The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
Here come the morning that I say goodbye to ya
Here come the morning that I say goodbye
But I don't turn around 'cause the reason is treason
Here come the morning that I say goodbye to ya
Here come the morning that'll say goodbye
But I don't turn around 'cause the reason is treason
See the stones coming at my window
See they left man no protection
Tell his family that he won't be ok
K-I-L-L!
Check the angles from both forces
Overcome by the need to fight it
Fight it, fight it, fight it, fight it
Fight it, fight it, fight it, fight it
Fight it, fight it, fight it, fight it
Here come the morning that I say goodbye to ya
Here come the morning that I say goodbye
But I don't turn around 'cause the reason is treason
Here come the morning that I say goodbye to ya
Here come the morning that I say goodbye

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
Blue
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.
the version with both verses(apparently the original version, also called "jacknife lee version") is on the album as well as a hidden track a few minutes after u boat. i haven't a clue as to why they changed it, the album version is so fucking flat and boring compared to the original.
i reckon the lyrics are about society today, "rubicon" referencing to caesar's military coup that founded the roman empire and in the long run today's european culture. (or it could be a reference to tangerine dream´s old album "rubycon"?) "see the stones coming at my window, see the left man no protection, tell his family that he will be ok K-I-L-L." - about soldiers being shipped off to (more often than not meaningless) war? "turn away from yourself in silence, you can't finish the country using you" - (would be great to actually get the correct lyrics, wouldn't it?) like i said, about society and trying to fight it eventhough you know there's really no point.
by far the best kasabian song out there, this. both lyrically and musically(jacknife lee version).
I like both versions. I think I like this version better, though. Lyrically, the Jackknife version is more interesting. But this version is truer to Kasabian's sound. The reason they "changed it" is that they didn't like what Jackknife Lee was doing mixing their album, so they ditched him. I like the Kasabian sound better. Flat and boring? Well, that's not how I hear it.
I think this song is about how people are let down by thier government, especially considereing recent events. Kasabian have a kind of running thing with communism, and that would seem to continue here. Basicalle saying the government are wrong (reason) is treason. not 100% but thats wot i get out of it, especially after seeing the video. Not sure if it refers to Us or Uk tho, possibly commy russia, isnt serge russian or somethin? Think the churchill thing was probably sarcastic, cant see them being big fans of his! Love th song + album!
Left out the line 'I hear the sounds over the wall, I hear the sounds over the wall'. And it's 'Here come the morning THAT I'll say goodbye to you.' :-D
Quality song, Kasabians best I reckon. I dawdled "'cause the reason is treason" all over my English file at college... It's one of those songs that gets a hold of you.
Really klass music...very dark soundin :)
Best Kasabian song definatley. Agree with I got soul, sounds dark (in a good, indie type way...)
Is there another version of this song? I just heard one which doesn't have the first verse and has a couple of lines missing from the second verse, but has an interlude towards the end, with the words 'I hear the sirens all around'. I much prefer the version that has both verses, though - the one I heard recently sounded rather dull and repetitive.
This is a bit of a stretch, but I believe this song is about a guy who has to leave his girl to pursue political initiatives...anti-war protesting seems to be the reason, which is treated like treason in most countries, whether they preach freedom of expression, speech, assembly, etc or not. "Crossing the rubicon" is an expression that refers to reaching the point of no return, as Julius Caesar had broken the law(treason?) at this point and had no choice but to go all out and expand the empire. Legend has it that Caesar was very skeptical about the decision for teh days leading up to the crossing as well....this is echoed by the man having to decide between the chick and the resistence when he says "Check the angles from both forces, overcome by the need to fight it" and "the chains of dirt passed on to me" could refer to the burden of knowing that there is a better way than war and having no choice but to pursue a life of resistence. Verdict: Sick Track.
@realeyes_realize Every song is not about breaking up with a girl. This one certainly isn't.
This is a blinder of a tune! Especially live, it blew me away! I dont really think there is a meaning to this song, i just enjoy it for what it is; a cracking tune!
AWESOME! TOTALLY AWESOME! I saw these live in Hyde Park last night and they blew me away... so much energy and power on stage... this song is fantastic... not 100% on the meaning, i think what lindie said is the closest i have seen to making some sense out of it?! couple of errors in the lyrics above tho... its "see the left man no protection" and "tell his family that he will be ok" - however, i think that in the hidden track after u-boat it then says "tell his family that he WONT be ok"
@rufstuf I think it is just the singer's voice that makes it sound like "won't." I'm pretty sure it's "tell his family that he will be okay."
