Lyrics for Wake Me Up When September Ends as interpreted by animated456

Wake Me Up When September Ends Lyrics
Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
wake me up when September ends

like my fathers come to pass
seven years has gone so fast
wake me up when September ends

here comes the rain again
falling from the stars
drenched in my pain again
becoming who we are

as my memory rests
but never forgets what I lost
wake me up when September ends

summer has come and passed
the innocent can never last
wake me up when September ends

ring out the bells again
like we did when spring began
wake me up when September ends

here comes the rain again
falling from the stars
drenched in my pain again
becoming who we are

as my memory rests
but never forgets what I lost
wake me up when September ends

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
wake me up when September ends

like my father's come to pass
twenty years has gone so fast
wake me up when September ends
wake me up when September ends
wake me up when September ends

Just saw the video and now I understand the song more. I guess it's more about Sept. 11th than it seemed at first. Billy Joe Armstrong is HOTTTT! And in this song his voice is so soothing and electrifying. It sounds like he just got tired of screaming and now he's mellow.

The song reminds me of summer love, you feel like you're constantly dreaming, then it ends and you "wake up".

2 things: 1)dark night, i agree with you fully about people who just like a band because the singer is hot, and 2) I saw the video when it first pemiered and i cryed the first time i saw it, great song, i also likeed it when they did it on story tellers on VH1 and took questions about the songs from the audience. 5 stars, 2 thumbs up.

yeah I heard it's about his dad's passing.
The song is really beautiful though. And in the *music video* when the girl and the guy are upset at each other cause the guy's going to the military, that gets me. It's heartwrenching cause they love each other so much and the girlfriend is really scared cause she doesn't want to be alone. And the guy just wanted her support.

Oh. It's good, really good.

wow - everyone takes these songs so literally. As far as I can tell (from the video & lyrics), this song IS about Sept 11th. The whole album totally slams Bush and represents the fact that the world won't ever be the same since that date. Before he performed this song the other day, he again slammed everything Bush stands for, and I really think that this song is hope that one day we will ALL be able to live in a world without so much hate, and with leaders who will do good for everyone and not just for themselves. "Wake me up when September ends" -> and the world makes sense again. I am so GLAD I am Canadian!

I heard this song last night, and I'm not much a fan of Green Day's new stuff, but I fell in love with this song. It just.. struck a heart string. It's love, I think.. love that's gone dull, and life that's just, not working. Everything's angry and confused.. and you just want to stay in bed until everything's right again. Summer is happy times, good times of love and freedom... all that ends once fall comes, until September ends. Nobody keeps there innocence, nobody can be happy forever. And I'm sure we all at a point just want everything to be new and free and beautiful again. But we can't, and things go so fast. One day, it's all just so wow, and you start to see things in new lights... when September ends. Beautiful.

i agree w/ lil_reaper about the song being about something that you almost think is a nightmare and you just want to wake up from it....but you know that you cant. I heard the other day when i first saw this video that he wrote it after his father passed away. the video for this song is great.

In the video, when he's fighting in the war, I wonder what it says on the wall where there's Arabic writing. That would be pretty cool if it said Green Day or something. Does anyone here read Arabic?

on the clip to this song it shows the war in iraq so it could be about september 11 but i think it has a deeper meaning. there are so many reasons behind this song but i really belive that billie is mainly talking about how he just wants all the bad things to go and wake him up when it all ends.

Incarnate I think you are wrong about Green Day. They don't hate the government as a whole. What kind of idiot doesn't believe in government? They may not agree with certain aspects of it, but they still believe in government. And just because you criticize the government doesn't mean you can't be patriotic. If I choose to(which I won't) I could not vote a day in my life and still be damn proud to live here!

Enough of the rant...yeah September 11 is the obvious root for this song along with several other events like the death of his father. It's the death of idealism on several different levels. That is what makes this song so easy empathize with. It's a very sad concept, but it's reality. It's stating the obvious. Our morality begins to deteriorate the day we are born. GD can capture that or any emotion and it reminds us that we aren't the only ones that have things we have to deal with. That's why I love them.

Hmmm. I seem to be the only one who looks at the music video then has an opinion. I think that as well as it being about his dad, it has something to do about people you love leaving you. how many times have ur parents promised u they'd never leave you? and then to be so young and have a parent ripped away. i believe that its about loved ones leaving in general. that's why in the music video the guy leaves to go to the army. Great performance by Evan Rachel Wood by the way. I love her.

these lyrics are perhaps the worst thing i have ever seen:

here comes the rain again
falling from the stars
drenched in my pain again
becoming who we are

i mean, wtf is that. Even hardcore fans can't tell me this song is good lyrically.
