Lyrics for Vertigo as interpreted by Lyra

Vertigo Lyrics
Unos dos tres catorce!

Lights go down, it’s dark
The jungle is your head
Can’t rule your heart
A feeling is so much stronger than
A thought
Your eyes are wide
And though your soul
It can’t be bought
Your mind can wander

Hello hello
I’m at a place called Vertigo
It’s everything I wish I didn’t know
Except you give me something I can feel, feel

The night is full of holes
As bullets rip the sky
Of ink with gold
They twinkle as the
Boys play rock and roll
They know they can’t dance
At least they know

I can’t stand the beats
I’m asking for the cheque
The girl with crimson nails
Has Jesus round her neck
Swinging to the music
Swinging to the music
Oh oh oh oh

Hello hello
I’m at a place called Vertigo
It’s everything I wish I didn’t know
But you give me something I can feel, feel

Check mated
Oh yeah
Hours of fun

All of this, all of this can be yours
All of this, all of this can be yours

All of this, all of this can be yours
Just give me what I want and no-one gets hurt

Hello hello
We’re at a place called Vertigo
Lights go down and all I know
Is that you give me something
I can feel your love teaching me how
Your love is teaching me how, how to kneel
Yeah yeah yeah yeah

I believe I read somewhere on their site that this song was similar to Discotheque.... A raver questioning the direction of their life and finding religion, while still being tempted by their "sinful" lifestyle. (All of this, all of this can be yours Just give me what I want and no-one gets hurt). I think it makes sense.

Spotting a girl with Jesus 'round the neck? Supports my theory.

I hate this song so much. Every time I hear it on that stupid iPod commercial, I'm filled with the sudden impulse to kidnap Bono, slap ducttape over his mouth, tie him to a rocket and ship him off into the sun.

Uhh... yeah. U2 is generally okay, but this song was one of those hits that never ever goes away, and I hate it. Die, "Vertigo". Groooar.

Anyone that thinks the 1,2,3,14 was an accident is fucking stupid. The 1,2,3,14 means that this is their 14th album and Bono said he's going back to their earlier roots(not that europop trash they had been putting out for a decade). So the 14th album is going back to their first 3 albums sound. You honestly think if he MEANT to say 1,2,3,4 that not ONE producer, other bandmate, the record label wouldn't have caught that mistake?

get real

"Lights go down, it's dark"

Brilliant. U2 never fails when it comes to teaching me something new. Ok. I'll admit this song rocks. I just don't like paying attention to the lyrics.

learn2kneel,
i was just praying that someone else on this page came up with that one also, it makes sense, U2 is catholic, being from ireland, and if you know the bible really well they make a lot of references to people in the bible... such as jesus and moses...

First, I'm amazed at the arguments. I'm REALLY amazed that Viro has choosen to spend so much time telling all of us how much he/she hates U2, I'm amazed how much PASSION a band that you hate has stirred up in your heart (or maybe your soul). I think maybe you should ask yourself why you care so much?

Second... LEARN2KNEEL. I think you may have something. Might be a stretch but I don't put it past them. Exodus 3:14

Third... I know that in my own life, (I was born in 62) I've really enjoyed U2 since the Red Rocks Album but I've never fully understood them till I read the book, "Walk On: The Spiritual Journey of U2".

U2 speaks in broad themes, wide sweeping themes that could easily span an album. Bono at the Hall of Fame Induction said himself that October was "about God". What is significant about that statement is not that he is talking about God but that he said the WHOLE ALBUM was about a theme: God. Not a phrase, not a song but the album. You could even say that the DECADE of the 90's was about "searching".

One of the most interesting reviews I've come across was someone who said that (it could have been the band in an interview) that they should have got the kid from the BOY album cover and put him (as a grown up) on the cover of Atomic Bomb. Where BOY was about innocence, Atomic Bomb is about Innocence regained. That would be a career sweeping thematic arch.

I've been watching the set lists from their Vertigo shows on the tour and it is facinating to see how they are arranging and re-arranging the songs to tell a long 22 song story. And what are they ending with? On most nights its...
All Because of You (I AM - God)
Yahweh (Jehovah God)
40 (I waited patiently for the Lord)

I REALLY believe that those of you that go thru so much work to tell us that U2 sucks and that this is just a sell out iPod commercial have been blinded by your own choices. I'm glad you are here, but I hope you will choose to HEAR.

Read the Walk On book, borrow it from your library if you are too cheap to buy it. It's facinating.

LEARN2KNEEL... have you read that book? You would love it!

dont know why im posting this it will probably never be read.

this song has almost the same bass line as A Sort of Homecoming. dont know why U2 would reuse something that they haven't used for about 15 years

What the fuck this song sounds like a cheap retread of Elevation? Whats the matter, record companies wouldnt them re-release Elevation so they just took the nonsense lyrics, the wailing and boring guitar work and repackaged it?

The only thing worse than U2 is a snobby U2 fan. They think they're so hip now that U2 has their own iPod commercial. Wow, you're on an iPod commercial?

BIG FUCKING DEAL!!!

Other than the shitty song (which I'll get to shortly), the U2 Vertigo commercial uses the same black silhouette style as every other iPod commercial with one exception: Bono's face (the lead singer) is visible along with the rest of the band. Every iPod commercial was the same until U2 came along and took a shit on convention. As sanctimonious as U2 tries to be, the reason their faces are lit during the commercial isn't because they're larger-than-life rock stars, but rather, because they're not. When was the last time U2 had a hit? Or a flop? Or anything for that matter? Their last major release was in 2000, an album which was so inconsequential that merely labeling it as such bumps it into a lesser category of sucktitude (but just barely, so eat shit). If their faces weren't lit up, nobody would know who they were except for the most diehard U2 fans, and nobody cares what they think.

As for the "Vertigo" song itself, it's a mix of twangy guitars, unnecessary spanish, and Bono's stupid glasses. By the way, just because a singer wears stupid goggles doesn't mean that they're suddenly cool or hip. Oooh look! Bono the rock star is wearing redneck Nascar goggles, let's all fellate him for being so rebellious; take that Hollywood! They're still the same goggles that dumbass Nascar fans wear to every boring Nascar "event." Man I hate Nascar. And while I'm at it, here's a quick open letter to the NASCAR community: quit writing poems about Dale Earnhardt. Nobody cares. And no, it wasn't NASCAR's fault for not making the tracks wide enough. Nobody would watch NASCAR if it weren't for the wrecks because it's BORING. You love the wrecks because it gives you people something to talk about in your boring lives; don't get all teary eyed when one of your redneck heroes bites it, you hypocritical turds. The wall won, get over it.

Anyway, back to Vertigo: this song sucks so much because of the unique tag-team trio of shitty music, the forced chic of iPod ads, and its stupid fan base. I looked around on some U2 message boards to see what the fans were saying about this song and its turgid lyrics, here's what fan member "Bob" has to say:

Vertigo actually has some seriously heavy lyric - but I bet most of mainstream radio listeners will never know what they mean - I love that! It makes me feel priviledged [sic] to know what the man has to say - there are so many invaluable messages in their albums, certainly this one will be another thought provoking and life influencing scripture.

Here's a sample of the "seriously heavy lyrics" in Vertigo:

WoooAoo! WoooAoo! WoooAoo! WoooAoo!

And who could forget this poignant verse:

Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah,
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah.

Yeah, real heavy lyrics, dipshit. When Bono's not mumbling like an idiot, he's trying to be emotional by flailing his arms in the air like he's so overcome that he can't help but bellow out a limp-dick line like "I can feeeeEEEEEEeeeeeel." Pussy.

Does it surprise anyone else that someone has the time to surf around for songs that they hate and write diatribes to piss people off? Go play an RPG or write some HTML code or something and stop wasting our time.

The reason I originally came here is because I was listening to this song, and caught a faint hint of the Jesus in the desert thing (All this can be yours...) and wanted to see if anyone else saw the same. Thanks for the clarification, and more to think about.

I'm always amazed at the depth of U2's lyrics, and frequently disappointed at people's rush to assume there is none.

"All of this, all of this can be yours
All of this, all of this can be yours
All of this, all of this can be yours
Just give me what I want and no-one gets hurt…"

This is Satan trying to tempting Jesus on top of the the mountains. Notice that it is repeated three times. (i.e. Satan tried to tempt Jesus 3 times)

" AGAIN, THE DEVIL TAKETH HIM UP INTO AN EXCEEDING HIGH MOUNTAIN, AND SHOWETH HIM ALL THE KINGDOMS OF THE WORLD, AND THE GLORY OF THEM; AND SAITH UNTO HIM, ALL THESE THINGS WILL I GIVE THEE, IF THOU WILT FALL DOWN AND WORSHIP ME."

Notice the word "EXCEEDING HIGH MOUNTAIN", Notice the title "Vertigo"!
