ever need her again.

But don't fool yourself,
She was heartache from the moment that you met her.
My heart is frozen still
As I try to find the will to forget her, somehow.
She's out there somewhere now.

Oh she was heartache from the day that I first met her.
My heart is frozen still
As I try to find the will to forget you, somehow.
'Cause I know you're somewhere out there right now.

General Comment:This is the best song about realizing that this special person you love so much isn't doing any good in your life. OK, it's good to forgive but as long as the girl or boy adds something good in your life. I think the girl Jeff's talking about in the song broke his heart- I mean, who wouldn't after this person cheated on you- It's that strange moment when you are still loving that person but can not expose once more to her destructive ways. For your own good, walk away. Stop loving her or him, slowly. There's no other way. Oh, Jeff, you were so right. This song touches me deeply. You have no idea how much it helped me. Thank you, beautiful. Everybody here (still) wants you...

General Comment:The man is walking aimlessly through town as he cries but he doesnt cry over the end of his relationship, He cries over the fact that this woman will never change and will end up doing this to another man just like him.

He talks about their love, About how it starts off beautifully and then it slowly but surely fades away and begins to die. He talks about how she is "full of wine" (Immature, like how you are while you are drunk) and that the world around her is sober (Mature) and that her immaturity no longer has a place in the world - He is begging her to grow up

He thinks back about his relationship and relizes that she never loved him and she only viewed him as a toy - Something that she played with until she got bored and found something new. He remembers the pain of finding out that it is all a lie, that her love was a joke, and that the smell of the bed gave away what she had done (cheated on him).

He continues walking and tells himself that he wont ever need her again, that he wont ever see her again. Yet he knows that its a lie and even in his best efforts to forget about her, He knows that she is still out there some where.

My Interpretation:Her love is a rose, pale and dying
Dropping her petals IN LAND UNKNOWN

    not 'man I know'.

Almost every source I've found says something like 'pain I know' or 'man I know', but if you listen carefully, 'in land unknown' is what he's really saying.

General Comment:Jeff didn't want this song to be released as part of Grace album because it was too personal...some say he wrote this after he and Rebecca Moore broke up. Maybe Jeff realised that he still loved her and the song might hurt Moore. Seriously though, this song is full of angst and sadness...and yet very beautiful.

General Comment:i think the song could be about a prostitute that someone has fallen for. in general it is about a break up but it could have be inspired by a pretty woman-ish scenario

General Comment:all of his songs are incredible..but this song seems to really hit home emotionally. the desperation, the anger, that sadness he sings it with forces the listener to understand..thats a rare gift in a musician.

i guess it pretty much speaks for itself. its about trying and know you have to get over someone, being angry about what they did to, and yet still...

'As I try to find the will to forget her somehow
Oh I think I've forgotten her now'

General Comment:it's just so easy to relate to this song you know. no matter what the scale.

it was weird, when i first heard this song, i was having trouble deciding between two girls. one that loved me with everything, and then the one that had been so wrong for me before that i can just never get over. i swear i wouldn't keep this on repeat because i felt like jeff buckley was just here to narate my life. i think that's what hooks people to him, he's so good and getting his message deep into feeling, he knows what people go through and he knows the perfect way to put it.
