Just lay it all down. Put your face into my neck and let it fall out.
I know
I know
I know.
I knew before you got home.
This world you're in now,
It doesn't have to be alone,
I'll get there somehow, 'cause
I know I know I know
When, even springtime feels cold.

But I will learn to breathe this ugliness you see,
So we can both be there and we can both share the dark.
And in our honesty, together we will rise,
Out of our nightminds, and into the light
At the end of the fight

You were blessed by a different kind of inner view: it's all magnified.
The highs would make you fly, and the lows make you want to die.
And I was once there, hanging from that very ledge where you are standing.
So I know
I know
I know,
It's easier to let go.

But I will learn to breathe this ugliness you see,
So we can both be there and we can both share the dark.
And in our honesty, together we will rise out of our nightminds
And into the light at the end of the fight.

And in our honesty, together we will rise out of our nightminds
And into the light, at the end of the fight

General Comment:I agree with everything above
I am now currently struggling with depression, and this song means a lot to me, i'm lucky to have someone there for me. The first time I heard this song when I first told my boyfriend what I was going through, he sent me this song and told me to pay attention to the words. It's really a beautiful song.
I love Missy Higgins,I think this is beautiful.

Song Meaning:This song is quite clearly about mental illness, but a unique insight through the eyes of the loved ones and not the sufferer. It holds special meaning for me as my mum has depression and this is the perfect description of how I feel about her. I'll always be here for her. I fight so hard to understand what she's going through and I'd share the darkness with her in an instant if I could only get there. Those last few lines where there is just vocals are so powerful. It's just full of raw and powerful emotion. Missy must have experienced this - it's the only way she could write something so true. I can't listen to this song without tearing up.

General Comment:I agree that the song is probably about someone she knows who is dealing with a mental illness, in particular depression, bi-polar or borderline personality disorder. The lines: 'It's all magnified, The highs would make you fly, But the lows make you want to die' really point to this. Missy Higgins has described herself before as having been depressed and supports a Mental Health charity so its likely this song could be about this.
    Her music is so beautiful.

My Interpretation:This is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. Here are some of my thoughts...

    __________________________
    Just lay it all down
Put your face into my neck and let it fall out
    I know, I know, I know
I knew before you got home
    __________________________

Can you imagine coming home to someone who loves you, and they can tell... before you open your mouth exactly what is happening. I can hear a friend's voice comforting in the moment before tears, "I know, I know, I know..."

    __________________________
But I will learn to breathe this ugliness you see
    __________________________

This line, to me, means I will learn to breathe, to deal with both the self hatred of the hurting person and the darkness that this person sees... it's about saying that the friend will accept and come to this level.

    __________________________
    You were blessed by
A different kind of inner view
    It's all magnified
The highs would make you fly
But the lows make you want to die
    And I was once there
Hanging from that very ledge where you are standing
    So I know, I know, I know
    It's easier to let go
    __________________________

This part is so so true in every single way. People who get depressed are often much more sensitive to the world, they have beautiful souls and a deeper inner view of the world, a different view, and so they are "blessed" in some ways but cursed in others. I don't think it necessarily means that this person has bipolar disorder, just that there are times so full of life and others when there is an insane amount of darkness. And the friend knows that it would be so much easier just to give up.

General Comment:I for one think it's about helping a friend with depression. I know the feeling, since I've helped my best friend through bad times a million times, and it always seems to bring me down. But I'd rather "learn to breath the ugliness she sees" then force her to go through it alone. When I heard this song I cried because it reminded me so much of her. If you are dealing with a depressed loved one it's hard. Listen to the song "The beacon" by A fine Frenzy... It'll make you cry too

General Comment:I can definitely see how this song could be about depression and the like, but I understood it to be about an eating disorder, and somebody telling their friend that they have been there, they know what it is like, but there is hope and they will help them to see the light at the end of the tunnel. "You were blessed by a different kind of inner view, it's all magnified"
I suffer with an eating disorder myself and when I look in the mirror, I do not see myself how everybodyu else sees me. My body image is distorted and magnified, and I look much heavier than I actually am.

"The highs would make you fly, but the lows make you want to die"
The highs would be days where the person suffering from the ED has had a successful fasting period or consumed their caloric goal (eg. 500cal/day), ect. The lows would be the days where they binged, consumed more than the desired calorie intake, ect.

My best friend wrote these lyrics down and gave them to me recently after I told her I am suffering from an ED. I had told her about a month ago and she just told me last week (through the lyrics in this song) that she had suffered from one from 6th-8th grade. It's an incredibly heartfelt and deep song, and definitely one of the best on the album.

General Comment:this song is so relatable, almost like it was sung for me.
"The highs would make you fly
But the lows make you want to die", especially those lines.
and yes, obviously it is about depression and helping someone you love fight it.

General Comment:Losing someone to depression is like losing a life, and it's so hard to get help, or have someone understand you.
