Ah, now I don't hardly know her
But I think I could love her
Crimson and clover

Ah when she comes walking over
Now I've been waitin' to show her
Crimson and clover over and over

Yeah, my, my such a sweet thing
I wanna do everything
What a beautiful feeling
Crimson and clover over and over

Crimson and clover over and over
Crimson and clover over and over
Crimson and clover over and over
Crimson and clover over and over

    General Comment:Finally my full comment:

Crimson, a deep red, is the color of passion: engrossed involvement. Clover, by contrast, is a free-roaming wild flower with light green leaves, planted

General Comment:This remains one of mine and my ex-husband's favorite songs to jam to when hanging out. It is 100% about sex. We think crimson and clover is just a metaphor for all of the sights/sounds/etc. you experience during good sex. Makes sense they'd be two of his favorite colors.

General Comment:Here's what I think. I'm not completely sure about the symbolism of "Crimson & Clover", but the meaning of this song isn't about drugs. Read the lyrics people! Although, perhaps the singer is comparing the feeling of love to the feeling of being "high". Crimson and Clover could mean 'complementary', ya know? Because aren't red and green complementary colors (anyone who has taken art classes?)?? I think the singer is trying to say he's fallen in love at first sight ("Now, I don't hardly know her, but I think I could love her."), and if she gave him the chance ("Well if she come walkin' over"), he could show her that they're perfect for each other ("Now I've been waitin' to show her crimson & clover."); they complement each other.

General Comment:The song title came about before the lyrics were written. Tommy Jones chose the title for its unknown meaning when combining his favorit color (crimson) with his favorite flower (clover). James first wrote a song for the phrase with bassist Mike Vale. But that song was dismissed. And James collaborated with drummer Peter Lucia Jr for the lyrics we have today.

General Comment:I love how everyone on drugs thinks that everything is about drugs... "Have you read the Bible? It's totally about drugs man." And everyone in (or out of) love thinks that everything is about love...

Tommy James is a treasure! And "Crimson and Clover" is a PERFECT song! Mostly because it triggers such different responses to the question, and songmeanings.net asks the same question, "What does this song mean to YOU?"

    There's beauty in its ambiguity.
