I got a story it's almost finished
All I need is someone to tell it too
Maybe, that's you.

Our time is borrowed and spent to freely
Every minute I have needs to be made up
But how?
I'm looking for a nice way to say
"I'm out."
I want out.

I fall asleep with my friends around me
Only place I know, I feel safe
I'm gonna call this home

The open road is still miles away
Ain't nothing serious
We still have our fun
Oh we had it once

But windows open and close
That's just how it goes

Don't it feel like sunshine afterall
The world we love forever, gone
We're only just as happy
As everyone else seems to think we are

I'm in love with the ordinary
I need a simple space
To rest my head
And everything gets clear
Well I'm a little ashamed for asking
But just a little helps
It gets me straight again
Helps me get over it

It might seem like a dream
But it's real to me

Don't it feel like sunshine afterall
The world we love forever, gone
We're only just as happy
As everyone else seems to think we are

You should see the canals are freezing
You should see me high
You should just be here
Be with me here
It doesn't seem there's hope for me
I let you down
But I won't give in now
Not for any amount

General Comment:Wow. Reading the replies to this song put a whole new spin on it for me. I never thought it was about drugs, but I'm not sure.

I actually think it's about a friend or lover's death, possibly by suicide.

"Our time is borrowed and spent too freely"
You take your own, and others', lives for granted.

"But windows open and close // that's just how it goes"
    Basically? Sheet happens.

And this especially makes me think death:
"Don't it feel like sunshine after all?//
The world we love, forever gone"

This makes me think it's suicide:
"We're only just as happy // as everyone else seems think we are"

"You should see, the canals are freezing// You should see me high // You should just be here // be with me here"
Which seems to be reminiscing and wishing he could share it with someone. I don't think when he says "high" that he means on a trip, I think he means happy and content.

"It doesn't seem there's hope for me // I've let you down"
Maybe he couldn't convince the person not to commit suicide?

"But I won't give in now, not for any amount"
He won't give up, just because he 'failed' the person, and just because he misses said person.

It doesn't have to be a lover - it could be a close friend or a family member.

General Comment:this song is pretty simple to understand. a guy and a girl are in a relationship, in which they've both been for a while, and now it's losing its love. the "i got a story it's almost finished" is their relationship, which is falling apart. he's wasting his time trying to figure out how to end it with her, so he's gotta do it soon, he knows. the chorus is him describing how they both know the love is lost.

as for the snippets of their relationship being the various verses, i could potentially see that in the last verse ("canals are freezing... you should just be here..."). but i think it could also just be him admitting that he isn't FULLY over her, and that he did actually love her at one point, and that a little part of him will always love her, even as they go their separate ways.

General Comment:it doesn't matter as much as what the song is really about, but what it means to other people. the best part about this song is that tons of different people can relate it to at least one thing in their lives.

General Comment:this song was initially entitled "Suicide." whether it was a fan-based name or otherwise, i don't know. try hunting down their Pomona show from 2003 on the net, it's got some of the best versions of the Futures songs. i personally don't like how the Futures album came out..i'm used to appreciating their demo tapes more...way more raw and energetic.

General Comment:I just remembered, I said to my friend at the time, "Do you ever wish you could turn back time?" and she said, "Do you ever wish you could make time stand still?" This and Work are kinda our songs.

General Comment:When did I write that last comment? Well about a week later I went to the park with one of my best friends and we were completely alone. She wrote our initials on the bench with the word "world" after them and I put this song on and broke down crying in her arms. I confessed to her that I didn't want to go to Uni because I had such a good life in my hometown with my friends. Two weeks after that I'm completely on my own 100 miles away and it still hurts.

General Comment:I couldn't have put it any better than RazorandTie, I just finished school and me and all my friends are going to University soon. I've basically been listening to this and Lostprophets' Last Summer all summer because they have the same sort of message behind them. Or at least that's what I think.

"I fall asleep with my friends around me", yep, done that a few times.

"Don't it feel like sunshine afterall? The world we loved forever gone. We're only just as happy as everyone else seems to think we are" makes me feel at one with the world.

General Comment:my favorite part of this song is when he says...
    ---
i'm looking for a nice way to say
    "i'm out"
    I want out
    ---

    Great song...

General Comment:I absolutely adore this song. I always thought that it was about like... being depressed... and time just keeps moving on... but seeing the light in missed opportunities and really connecting with a group of people (friends)... but maybe that's an empty kind of happiness, too. I don't know. It seems positive, upbeat, but rather hollow.

General Comment:I think ths song is about graduting. I just graduated this year and this CD, felt like every song was hitting home.

Here is how i defend my stance:

    "i got a story it's almost finished"
school is coming to an end

    "but windows open and close
    thats just how it goes"
what i think he means by this is that time old saying when one door closes another opens; and what is the ultimate definition of this? a high school graduation, whe one chapter of your life ends another will open

"dont it feel like sunshine afterall
the world we love forever, gone"
hes scared that hes going out into the world but he knows its to brighter days

"you should the canals are freezing
    you should see me high
    you should just be here
    be with me here"
(god, thats my favoite part); anyway, its like he wants his friends, maybe girlfried, to be with him evry step of the way but he knows theyre all going off in different directions

anyway, the best thing about jimmy eat world is they wrte songs that can mean s much to people for different things
they recently passed brand new as my favorite band
