I'm timeless like a broken watch
I make money like Fred Astaire
I see that you've come to resist me
I'm a pitbull in time
The pretense is not what restricts me
It's the circles inside
The anatomy of kisses and a teacher who tries
Who knows how we'll disappear?
Would you like to be my Misses and in future with child?
You know we can't get back from here
But we can get away
Baby don't you try to find me
Baby don't you try to fight
Baby don't you try to find me
Lady it will be alright
Along the way
Tears drown in the wake of delight
There's nothing like this built today
You'll never see a finer ship in your life
We sail today
Tears drown in the wake of delight
There's nothing like this built today
You'll never see a finer ship or receive a better tip in your life
I am the scavenger between the sheets of union
Lately I can't tell for sure whether machines turn anyone
(The anatomy of kisses and a teacher who tries...would you like to be my Misses and in future with child...)
Baby don't you try to find me
Lady there is no need to fight
Lady don't you try to find me
Baby it will be alright
We sail today
Tears will drown in the wake of delight
There's nothing like this built today
You'll never see a finer ship in your life
Along the way
The sea will crowd us with lovers at night
There's nothing like this built today
You'll never see a finer ship or receive a better tip in your life
I see that you've come to resist me
I'm a pitbull in time
White goddess, red goddess, black temptress of the sea
You treat me right
Black goddess, red goddess, white temptress of the sea
You treat me right
White goddess, black goddess, red temptress of the sea
You treat me right
(Oh my love, we are sailing to Norway

"I am the scavenger between the sheets of union"
I interpret this as he often falls for/gets with ("scavenges") girls that are already with someone ("in union").
At the start he is smooth and easy going "timeless" but in time he gets more frustrated and agressive "I'm a pitbull in time"
I feel like its about a man who is in a secret relationship with his professor (I feel like the professor is married), and she knows it's wrong so she tries and resists him. At the same time, he is another relationship with someone who he has fallen out of love with and thinks about his professor while with her. In the end, all he thinks about is his professor and he wants her to sail with him somewhere far away so they don't have to feel guilty anymore and finally enjoy each other without regret. Some lines that lead me to this interpretation:
I see that you've come to resist me
I'm a pitbull in time
She has come to resist him because she feels guilty for being with him. He's aggressive in trying to make the relationship work.
The anatomy of kisses and a teacher who tries
Who knows how we'll disappear?
Would you like to be my Misses and in future with child?
You know we can't get back from here
But we can get away
This is what leads me to believe he is in a secret relationship with his professor. Instead of teaching him information in the classroom, she shows him her kisses and love. He fantasizes how they will leave and be happy together, finally feeling guiltless. He also fantasizes about being together married and with children. They both know they can't have that where they are at, so the ultimate solution is to get away.
Baby don't you try to find me
Baby don't you try to fight
Baby don't you try to find me
Lady it will be alright
This is the professor talking to him, telling him to give up on me and stop fighting for the relationship, because it will never work. But he reassures her that everything will be alright.
Along the way
Tears drown in the wake of delight
There's nothing like this built today
You'll never see a finer ship in your life
We sail today
Tears drown in the wake of delight
There's nothing like this built today
You'll never see a finer ship or receive a better tip in your life
He's telling her that they will find ultimate bliss with each other if they leave. The ship could be a metaphor for their relationship, and it could also be meant literally; leaving on a ship and starting a new life.
I am the scavenger between the sheets of union
Lately I can't tell for sure whether machines turn anyone
(The anatomy of kisses and a teacher who tries...would you like to be my Misses and in future with child...)
When having sex with his other woman, he feels no connection or is not turned on by her. He feels like they are machines in the relationship that can't turn each other on. He is thinking about his secret relationship during sex and fantasizing about his professor.
I also feel like this verse be directed at his professor: Like Idliketo said, she could be married and hes is like a scavenger because he is making love to her on her husband's bed. Calling himself a scavenger is degrading because he feels guilty but cannot help himself (direct quote from idliketo).
White goddess, red goddess, black temptress of the sea
You treat me right
Black goddess, red goddess, white temptress of the sea
You treat me right
White goddess, black goddess, red temptress of the sea
You treat me right
(Oh my love, we are sailing to Norway)
This is his ultimate confession to her. He compares her to a goddess and that she makes him happy and treats him right (unlike his other woman). In the end, he is either still fantasizing about leaving with her to Norway, or she finally decides to be with him so they sail to Norway.
Pretty crazy and stupid, I know.
It's about a relationSHIP (har har!). This is about someone who idealizes women & creates these fantasy futures with them. He tries & possible succeeds in winning this woman over through flattery & aggressive pursuit because he is so sure they have something special. However, he cannot open up to her, and he resists her "finding" him, or seeing his true self. As a result, the song suggests there is no real connection between them (scavenger between the sheets of union), just a fantasy of sailing off into the sunset happily ever. He's put her on a pedestal (white goddess, etc) & has over-idealized their future, which is unlikely to ever turn out in reality.
I'm timeless like a broken watch - He's mocking himself. A broken watch is useless; he feels deficient in some way, but is still trying to seem impressive
I make money like Fred Astaire - Fred Astaire dances for his career; this is a metaphor for kissing up to get something you need, not money in this case, but admiration/love. He "does a dance for" or flatters women to get them to like them. He puts on an act, and he does what they want/expect to win them over.
I see that you've come to resist me
I'm a pitbull in time - She's not responding to his flattery, so he becomes like a pitbull, stubborn & aggressive in his approach now instead of charming
The pretense is not what restricts me
It's the circles inside - His act is not the problem, it's the fact that he doesn't quite know his true self behind it, so he's restricted by it because he can never drop it & open up to someone
The anatomy of kisses and a teacher who tries - You can't dissect love; anyone who is trying to make it into a science is trying too hard
Who knows how we'll disappear? - Who knows how this "relationship" will end, it's not predictable
Would you like to be my Misses and in future with child? - He sees a future with her, a dream of an ideal life
You know we can't get back from here - They can't have that future dream in their current situation
But we can get away - He dreams of getting away from his current life, and sees her in this future. It's a fantasy of running away with a person he's idealizing in the moment.
Baby don't you try to find me - He feels he cannot be truly understand
Baby don't you try to fight - He's telling her not to resist his love
Baby don't you try to find me
Lady it will be alright - He's reassuring her of their future together
Along the way
Tears drown in the wake of delight - He imagines they'll find true happiness together, drowning out past sadness
There's nothing like this built today
You'll never see a finer ship in your life - Their relationSHIP (hehe!) is special, not typical, it has a lot of promise to keep going for a long time, it's a unique & quality connection
We sail today - this image also reminds me of "sailing off into the sunset", the ultimate happy ending
Tears drown in the wake of delight
There's nothing like this built today
You'll never see a finer ship or receive a better tip in your life - the tip part is referring to the suggestion she go along with him on this journey in life, that it's got a lot of potential
I am the scavenger between the sheets of union - He's having trouble finding a real connection between them; the intimacy he imagined may not exist, as his feelings may have been based entirely on fantasy
Lately I can't tell for sure whether machines turn anyone - not sure what this means???
Are you the scavenger Between the sheets of union? - now he's wondering if she's idealized him also & doesn't really know him, so that she too is trying to find what actually unites them
Lately I can't tell for sure whether machines turn anyone
White goddess, red goddess, black temptress of the sea - he's putting her on a pedestal
You treat me right - he's happy with her
Oh my love, we are sailing to Norway - he imagines their relationSHIP sailing into some faraway place; it's expressing a desire for a new life, making this girl a part of a running away fantasy to something better
He's unsettled, maybe even irritated. Sad definitively.
Ready to attack('like a pit bull')
Tired of the circles in life.
He's presenting his solution to himself and to the temptress(beautiful?) 'cocktail waitress' he's talking to. Sailing. Leaving the place. He's bribing her with his money ('better tip in your life').
He's promising a better life.
Scavenging for true love maybe?
The lady is saying no. She wont leave.
I bet he was drunk.
I think he constantly mentions the ocean because it's so vast. I feel like he's sad and drowning in an angry sea.
Alrighty, so he starts immediately by saying that he's impatient and is pretty much extremely wealthy (showing he's a bit narcissistic). He goes on to say that even if she refuses his offer (probably money for sex) he's very aggressive and won't falter in his determination. He sort of confides in her when he says "The pretense is not what restricts me, it's the circles inside" because he's trying to say the reason he's not off being friendly with other wealthy people on the ship is because they have close bonds [or circles] that make it nearly impossible for someone with his bland personality to become a part of; btw when he says that pretense doesnt restrict him, he means that social status or wealth/fame isn't what's standing in his way of joining them, but his personality, which is probably alittle ugly. He then tries to smooth talk her by asking her if she'd be his "Missus" and "future with child" but she remains unimpressed. He makes the inference before that line that he doesn't believe in affection when he says "an anatomy of kisses" because he makes it seem like kissing is very unaffectionate and therefore reflects that he doesn't see reasonin showing sincerity to others, only sees kssing and sex as a materialistic thing to be analyzed and perfected (therfore the teacher). I totally agree when he says baby don't you try to find me that he's telling her there's no point in trying to reach his better judgement because his personality is honsetly just that rotten. Also, him telling her not to fight him is another sign that he refuses to give in to her refusals. He finally gets fed up and takes a more aggressive approach by singing I am the scavengar and telling her that he needs this now; he refuses to wait any longer. The chorus involving the ship is just him making small talk about how fantastic the ship is. At the end, when he's saying how the goddess treats him right, he's making a reference to the waittress, who's finally given it up, and how she makes him feel good.
So there's that :) Wow I wrote more than I wanted to...
He's a constant in her life and their feelings for each other and his drive to have her only intensifies with time. He doesn't really like that he's doing it, as he is internally conflicted. But he wants so bad for her to chose him and run away. He's suave and coy with her most of the time dancing around what they know they have between each other, never really saying it.
These are all the things he wants to say to her.
He wants to tell her that the pain and guilt will fade with the waves of joy they'll experience and that everything will be alright if she comes to him and leaves her life behind.
I see "scavenger between the sheets of union" like a crow, picking up on someone else's kill, a scavenger. The sheets of union referring to a sexual desire for this woman who is in a union with someone else (married). Calling himself a scavenger is degrading because he feels guilty but cannot help himself.
He wants her to come to him (We sail tonight) That their love, relationship and sex will be better than anything ever created (You'll never see a finer ship in your life). He knows she's trying to resist but he knows she wants him as badly as he wants her.
i think the line "would you like to be my misses and in future with child" shows just how much he loves, he wants to start a family with her, he feels complete with her... really melanchollic
