whenever i hear this song the liquid sounding background reminds me of beer guzzling/urination/parties aka all the drinking one does in college. some drunk college kid going uh. . ., ah. . ., then -- you don't have to go to college. i'd say the song is a mix of disco inferno's "sharky waters" and beach boys vocals with an extra special twist.

Sometimes I think, since there's an underlying theme of leaving throughout Sung Tongs, "you don't have to go to college" means, "you don't have to leave me."

You can look at the album for a meaning but how do you explain the weird background? Seems like the sound bugs make when the crawl around.

Bugs? What about bugs in an attic or basement, packing up an old house?

That is beautiful. I hope you're right.

To me, it means everything is going to be alright. Parents/guardians pressure one to go to college but "you don't have to go to college." This song makes me feel good when I'm down. Oh and it sounds like someone is taking a piss in the beginning.

I'd be saying this too if I made a critically acclaimed experimental music album.

i agree with rudexgirl. the song in my mind is about the constant pressure from parents to make their kid go to college. and when parents finally give the son/daughter the choice that they dont have to. a song that describes a snippet of my life. comforting.

society now treats education as the only way to succeed-going to college...after that the pressure is on for you job to profit you and make a living.YOU CAN STILL LIVE HAPPY/WELL WITHOUT BANKRUPTING YOURSELF FOR MORE SCHOOLING.

i love this song, it's just so random and makes me laugh. such a build up, and then a simple, "you don't have to go to college." the whole song kind of has a humorous sound for me, i can't explain it, but i chuckle every time.

Avey Tare has said on numerous occasions that he really didn't enjoy college while he was going to it. While I agree that "you don't have to go to college" could be a beautiful way of saying "you don't have to leave me", I also think there's another theme on the album, which is generally that of finding happiness outside of societal norms (like "Who Could Win a Rabbit").
Perhaps it has duel meanings: You don't have to leave me, because you're happy here, not at a place you're going to out of obligation to look "successful".
How can you not love a band who evokes 19 responses to a song with a single line of lyric? :)

I think you guys are digging in too deep. I think they're simply poking fun at how much pressure is put on teenagers trying to get into the best college possible, but you don't even have to go to college, it helps but it isn't necessary in leading a happy (not necessarily successful) life.

this one is about a man, a tree, and a bear that have a passionate and complicated love triangle. there is much confrontation that ends in the death of the tree and a falling out between the man and the bear. the bear becomes a vicious wild beast with a vendetta for men in orange clothing and the man a taxidermist.
