Lyrics for Orange Sky as interpreted by geekusa

Orange Sky Lyrics
Well I had a dream
I stood beneath an orange sky
Yes I had a dream
I stood beneath an orange sky
With my brother standing by
With my brother standing by
I said brother, you know you know
It's a long road we've been walking on
Brother you know it is, you know it is
Such a long road we've been walking on

And I had a dream
I stood beneath an orange sky
With my sister standing by
With my sister standing by
I said sister, here is what I know now
Here is what I know now
Goes like this
In your love, my salvation lies
In your love, my salvation lies
In your love, my salvation lies
In your love, in your love, in your love

But sister you know I'm so weary
And you know sister
My hearts been broken
Sometimes, sometimes
My mind is too strong to carry on
Too strong to carry on

When I am alone
When I've thrown off the weight of this crazy stone
When I've lost all care for the things I own
That's when I miss you, that's when I miss you, that's when I miss you
You who are my home
You who are my home
And here is what I know now
Here is what I know now
Goes like this
In your love, my salvation lies
In your love, my salvation lies
In your love, my salvation lies
In your love, my salvation lies
In your love, my salvation lies
In your love, my salvation lies
In your love, my salvation lies
In your love, in your love, in your love

Well I had a dream
I stood beneath an orange sky
Yes I had a dream
I stood beneath an orange sky
With my brother and my sister standing by
With my brother and my sister standing by
With my brother and my sister standing by

I think the idea about family fits, though maybe not in the blood related variety. I think in this case, he's talking about the people closest to him. I see, when he's talking about standing beneath an orange sky, he's talking about a fire. Perhaps a house fire, as he talks about losing all of his possesions. That's when he realises that the things of real importence are right there with him. His 'home' is the people he loves. With them, he find salvation. The ability to go on. But, it took losing everything else for him to truly appreciate that. And, I'm not much of a religous person, so I think maybe the brotherhood, or sisterhood in reference, isn't necessarily 'in christ'. I think it's much more about humanity. The bonds that we create.

This song was on The O.C., last scene of episode 11, first season... And that song is so sweet... It's wonderful how The O.C. always uses the perfect song in the perfect moment... All the lyrics are wonderful... And I think it 'cause I'm romantic and a lot sensitive... I love the song and The O.C. obviously ^^ ... REALLY SWEET ...

Personally, I believe this song is about grief. Perhaps the loss of a parent. Following such a traumatic event, this person disconnected interpersonally, and later comes to realize that the only way to heal is to share the pain he feels with loved ones, for we are social beings and our identity and psychopathology is influenced by the significant people in our life. Isolating ourselves from the people who matter the most creates a sense of emptiness. We lose our sense of self. He knows his "brother" and "sister" will always be there for him. They are his support system, his "salvation." After the long road full of grief, mourning, sadness, anger, etc. it is the people who provide the love and support necessary to cope with this tragedy.
Many will probably disagree but due to my background it is what this song means to me.

from wiki:
"Orange Sky" has been used in a number of television and movie productions, including The OC, House, Prison Break, Ugly Betty, Ladder 49, "The Russell Girl", and a trailer for the film Paradise Now. The same song was also featured in the movie Garden State, although it did not appear on the official soundtrack. More recently, the song was featured on a Season 1 episode of Dirty Sexy Money.

I am so in love with this song. I think it has one of the most amazing lines ever : "My salvation lies in your love." This has such a deep meaning. To say to another person that your salvation, your redemption, is all based upon them is so powerful, but also from the spiritual side, salvation would like in Gods love. I also really like the part where he says. :"I said brother, you know you know
It's a long road we've been walking on
Brother you know it is, you know it is
Such a long road we've been walking on"

I think this is so representative of a person who has lived a long hard life. He has probabaly made a lot of mistakes and let a lot of people down.

I can see a person who is in prison, because of the way he talks about dreaming of standing side by side with his brother and sister (something that could not happen if he is incarcerated) The orange syk can also represent being there with them when the day is done, when he is free.

He tells her his heart has been broken, because his life is gone, his hopes and dreams will now likily never become relized but her love for him helps him to hold on to that last glimer of hope.

I think the ends really shows it too. When he says: "When I am alone
When I've thrown off the weight of this crazy stone
When I've lost all care for the things I own
That's when I miss you, that's when I miss you, that's when I miss you
You who are my home"

Daily he has to survive, get by, life the prison life. But at night, alone, he can stop and miss them. He doesn't have to worry for those few moments and he can think about them, and dream of his life back with them. That is his home, not the walls and fences that hold him in.

This song is just beautiful. It has a specific meaning for me.

My sister passed away a few years ago at the age of 18. She could put a smile on anyone's face no matter the situation. And when I'm stressed and feel the weight of the world on my shoulders, her presence is what I miss most.

When he talks about his brother, to me he is referring to anyone who has weathered the storms with him. It's an acknowledgment of everything they've been through together.

The orange sky imagery can mean a couple of things. To me it's a sunset than can signify the end of something. The end of the day, the end of a troubled period of time in ones life, or the actual end of ones life. And thoughts/dreams of his "brother" and "sister," at the end of it all, put him at ease.

This song is so beautiful!
I don't know, something about it seems kind of nostalgic. Like, he's looking back at a time when whoever he's talking about (either actual siblings or people as close as siblings) were still around and close to him.
And the fact that he has to dream it means that he's kind of recalling that time when he could just go to those people and say "I need to talk to you. I'm feeling down." And he misses that.
...Or something like that. ^^;

This song Moves me. Simply put, it does indeed feel like a hymn. Alexi is a great story teller. I look forward to more of his music, and anyone who hasn't heard more than this one song should get the entire CD. It has at least 3 other strong songs like:

Dream about Flying
Breathe
Love you More.

This just simply a great song. I think its meaning is about someone who has a very close family relationship and how he wants much more out of life than he is actually getting.

Oooooh. I just love this song. I can't stop crying right now. Please listen to the whole thing.... Over and over and over again... Life is so sad and beautiful.

Sitting at my computer in my PJs on the 4th of July sobbing to this song... Help me.

I'll be okay. I think.

This song was in the movie "Away We Go" with John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph. It was an awesome movie, and the soundtrack (which was 80% Alexi Murdoch) was amazing! :)

i'm not necessarily athiest but i don't follow any religions and i don't worship any god. i do, however, think that that this song is religiously oriented. It seems to be saying that, to those who are religious, god is everything: mother, father, sister, brother. God has been there through the entirety of their life's journey. God is their bedrock that they always come back too especially when things are bad as opposed losing their faith. I'm not sure what the significance is of the sky being orange though.

I definitely agree that any piece of creative work can be taken in multiple ways and if it's truly great then it should have multiple layers of meaning. it doesn't hurt that it is a beautiful song either ;)
