I really want to tell you something
This is just the way I am
I really want to tell you something, but I can't
You make me want to be a man

Arguments that have no meaning
This is just the way I am
You really want to tell me something, bu you can't
You make me want to be a man

The thunder and the rain called you and you came
We didn't need to say much to communicate
Now it's different; 99% is misinterpreted

I really want to tell you something
This is just the way I am
I really want to tell you something, but I can't
You make me want to be a man

Arguments that have no meaning
This is just the way I am
You really want to tell me something, bu you can't
You make me want to be a man

Every word you say finds a home in me
Nothing that anyone could ever say
Could hurt me like this
Baby please, don't light that cigarette
Don't light that cigarette

I really want to tell you something
This is just the way I am
I really want to tell you something, but I can't
You make me want to be a man

Arguments that have no meaning
This is just the way I am
You really want to tell me something, bu you can't
You make me want to be a man

I really want to tell you something
This is just the way I am
I really want to tell you something, but I can't
You make me want to be a man

Arguments that have no meaning
This is just the way I am
You really want to tell me something, bu you can't
You make me want to be a man

General Comment:At First when I listened to this song, I thought she was singing this about a girl. Saying she wanted to be a man for a womanin, in order to have a relationship with her.

But when I listened to it again, I thought the lyrics were about Utada's feelings for a male partner. Explaining how she felt that she had to act like a man for the person in this song in order to make things work and for them to have understanding but they don't. And this makes her want to be a man.

To be honest, I prefer the first idea. Haha, instead of the secound. So I am just going to continue thinking it's the about a woman. XD

General Comment:The ciggarette part has been bothering people but I think I have an idea.

Sometimes when people smoke they use it as a comfort or escape when someone bad happens. If Hikaru were to have gotten into a fights with her husband a lot and he started to smoke more often she could be upset. The fact that she's the reason he's smoking more and we all know somking isn't good for you.

I think the smoking could mean he gave up on finding a solution and listening to her and just lit a cig.

I'd be upset if someone did that to me.

General Comment:Was she high when she wrote this? I mean, you can come up with your own meaning (being gay is one thing that never came to my mind, but it works!), but there is nothing in this song or her biography that will make you sure of what you're saying...

What AkaiChou said is EXACTLY what I thought the song meant. Go me! Especially if Utada really said that herself.

General Comment:Utada-san said this one herself. This song is about how she used to get into fights with her husband all the time. She felt that they were so distant and couldn't understand each other. And she got to thinking. Perhaps, if she was a man, she would be able to understand him better.

General Comment:Can't believe people got lost when they heard it. Its about gender difference and how it effects how people look at what someone says to the disadvantage of a woman talking to a man and trying to solve things with them. He brushes her away when she doesn't want him to light the cigarette in verse 2. I like the song! The video is awesome! In my eyes japanese culture puts men way higher up than women but it can very much also apply to american culture!

General Comment:When I first heard this song I was like WHAT MAN, but then I listened to it closer and I was like "huh"

I think in agreement with some other posts here, it's about how a gender in difference can make it so people don't really see eye to eye. I was thinking that at first it's hard to understand because of the cultural differences from Japan and American. She has something to confess but she can't because she'll looked down upon because she's a woman, but if she was a man it may be more understandable. ( Although that's here in the states too: a little cliche but if a guy has alot of chicks he's a hero, if a girl has alot of guys she's a whore )

I think with the "don't light the cigarette," the desperation in her voice really makes me think that she's trying to express herself to someone and they're sort of tuning her out by just chilling and smoking. So she's like "Stop it, please, listen to me."

    But that's just me

General Comment:Actually, I saw her in an interview, and she wrote it after having an argument with her husband, and she wished that she was a guy so that they would be on the same page, so that she could see it from his point of view.
