I've hardly been outside my room in days
'Cause I don't feel that I deserve the sunshine rays
The Darkness helped until the whiskey wore away
And it was then I realized the conscience that never fades

When you're young you have this image of your life
That you'd be scrupulous and one day even make a wife
And you make boundaries you'd never dream to cross
And if you happen to you wake completely lost

But I will fight for you
Be sure that I will fight
Until we're the special two
Once Again

[Chorus]
And we will only need each other
We'll bleed together
Our hands will not be taught to hold another's
'Cause we're the special two
And we can only see each other
We'll breathe together
These arms will not be taught to need another's
'Cause we're the special two

I remember someone old once said to me
That lies will lock you up with truth the only key
But I was comfortable and warm inside my shell
And couldn't see this place could soon become my hell

So is it better to tell and hurt
Or lie to save their face
Well I guess the answer is
Don't do it in the first place

I know I'm not deserving of your trust from you right now
But if by chance you change your mind
You know I will not let you down
'cause we were the special two and we'll be again

[Chorus]

I step outside my minds eyes for a minute
And I look over me like a doctor looking for disease or someone that could ease the pain
But nothing cures the hurt you, you bring on by yourself
Just remembering, just remembering how we were

[Chorus]

My Interpretation:This one is such a beautiful song. I've known it for ages, but I never really listened to the lyrics properly before now.

As a whole, I think it's about a girl who's singing about and to her sister, with whom she has a broken relationship.

My take on it, stanza by stanza, is this:

    --

I've hardly been outside my room in days,
'cause I don't feel that I deserve the sunshine's rays.
The darkness helped until the whiskey wore away,
And it was then I realized the conscience never fades.

When you're young you have this image of your life:
That you'll be scrupulous and one day even make a wife.
And you make boundaries you'd never dream to cross,
And if you happen to you wake completely lost.

    --

This part to me is bout being young and imagining a really fantastic, bright, carefree life, making 'boundaries'. Then, when you get older, you overstep those boundaries, and you feel really guilty and unsure of who you are.

    --

But I will fight for you, be sure that
I will fight until we're the special two once again.

    --

She's saying to her loved one, perhaps a sister, that no matter what happens, she will try to mend their broken relationship, so that they can have the relationship that they did when they were younger, when they were 'the special two'.

    --

And we will only need each other, we'll breathe together,
Our hands will not be taught to hold another's,
    When we're the special two.
And we could only see each other, we'll bleed together,
These arms will not be taught to need another,
'Cause we were the special two.

    --

She's saying here that their relationship as 'the special two' can withstand anything, that they don't need anyone else if they have each other, that they will stand by each other no matter what, like they used to.

    --

I remember someone old once said to me:
"That lies will lock you up with truth the only key."
But I was comfortable and warm inside my shell,
And couldn't see this place would soon become my hell.
So is it better to tell and hurt or lie to save their face?
Well I guess the answer is don't do it in the first place.

    --

Here I believe she's saying that she did something to the other half of 'the special two', but couldn't decide whether to tell her or not, because she felt so guilty about it. She reminisces about receiving advice that lies would 'lock her up' with 'truth the only key'.

She is confused about whether she should tell the other person and hurt her, or lie to her and keep her from hurting.

She answers her own question, saying that 'the answer is don't do it in the first place', again suggesting regret for what she did.

    --

I know I'm not deserving of your trust from you right now,
But if by chance you change your mind you know I will not let you down
'cause we were the special two, and we'll be again.

    --

She's asking her loved one for forgiveness, to put it simply. She knows that her loved one doesn't trust her any more, and wants to atone for her mistakes. She wants to go back to being 'the special two'., and is adamant that she will make things right, so they can 'be again'.

    --

And we will only need each other, we'll breathe together,
Our hands will not be taught to hold another's,
    When we're the special two.
And we can only see each other we'll bleed together,
These arms will not be taught to need another...
    'cause we're the special two.

    --

Again, she says that they will need no-one else, because if they have each other, they are inseparable and unbreakable.

    --

I step outside my mind's eyes for a minute.
And I look over me like a doctor looking for disease,
Or something that could ease the pain.
But nothing cures the hurt you, you bring on by yourself,
Just remembering, just remembering how we were...

    --

She tries to analyse what she can do to find a 'cure' for the pain she feels over what happened to her relationship, trying to see it from different eyes - she believes that this may make her problem easier to solve.

She comes to the conclusion that there is no cure for the hurt she feels at her loved one's hands, because she remembers how they used to be and knows that they are no longer who they used to be, because of what happened.

    --

When we would only need each other, we'd breathe together,
Our hands would not be taught to hold another's,
'Cause we were the special two.

And we could only see each other, we'd bleed together,
These arms would not be taught to need another,
'Cause we were the special two.

    --

This final chorus is one of hope. She is now determined that she will fix the relationship. She wants desperately to have the relationship she once did, She believes that she and her loved one will become 'the special two' once more.

General Comment:aha, its funny. my mother was convinced this was about missy's love for her 'lady' freind, seeing as shes homosexual, or bi, or whatever. the line that says 'And we could only see each other, we'll bleed together', she interpreted this as a woman's period and how misssy and her girlfreind get it at the same time. isn't that strange...

My Interpretation:I could be absolutely completely wrong but
I think its about a friendship, its not about love or cheating.
sounds like they did something together maybe they were drunk? Whatever they did resulted in her closest friend being put in danger, something happened to her.
Because it wasnt the singer, she feels guilty like maybe she wishes it was her.
Her guiltiness makes her believe she doesnt deserve anything.
"I've hardly been outside my room in days,
'cause I don't feel that I deserve the sunshine's rays.
The darkness helped until the whiskey wore away,
and it was then I realized the conscience never fades."
She needs to tell the truth to someone even if it means shes embarrassed, she writes "someone old once said to me:"that lies will lock you up with truth the only key." meaning to open yourself and be happy with yourself you need to do the honest thing.
She mentions that people have an idea of how their lives will turn out, and they usually dont include bad things even though as you grow up, things implicate your life and cause it to turn out in a way that you didnt think it would, whether that be bad or good.
Even though theyre in a bad situation right now, the singer says she will fight for her friend, and they will be the "special two" again.
When she talks about being "comfortable and warm inside my shell" then writes that she "couldn't see this place would soon become my hell." I think this means that she cant live with herself over whatever has happens unless she talks to someone, because her "shell" is not safe anymore because it means that she is surrounded with herself, and the things that she knows or has seen.

I guess all these songs that people say they know the "meaning to" can mean different things to every single person.
Therefore i suppose everyone has to make their own beliefs about the meaning to a song.

    General Comment:Agreed beautiful song....

This song to me has a special meaning in a different way...
I had the perfect life - found my soulmate, got married, kids, the white picket fence (not really) - i had it all, life was good.
Then she ended up cheating on me....and basically my dreams shattered when she left me... as I always thought we were the "special 2" and our love could conquer even these obstacles....such is life.
Like the song says, I wish she would fight for us 2 again....but she just gave up, so at least I have this song to comfort me instead in my dream world....

Also this line is beautiful...."So is it better to tell and hurt or lie to save their face, Well I guess the answer is don't do it in the first place."

The sad thing is when someone gets caught - to save face the lies that come out hurt even more. I guess we can all be guilty of it some way or another....but I hope that can be a lesson to us all.... don't do it in the first place!!!

    Peace to you all...

General Comment:I also think she cheated on him.
    and of course, regrets it.

"And you make boundaries you'd never dream to cross, and if you happen to you wake completely lost.
But I will fight for you, be sure that I will fight until we're the special two once again"

    and..

"So is it better to tell and hurt or lie to save their face Well I guess the answer is don't do it in the first place. I know I'm not deserving of your trust from you right now, but if by chance you change your mind you know I will not let you down"

My favortie line in this song is " when you're young you have this image of your life. " How True. You have everything in your life all planned and then you find that shit happens, basically. Growing up, all a girl wants is that cookie-cutter romance, and it is so disappointing to discover that isnt how it works.

General Comment:I know a lot of people think this relates to a relationship, which I acknowledge it could, but to me it fits with a best friend. I had a best friend who I was losing touch with. She'd changed and I just didn't understand her any more. I know this song is about betraying someones trust, but I relate most to the line 'But I will fight for you/Be sure that I will fight/Until we're the special two once again' I did fight, but apparently not hard enough as we've now lost touch.

Another thing I can relate to is the lines in the first verse 'When you're young you have this image of your life...' I'm at an age in my life we're I'm just realising that life isn't so easy as you imagine when you're a kid. I had this big plan for my life, and now I'm realising that you have to work really hard, and there's always unexpected complications.

Anyway, I love the chorus in this song. The descriptions are so powerful and deep. But my favourite line is "Nothing cures the hurt you bring on by yourself, just remembering, just remembering how we were...' So simple and so powerful! One of her best songs
