Lyrics for Vertigo as interpreted by Lyra

Vertigo Lyrics
Unos dos tres catorce!

Lights go down, it’s dark
The jungle is your head
Can’t rule your heart
A feeling is so much stronger than
A thought
Your eyes are wide
And though your soul
It can’t be bought
Your mind can wander

Hello hello
I’m at a place called Vertigo
It’s everything I wish I didn’t know
Except you give me something I can feel, feel

The night is full of holes
As bullets rip the sky
Of ink with gold
They twinkle as the
Boys play rock and roll
They know they can’t dance
At least they know

I can’t stand the beats
I’m asking for the cheque
The girl with crimson nails
Has Jesus round her neck
Swinging to the music
Swinging to the music
Oh oh oh oh

Hello hello
I’m at a place called Vertigo
It’s everything I wish I didn’t know
But you give me something I can feel, feel

Check mated
Oh yeah
Hours of fun

All of this, all of this can be yours
All of this, all of this can be yours

All of this, all of this can be yours
Just give me what I want and no-one gets hurt

Hello hello
We’re at a place called Vertigo
Lights go down and all I know
Is that you give me something
I can feel your love teaching me how
Your love is teaching me how, how to kneel
Yeah yeah yeah yeah

I never liked this song when i first heard it i thought it was crap. but it didn,t stop me from buying the album. I thought original of the species was the best track. I didn't think they would release it. then one day i was watching TRL on mtv and the videeo to species made its debut. and bono talked about the song and video he had alot to say about it.

Uno, dos, tres, catorce (1, 2, 3, 14) does not refer to U2's albums. You have to remember they do make biblical references ... and I think it's far from a coincidence that
the 1st testament
the 2nd book
the 3rd chapter, and
the 14th verse happens to be, "And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you."

The Same Pretentious Shit U2's been Doing Since They Got Popular In the Late 80s. Fuck U2. I Hate Boner...err, Bono. The Edge reuses Riffs Shamelessly. Most of them are the same, tweaked.

I don't know how Bono did it, but somehow he managed to interfere with the time space continium and become a witness to an incident that happened 5 years ago when I was at a rave and off my head on a powerful mixture of drugs and nearly overdosed- over the next 3 days I had drug induced psychosis and God showed me hell- the direction where my life was heading- that whole experience eventually lead me to becoming a Christian- and then Bono wrote a song about it called Vertigo- you guys all think its about something else, but really it's about ME ME ME! I'm the chick with Jesus around the neck, dancing to the music- and all the drug scene, night club crap is the temptation around my life- but then God taught me how to feel and His love took me to a whole other HIGHER level of living! Praise God! Clever guy that Bono! ;o)
Infact, I suspect all of u2s music are about me in some way or another- and I'm sure most people feel a personal relation to the songs they love.

This is simply an excellent track and proof that U2 can still ROCK. It drives along, without a second of wasted space. The lyrics seem confusing at first, but they all relate to a common theme: a wild, possibly drug-induced night at a dance club, called Vertigo. However, I think the lyrics have a darker undercurrent, as the narrator seems to be trying to escape from something (relationship troubles, perhaps?) in his real life, drowning out all the pain with drugs and alcohol. In short, the narrator is trying as best he could to have the most fun he could, but just cannot because of his thinking (about the significant other, perhaps?).

Also, the "unos, dos, tres, catorce!" line that has been maligned by some and generated a laugh from others was described perfectly by Bono: "There may have been some alcohol involved." There you go!

Much respect to you Vertigos_Desire. And chumscrubber, you can burn in hell. No one cares.

Vertigo isn't the best U2 song but it isn't half bad. The meaning's already been explained so i wouldn't put forward my thoughts.

I think that in the beginning of the song, Bono is singing about the growing tensions between hispanics and the american public. It's a great song nonetheless.

Also, the "One two three fourteen" is probably that way for a reason. Bono can speak like...what, three different languages or something like that? I can't remember how many. Perhaps Spanish is one of them? I don't know...I think were all a bit confused on the 12314 thing but eh, I could care less. lol.

Ok, let me try to put this in a way so that it doesn't sound...like I'm a bitch.

First off, for those of you who are not U2 fans, why come in and insult the band. It's not like us U2 fans go to your favorite band areas and bash on them and their lead singers. So lets have a bit of respect and compassion for those of us who enjoy this bands music.

Second off, to get the silly non-sense stuff out of the way, Bono wears sunglasses for a look and because he is sensitive to light and his eyes swell up if he is around too much light. I know the feeling, I have the same problem with being sensitive to light and its not something I can tolerate very well. And the Edge wears a hat because he is bald and shy about it. If I was bald, I too would wear hats. lol.

Third off, lets get the "Bono is a hypocritical asshole" thing out of the way. Bono is just like the rest of us. He works for a living, even if his job is a bit more enjoyable than the rest of ours. He still works, has a family to provide for and he has earned his money well. It's not like he's going to abandon his family because certain people thinks he makes too much money and doesn't spend it all on charity. The bottom line is, he does spend his money on charity. He and his wife went to Africa by themselves at one point, without the press knowing, without telling anyone to go and live like the Africans do. I don't know too many people who would go and do something like that. In his ONE campaign, he says himself, "We are not asking for your money, we are asking for your voice." So, unlike our government, he is asking for our support, our voice, our freedom of organization, not money. If we want to spend money to help other countries, there is the (RED) product which half of the proceeds go to medicate those in Africa and the other half to help make the products. This helps Africans get jobs so they can provide for their families. Bono does practice what he preaches and is not a hypocrite. Yes there are those who aren't famous or rich and do charity work, but he also works and still has time to give speeches and help Africa. I'm sure if he wasn't famous or rich, he would be doing the same thing to help Africa. He gets publicity because he is famous, not because he is trying to make his reputation better. Many do not like Bono and I think he understands that and doesn't give a shit.

Ok, now the last thing, the song itself. The song is about temptation, about the evil in this world and how we can be sucked into evil easily but in the end, we have to realize that material isn't everything, but knowing who you are, and having faith in God will help you realize the true things in life.

I know this is long and I am sorry. I am a big U2 fan and they helped me with so much in my life that I am free to my own opinion. Alas, I do respect those who have their own opinions, it is a free country, we are entitled to our first amendment so more power to you. Sorry if I myself sound very hypocritical, but I believe Bono has a big heart and has done something that probably a lot of us are scared to do.

I wish you peace. God Bless and be good to each other.

And also... the verse Bono adds on the live version at the end of the song; "There's a place I go... sometimes I won't let go, hello, hello," is the chorus to "Stories for boys" from "Boy"

It is definitely unos, dos, tres, catorce. 1, 2, 3, 14. I'm a native Spanish speaker. Even though 1 is not unos but uno, it doesn't really make a difference. Unos can't mean anything but 1 in Spanish. I'm sure Bono wanted to say uno but messed up. He is still a great singer. And yeah, donde esta? means where is it?

I love the line...' They know that they can't dance, at least, they know." Its a line referring to religious people who can't understand the concept of contemporary, relevant, funky Christians WHILE referring to their disastrous dance album at the same time. Classic!

Basically, i think this song is about the whole CCM controversy and crossover projects by artists such as Sun Ho, Lifehouse and Switchfoot, while secondarily about Bono's own withstanding of temptation in the face of a sex and drugs rock and roll culture. Check out the entire myriad of allures presented in the verse after the first chorus and guilt-inducing image of "Jesus
round her neck."

The temptation theme continues in the bridge, basically paraphrasing Satan's last temptation of Jesus in the desert. Interestingly, the studio vid for this part just before the last chorus" your love is teaching me how/to kneel" features the Edge throwing Bono off after this "tempting" to blast his guitar.

One more thing: Unos, Dos, Tres, Cartoce. 1, 2, 3, 14.

First Testament, second book, 3rd chapter, 14th verse.

That's the verse God announces Himself as I AM THAT I AM: Yahweh. Vertigo is the first song on the album.

The last song? A track titled Yahweh.

well I might be wrong about this but I think this song is about Gods love because of the refrence to kneeling and the refernce th jesus around a girls neck which is a cross necklace
