Lyrics for Vertigo as interpreted by Lyra

Vertigo Lyrics
Unos dos tres catorce!

Lights go down, it’s dark
The jungle is your head
Can’t rule your heart
A feeling is so much stronger than
A thought
Your eyes are wide
And though your soul
It can’t be bought
Your mind can wander

Hello hello
I’m at a place called Vertigo
It’s everything I wish I didn’t know
Except you give me something I can feel, feel

The night is full of holes
As bullets rip the sky
Of ink with gold
They twinkle as the
Boys play rock and roll
They know they can’t dance
At least they know

I can’t stand the beats
I’m asking for the cheque
The girl with crimson nails
Has Jesus round her neck
Swinging to the music
Swinging to the music
Oh oh oh oh

Hello hello
I’m at a place called Vertigo
It’s everything I wish I didn’t know
But you give me something I can feel, feel

Check mated
Oh yeah
Hours of fun

All of this, all of this can be yours
All of this, all of this can be yours

All of this, all of this can be yours
Just give me what I want and no-one gets hurt

Hello hello
We’re at a place called Vertigo
Lights go down and all I know
Is that you give me something
I can feel your love teaching me how
Your love is teaching me how, how to kneel
Yeah yeah yeah yeah

Also it is "I cant stand the beat", not "I can sell the beat"

the uno, dos, tres, catorce part starts out the song like many typical rock songs but then throws in the catorce (14) as a reference to this being their 14th album (12 studio and two live). also it tells you this ain't your typical rock song b/c it's u2. i aslo think the spanish is meant to invoke "passion". as far as the rest of the lyrics, i think it's all in the title. vertigo. when you're high but you're afraid of falling. he's dancing and feeling good. the drums are in his head. his soul can't be bought but his head starts to deceive him. he feels foolish for thinking he can dance. he goes to leave but is drawn in again by the girl w/ crimson nails (sex) and and cross around her neck (the perhaps false advertisement of belief in God). the devil tempts him like he did Jesus by trying to covince him he can have it both ways. but all he knows is God's love gives him something he can feel.

This song sucks so much. It's funny when they played it for the first time at an awesome radio station in my city everyone called in (even U2 fans) and said how much it sucks, because it really does.

I'd rather stick a soldering iron in my ears than listen to this crap.

Just what we need, more hispanic crap, as if we don't have enough of the crap in this country already. They should go tour with Ricky Martin for this song, thety would sound great together.

I, for one, love this song as a standalone, without comparing it to other U2 songs or other songs in the genre, or other songs my favourite radio station plays...

I think if you listen to it with an open mind, it's just excellent. And although there's no "set in stone" meaning and it may lack the depth of some other U2 songs, there are some definite biblical/religious references worth chatting about. Plus I just love the "high" feeling... the song really does a good job recreating the simple but elusive to description feeling of being on top of the world. So. Love it for what it is on the surface (rocking euphora) or leave it. Peace.

U2 used to be good, some of their stuff still is, but i honestly think they are too fucking old to be playing stuff like this, they should just all split up, and play solo music on acoustic guitars

This song cracks me up: they ripped off Sonic Youth's "Dirty Boots". If you like this song you should definitely check it (and them) out.

This is one of the best U2 songs I have heard beat-wise. The lyrics don't bother me, and I like these faster songs anyway. Is it just me or is U2 one of the few bands left that actually make new sounds?

Heh, if people can't say more than "this song rocks U2 rocks!" or "this song sucks U2 sucks!" then really, go away, because everyone reading those lines, whether they agree or not, is going to laugh. (This goes to you people "who tlk lik ths.")...
---
I love this song because, 14 should always come after 3. The numbers 4-13 are really overrated anyway. Not to mention that 14 is actially spelled quatorce, if I'm not mistaken...

On to the juice. This song obviously dosen't have alot of depth. More depth than alot of much I've seen around here, but still it's just not that deep (It sounds like they wrote the lyrics while stoned). However, the music, along with the lyrics, make for a pretty powerful and good-damn-feeling song. Think of this song as more of a musical masterpiece with a dash of cheesy lyrics to sex it up a bit. Where I come from we call this sort of music Cheesecore. Good stuff. =)

Ander Knight you are right no other bands out there are original none of these songs sound anything like U2's past album. Give me a break.
It was a song about gun control. That include a bunch of rants and raves.
Everybody in the band told Bono it sucks and that this song is not a rebel song. So they made this.
Bono is a good counter.

'Fear, paranoia, these are the type of things we wanted from 'Vertigo'. The album ends in quite an ecstatic place and, so we wanted to start off with a little bit of electric shock treatment. It's a club maybe, and you're supposed to be having the time of your life, but you want to kill yourself (laughs)….it's a light little ditty. These are nervous times, they really are, you turn on the news, you think 'Wow, who's next? My brother, my sister, my uncle, my aunt …nervous times.'
'It's a dizzy feeling, vertigo, a sort of sick feeling, when you get up to the top of something and there's only one way to go - that's not a dictionary definition, that's mine. And in my head I create a club, called Vertigo, with all these people in it, and the music is just not the music you want to hear, the people are not the people you want to be with. And then you just see somebody, she's got a cross round her neck, and you kind of focus on it because you can't focus on anything else, and you find a little, tiny, fragment of salvation there.'

as for the whole unos, dos, tres, catorce v. once, doce, trece, catorce... watch bono count off on different videos.
i've heard the steve lilywhite thing. (albums 1, 2, 3 & 14) it makes sense alot more than some ideas. as for the whole 'drink involved' it makes me laugh because it very well may be true too. (and is it just be or did i count 17 albums... dang. which ones 'don't count'

It HAS to be "uno". Listen to when he sings the song live. Ive heard a handful of recent U2 appearances where they have played Vertigo, and each time, I CLEARLY hear "uno" No "s" whatsoever.

I just met Bono last month and got my picture with him when he was in Memphis. He is extremely nice. He is like 5"2 though. The song is ok. It is getting overplayed. I have no idea what it means.
