Lyrics for Hourglass as interpreted by jc6md

Hourglass Lyrics
Privileged, a chosen few
Blessed with our time in hell
Witness a divine vision, the day we all fell still
Rapture of the dying age, a shattered hourglass
Wrath of the warring gods and so this too shall pass
It's only getting worse, not worth a moment's regret
Each dawn another curse, every breath a twisting blade
What will be left behind in the ashes of the wake?

An ill wind blows this way, the edge of the envelope burns
Forbearance and my vengeance, payment for your intent
Fear and death in the wings, in thrall of those fallen from grace
Petty is as petty does, witness the mass disgrace

God forbid you read the signs, watch for meanings between the lines
Gehenna has now arrived, no hindsight for the blind
Your trust has been misplaced, believed the lies told to your face
Became another casualty and now it's too late

You finally made it home
Draped in the flag that you fell for
And so it goes
The ashes of the wake
It's only getting worse...

i think its about Dubya's little crusade in the middle east and how the american public has been manipulated by the govenment.

"Witness a divine vision, the day we all fell still
Rapture of the dying age, a shattered hourglass" - I believe is a refrence to 9/11. the catalyst or excuse for the invasion of Afganistan, Iraq and god knows where next.

"God forbid you read the signs, watch for meanings between the lines"
and
"no hindsight for the blind
Your trust has been misplaced, believed the lies told to your face"
this is the manipulation part. The public has been fooled into living in fear and therefore believeing all the lies fed to them by the govenment, and failing to read betwein the lines and see what the deal realy is.
and dieing for thoes lies
"You finally made it home, Draped in the flag that you fell for"

Definitly, Randy Blithe really really hates George Bush, which makes him even cooler as far as I am concerened.

It doesn't matter how much he hates him, its not going to change the war. What the hell should we have done over the 9/11 tradgedy? Nothing?

This song is about a soldier who goes to war and dies. Plain and simple. However, Randy believes that what the soldier was fighting for were lies instilled in him from some other source. (Most likey the Gvnt.)

slayerofpop, while I do believe that action was needed in order to bring Osama to justice, the actions of George Bush were totally insane.

Also, as toolapc said, this is simply about Randy's opinion, no one is telling you to agree with it, so I don't see what your problem is...

this song is also about religon...but also death...its about the rapture...hes talkign about the earth or life as "hell" and the ones cured of their blindness (christains) have been blesses with living with ease on this bitch of life...Gehhenna is when the blind or the unbeleivers in christ or god go to hell described as the blind men...talkign about how it only gets worse untill the end...the rapture...how god forbids u to just read the signs u see...but look deeper between the lines to see the real meaning...that the hourglass of life will come to an end...the unbeleivers go to heaven...the "blind" unbelivers go to hell...simple as that

Yeah, no shit. First off, we can tell you're retarded or residing in a rusted out trailor from your spelling and shit, ilikemetal. "Prey", "promices", "isent", you've gotta be kidding me. Second, holymetalhead is stating his fucking opinion, which is what this website is here for you ignorant douche. Oh yeah, Christianity doesn't "promice" death, it promises eternal life. So do everyone a favor and shut the fuck up, House on Wheels.

I have to disagree. I would venture to say this song is about the events immediately preceding 9/11 and the American response immediately after.

I think the beginning of the song is about 9/11...

"Privileged, a chosen few/Blessed with our time in hell"

- The terror cells tasked with carrying out the attacks, 'blessed' with a chance to bask in the glory that is a free democratic republic, of course, to Islamist scum, it's the "Great Satan"--surely a hellish modern-day Sodom.

The "shattered hourglass" is the Twin Towers.

"It's only getting worse, not worth a moment's regret/Each dawn another curse, every breath a twisting blade/What will be left behind in the ashes of the wake?"

- The collective agony the nation experienced in the aftermath of the cowardly attacks. The nation questions what are we going to do now in retribution?

"An ill wind blows this way, the edge of the envelope burns"

- The "ill wind blowing" is the greatest military force the face of the earth has ever seen, and the savages in Afghanistan (at "the edge of the envelope", in Central Asia, right outside of the Middle East) are about to feel what it's like to be on the wrong end of its wrath.

I could go on, but the best part is that change-up after the drum breakdown. The "ill wind" riff is fucken killer.

Just goes to show you don't have to have correct politics (or a rudimentary understanding of world affairs or even the basic ability to think logically) in order to make good music.

Ilikemetal: You are truely a moron. At least you are overt about it so we all know to just ignore you. Christian are no less close minded than anyone else and, for the most part, certainly less close minded than you.

As for this songs meaning: I think it probably was meant to be about Iraq. The whole album seems to be abou it in one way or another... I think most of the songs have a bit of double meaning though. I'm not sure if this one does.

On a sort of related note: I don't think too much of LOG's music is meant to convey a positive spiritual message. Here is a good metric for those of you thinking it might convey a Christian message. In any band's music if the songs contain one of these words then chances are the band is not made up of Christians: fuck, shit, cunt, goddamn. Now go back and read LOG's lyrics... Oh, some of those words appear in the lyrics... Now, research their old band name... Burn the Priest. How nice! Well, they sound like a Christian band to me!

That having been said, any band be it LOG or Marilyn Manson CAN in one or two songs convey a message that is approximately Christian. Most people aren't going to totally be against everything Christians stand for. Case in point the song Head Like a Hole by NiN. They aren't exactly a Christian band but the song just as well could be. Maybe the same thing w/ Omerta by LOG. Maybe Creeping Death by Metallica could be in that list too.

well the answer to me is obvious, it is about randy blithe's opininion regarding the war in iraq and the whole deal that's gone down in the middle east, but to me, a U.S. Navy Sailor, this song instills a sense of pride, both in myself, and those who serve along with me, they have the balls to go out and do things nobody else is willing to do, without knowing why or where, we just do as we're asked. the line, "you finally made it home, draped in the flag that you fell for," i realize nothing to me could be more beautiful, that if the worse should happen, i could have a burial worthy of an american serviceman. and despite the fact that "it's only getting worse" know that we're here and over there fighting only for you. not for bush, not for ourselves. for you.

To put an end to this arguement. Why don't you all just Shut the Fuck Up and post your interpretations of the song. If I wanted to Listen to you fucktards bitch and moan about your religious shit then I'd go back to high school.

Anyway, I agree with arkhaic in the interpretation of the first verse (and i also agree that the riff at "an ill wind" Totally kicks anyones ass.

I love the line "Petty is a petty does, Witness the mass disgrace." refering to the population believing george bush and his lies. The rest of the song kinda follows this, saying that soliders die for lies nowadays.

Awesome lyrics.

The entire album (Ashes of the Wake) is very political. So I assume that this song is about the War in Iraq.

But what does Ashes of the Wake mean?

It is mainly centralized around CRITICIZING religion. It does have some war references as well but that is mainly dealt with in "Now You've Got Something to Die For". I really thought this was seriously the most obvious and I was seriously quaking in my boots when I read the responses to these. Especially "holymetal" what a fucking retard. This song BASHES the SHIT religion. I will go through it line by line.
Privileged, a chosen few - The few who decide to accept whatever religion so they think they're privileged to get into heaven while the heathens burn.
Blessed with our time in hell - This can go two ways. You can say that the religious people are causing hell by not doing anything about it or they're in sort of a pseudo sort of naive fulfillment from their religion (which I completely protest, being of nondenominational faith in cosmic significance myself)
Witness a divine vision, the day we all fell still - This COULD be 9/11 but I think it is more about Easter
Rapture of the dying age, a shattered hourglass - Basically saying we're all getting fucked in the ass and the end is pretty much here and the religious people are thinking that Jesus is gonna come save them because the end times are near (see http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/story/11123162/kurt_vonnegut_says_this_is_the_end_of_the_world/)
Wrath of the warring gods and so this too shall pass - Religious wars
What will be left behind in the ashes of the wake? - Wake can be defined as "to become cognizant or aware of something; awaken; waken: to wake to the true situation." So, by the time people realize that governments are fucking us and religion is pointless, it'll be answered (and this question is answered quite disturbingly in "Blood of the Scribe"
An ill wind blows this way, the edge of the envelope burns
Forbearance and my vengeance, payment for your intent - Randy wants to go nuts on people but refrains because he is angry and wants us to all to see the ends (kinda psycho)
Fear and death in the wings, in thrall of those fallen from grace - The illusion of angels in the form of priests I'm guessing. Hence, fallen from "grace"
Petty is as petty does, witness the mass disgrace - Your faith doesn't define you as a person, your actions of lack of does.

Gehenna has now arrived - Hell is on Earth right now. It ain't some sort of mystical place underground with fire.
no hindsight for the blind - no person of some crazy religion researches the actual history of their religion. IE CHRISTIANITY DID NOT GET STARTED BY JESUS CHRIST. YOU ARE BEING LIED TO

You finally made it home
Draped in the flag that you fell for
And so it goes
The ashes of the wake
It's only getting worse... - Time to transition into Now You've Got Something to Die For. holymetalhead69, either you're a troll or just plain retarded. Lamb of God used to be called "Burn the Priest" by the way. Check our their stuff. It's pretty sweet. jackass
