Lyrics for Road to Joy as interpreted by sandmann930

Road to Joy Lyrics
The sun came up with no conclusions
Flowers sleeping in their beds
The city cemetery's humming
I'm wide awake, it's morning

I have my drugs, I have my women
They keep away my loneliness
My parents, they have their religions
But sleep in seperate houses

I read the body count out of the paper
And now it's written all over my face
No one ever plans to sleep out in the gutter
Sometimes that's just the most comfortable place

So I'm drinking, breathing, writing, singing
Every day I'm on the clock
My mind races with all my longings
But can't keep up with what I got

I hope I don't sound too ungratefull
Well, history gave modern man
A telephone to talk to strangers
Machine guns and a camera lens

So when you're asked to fight a war that's over nothing
It's best to join the side that's going to win
No one's sure how all of this got started
But we're going to make them goddamn certain how it's gonna end
(Oh yeah we will, oh yeah, we will!)

I could have been a famous singer
If I had someone else's voice
But failure's always sounded better
Let's fuck it up boys, make some noise!

Such a good song. He's only played it live but it has the great lines "I have my drugs I have my woman
they keep away my loneliness
My parents, they have their religions
But sleep in seperate houses"
Sooooo brilliant
And at the end of the song they always rock out like crazy. I'ts fucking amazing!!

This is definitely my favorite Bright Eyes song. I saw it played live at the Vote for Change concert and I was like "Wow." It's amazing because it REALLY showcases Conor's voice and feelings about politics and life in general. The end line scandalilzed my mother and I couldn't stop laughing!

The first time I heard this song was in 2002. He played it in our little venue in Omaha during a protest show against the war.

i love how he recognizes he doesn't exactly have the greatest voice (even though i think it's perfect for the emotion in his songs) at the very end. and the very end is incredible anyway, the way the music explodes after "let's fuck it up, boys, make some noise!" i can't wait to see them.

This song reminds me of Lets Not Shit Ourselves (to love and be loved) for some reason, the same sense of..yea,i dont have a proper adjective for it. This song reminds me of to love and be loved in a huge way.

it reminds me of lets not shit ourselves also. i think its just the underlying political emotion in it, sets it apart from most of the stuff he writes for bright eyes.

the end of this song really makes it where the trumpet and drums are just going nuts.

this song's called road to joy since it sounds a lot like ode to joy. i love how upbeat this song is, how it makes me feel really great and it still has content. it's just a really great song. very well balanced.

Like scarlettdawn and promisexkept said, I reminds me alot of lets not shit ourselves, but with a more raw emotion in his voice. I thinks it because both of these songs have alot of instruments used, and the lyrical style is pretty similar.
Yeah..... :)

pap3r thin walls, I thought about those few lines too, but I don't understand what he means by,
"we're gonna make 'em goddamn certain how it's gonna end."

how exactly IS it gonna end?

daddysgun,
He's making a fun statement with that. If the world were a marathon, america would finish the 26 miles before anyone else started. I think this might be a statement against people who claim to be "godly" and whatnot. I can't quite explain what i mean, but i got the point of it. "we're gonna make em god damn certain how it's going to end" we're going to win, we're going to win and everyone knows it. We can't lose, but we're going to prove a point anyway...when there is nothing to prove.

how can you win, much less fight a war when your not fighting with anyone, and the only objective that wasnt a complete lie (to get saddam) has happened already?

I think it is so clear what that verse is about, it is completely directed at the war in Iraq. It speaks to all of those who are blindly following this war and claiming it as patriotism. It speaks to those, if asked, could not really tell us why we are at war in Iraq but still believe we should kick those towel heads asses.

this song is awesome.. i love the way he twisted up ode to joy and made it sound so great. along with spumpkins i think his voice is absolutely perfect with the emotion that he has built up into his songs. conor oberst is one amazing boy.

man, how im sick of green day fans.
anyway the album im wide awake, its morning has to be the best bright eyes album so far. in my humble opinion. i love the line in this song, 'i could have been a famous singer, if i had someone else's voice.' some people don't like his voice, for wateva reason... but i think its amazing, because its different. hopefully bright eyes will come back to australia sometime. they were here a month ago, when i was overseas! life is unfair.

AHHH!
I always thought that fevers and mirrors would be my favourite untill i got this album, i dont like digital ash in a digital urn to much.
And i was so pissed that when they came down here they only played at the metro and im not 18. and they did that show with R.E.M and littlebirdy but noone would shell out the money to go with me!

waste_of_paint,

This might seem a bit on the elitist side however, if you're going to listen to Bright Eyes I believe it's your duty to atleast sound intelligible. "for whateva reason" To me, it sounds a bit teeny bopper, please don't fuck this band up for me and anyone else who likes this band whom of which are capable of spelling out "whatever".
