Justin wrote a book called Crazy Making and in it he published his lyrics. On each page he has handwritten notes about what he was thinking when he wrote his songs. Many times they can be as cryptic as the songs themselves...but for Come in Closer he wrote: "Inspired by the Voicemail. I tried to use words of color and anything "Lonely" as a starting point" and then at the bottom of the song lyrics it states:
Friends Voice Mail:
"He cheated on me with some other woman. It's been a really bad couple of weeks. He cheated on me with some other woman."
So as I read down through all of the interpretations I was really touched by how much Justin's music moves people with his symology and his imagery and the bands music. I too will just put on ONE of Blue's songs like this one and play it over and over for an hour just to FEEL it...their songs are so open for interpretation...

My interpretation is different than most....
I feel like this is yes, him talking about cheating on his girl, but I think the lyrics are leaning more towards him wanting to come closer to the one he is cheating with. He wants her to come in closer, she makes everything else go away, takes away the storms.
Aside from all he feels he is doing wrong, she still makes things feel right.... so he wants her to come in closer
A lot of his songs relate to what sounds like wanting someone he cant have, deeply loving someone that is either taken or has chosen not to be with him. I dont think this is his wife, I think it's a friend whom he really loves but cant have, but possibly cheated with.
Listen to My Never ... "I had a dream that you were with me", "I saw forever in my never", "I could try to be with you but somehow I'll end up just losing my friend" "I wanna live inside your heaven"
What if we could.... "what if we could put our lives on hold and meet somewhere inside of the world....Im glad to say that we met, but im sad to say that the circumstances wern't on our side, so go on be your own star, your a super star in my eyes.... I would meet you, would you meet me"

Since im bipolar also, i can relate some verses to myself and the way my bipolar mind thinks.

This reffers to his brother who is older than him, i believe.
Some of the Verses relate to how his brother is drifting away,
and when he says "come in closer"
Justin is saying he doesnt want his bipolar brother to get lost in his own mind.
Which is "the Storm"
However this is only my opinion because the song can be interperetted in many ways.
Its a truely magnificant song. As are all of the blue october songs.

The first Love always seems like True Love.

Just like a movie, when he saw her, the fog cleared and he could see clearly.

She seemed to make all evil (serpents always mean evil, always :P ) disappear from his life.

But things take a turn for the worst...

Just as clowns put on makeup for show, but it means nothing about how they are inside, we (or perhaps just Him and Her from the song) pretend to be happy even though they aren't.

The night is falling on their relationship, and it makes him uncomfortable and scared.
"And how the wind she blows
How the wind she blows"
The winds of change, perhaps? Not sure about this one...

Obvious. He wants to hold on to her as long as he can, so he asks her to come in closer to him.

They'll continue their "dance", pretending they're a happy couple...

But they never admit that it's just a "dance" and no longer a reality.

For the fear of our pain"
They continue this dance because they're afraid of the pain they'll cause and feel if the relationship dies.
"Our souls become useless
As the day they were born"
I think, but am nowhere near sure, that I know what this means. I think it's that their entire lives' worth of learning and growing (their "souls") mean nothing anymore ("become useless" like before they had learned anything, the day they were born) because it can't help now. Again, nowhere near certain of this.

Away from your storm"
A rocking chair is supposed to be calming and relaxing, but it's all rusted now, referring to the once-happy relationship that's now "rusted", or decaying, as he tries to avoid her anger.

The truth (probably that he cheated) is extremely dangerous for him.

His actions are much more important than his words, unlike the common "lie" "The truth shall set you free", etc.

The roses that once signified their love are now strewn across the floor after a fight, so now they're a "sour patch" signifying the end of their relationship.

Away from your storm"
Again, the rusted-arm rocking chair is the decaying relationship, and "away from your storm" means he's trying to avoid her anger.

Blue October is amazing, this is one of my favorite songs.
In the song Say It, he uses the lyrics "A Considerate Clown..a preachy preachy machine...Is one of the sweetest things you would say about me" as well as the clowns he sings about in Somebody..
But I full heartedly agree with Jerileigh43's interpretation of this song. I think that they have done the best in coming up with the meaning of this song.
"Come dancing with devils..." "So here we are now, face to face" The test in Somebody, while in Come in Closer he's saying the truth is lethal, just a lie. Before he wouldn't cheat (on test but still, what exactly /is/ the test?") and in this song he's, or was, cheating.
I mean honestly I could connect all the songs on this album into a story about just one relationship, but the clown makeup image was very striking to me.
Maybe I'm way off track... :/
