Lyrics for Wake Me Up When September Ends as interpreted by animated456

Wake Me Up When September Ends Lyrics
Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
wake me up when September ends

like my fathers come to pass
seven years has gone so fast
wake me up when September ends

here comes the rain again
falling from the stars
drenched in my pain again
becoming who we are

as my memory rests
but never forgets what I lost
wake me up when September ends

summer has come and passed
the innocent can never last
wake me up when September ends

ring out the bells again
like we did when spring began
wake me up when September ends

here comes the rain again
falling from the stars
drenched in my pain again
becoming who we are

as my memory rests
but never forgets what I lost
wake me up when September ends

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
wake me up when September ends

like my father's come to pass
twenty years has gone so fast
wake me up when September ends
wake me up when September ends
wake me up when September ends

yeah I heard it's about his dad's passing.
The song is really beautiful though. And in the *music video* when the girl and the guy are upset at each other cause the guy's going to the military, that gets me. It's heartwrenching cause they love each other so much and the girlfriend is really scared cause she doesn't want to be alone. And the guy just wanted her support.

Oh. It's good, really good.

2 things: 1)dark night, i agree with you fully about people who just like a band because the singer is hot, and 2) I saw the video when it first pemiered and i cryed the first time i saw it, great song, i also likeed it when they did it on story tellers on VH1 and took questions about the songs from the audience. 5 stars, 2 thumbs up.

The song reminds me of summer love, you feel like you're constantly dreaming, then it ends and you "wake up".

Just saw the video and now I understand the song more. I guess it's more about Sept. 11th than it seemed at first. Billy Joe Armstrong is HOTTTT! And in this song his voice is so soothing and electrifying. It sounds like he just got tired of screaming and now he's mellow.

The first time I heard about this song (it was on a radio countdown but wasn't played), I expected it to be another screaming political song criticizing the U.S. government, blaming them for the 9/11 bombings. However, when I actually heard the song, I found that it was not that kind of political song, but much more. I have four possible interpretations of this song:

On one level, this song is about Billie Joe's father, as he himself admitted. Also, as it is part of a "punk rock opera", it is part of the sad tale of St. Jimmy/JOS and Whatsername/Rebel. The third meaning of this song is in the video, which presumably you've all seen. It cannot really be found in the lyrics, but in the theme of the song itself. However, I have a fourth meaning: This song is also, to some extent, a tribute to the families of the victims of the 9/11 attacks, especially the children whose fathers perished in the said terrorist attacks. In a way, Billie Joe probably sympathizes with the poor, orphaned kids because he knows the feeling of losing a parent.

The song is so meaningful in that way... That's why I love it. Second favorite track to "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and moving up fast.

Question: Was it deliberate that this song is Track 11 of the album? Because if it is, then the most suitable interpretation would be the one about the attacks, even if Billie Joe says otherwise.

shiro - the video shows a couple who've been together and in love for all of their childhood - at the beginning he promises to never leave her. however as you can see when she buys his food he's short on cash, and so when his 18th birthday comes he joins up to the army "for us".... thus leaving her.

It is about St. Jimmy/JOS and Whatsername/Rebel characters to fit in with the American Idiot storyline. But it's also a deeply personal song for Billie, about his father's dying when Billie was only 10. It's a very sad song but easily one of the best on the CD.

Green Day is amazing. American Idiot was catchy but never one of my favorites. However Boulevard of Broken Dreams was stuck in my head for 7 months from the time I first heard it. I couldn't stop singing it! I belted out Holiday at the top of my lungs everyday after I first heard it, and now this song has become my ringtone. In short, I've had not just many Green Days, but perhaps a Green Year.

I think the song is about Billie Joe's father dying "like my fathers come to pass"
cause he did die in septmeber, when billie was 11. and then it says "seven years has gone so fast" and billie joe or green day/sweet children became famous or started recording when they were 18, 7 years after his fathers death.
But either way it's an amazing song!!

in the video when he says 'i did it for us', recall earlier on in the clip the couple go to buy food, and the guy doesnt have enough money so the girl pays. The guy has a definite look of defeat on his face in this scene. Later it shows him playing a army video game, which are now used as recruitment tools. There is also a scene of his birthday, the numbers on his cake show it is his 18th birthday. So he joined the army as a lot of nieve 18 year olds do thinking it will be an easy way to get money like in video games.

Billie Joe's dad died of cancer in September 1982. Hence "Wake Me Up when September Ends". It's a painful time for Billie Joe and he can't wait for September to pass.

From the album's story's point of view: Whatsername has just split with JoS (or st. jimmy as some of you have called him) and he is distraught at the loss of their relationship and can't forget about it. The "Like my father's come to pass" signals that JoS' father must've died earlier on in his life (as in the song "JoS" earlier on [track 2] says 'whilst the Moms and Brads are away - this signals that it isn't JoS' father that his mother is with but someone called Brad). Possibly Billie Joe wanted to make a part of JoS' life similar to his.

This is my interpretation of the song so it may or may not be true. One thing is for sure though - it is about Billie Joe's father as I've heard him say it.

Just to clarify, I am a Green Day fan (sorry couldn't resist)

I thought it was quite obvious that the September Ends was a reference to the way that the entire country seems unable to forget the 9/11 attacks. He's sayin that he wants to detach from all the bullshit or to 'go to sleep', and wants to be woken up when everybody's ready to let it lie. It may also tie in to personal pains that he feels related to the same month.

Just to clarify, I'm not a Green Day fan.
