Lyrics for Wake Me Up When September Ends as interpreted by animated456

Wake Me Up When September Ends Lyrics
Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
wake me up when September ends

like my fathers come to pass
seven years has gone so fast
wake me up when September ends

here comes the rain again
falling from the stars
drenched in my pain again
becoming who we are

as my memory rests
but never forgets what I lost
wake me up when September ends

summer has come and passed
the innocent can never last
wake me up when September ends

ring out the bells again
like we did when spring began
wake me up when September ends

here comes the rain again
falling from the stars
drenched in my pain again
becoming who we are

as my memory rests
but never forgets what I lost
wake me up when September ends

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
wake me up when September ends

like my father's come to pass
twenty years has gone so fast
wake me up when September ends
wake me up when September ends
wake me up when September ends

I like the lyrics for this song. But, to be perfectly honest, I don't really like this song. The music gets on my nerves. As does the video, somehow. The video shouldn't irritate me, but it does.

But, I did have this song in my head almost all day, and it wasn't all bad. So...I have no idea what I think of this song. Helpful or what?

I think this song is about 9/11. The album is political so it would fit and the use of the month September and it being the 11th tarck on the album are a bit too coincidental. There are probably elements of his fathers death as well, ut the first time I heard it I though it was about 9/11.
The video is a lad going to war after a summer of love and having to grow up quickly. I think the line "wake me up when September ends" is talking about 9/11 and the aftermath of it, (the Iraq war, the bombing of Afganistan), and how Billie_Joe doesnt believe in it all.

it is kinda weird that the song is #11 on the disc (Sept.11?) and if you look in the liner notes, it is dated Sept 10. like it was the last day of innocence. However, i think it may just be a silent tribute and it could be about breaking up as well

gd, point, the vidoe is clearly about the aftermath of sept 11

i think this song is about 9/11 in song way as he could have said wake me up when janary ends or whatever if it was not related to it. Its also obvious because its number 11 on the album. Its also tied into the death of billy jo's father as well-in an interview billy jo said it was difficult to sing and therefore it must be due to the pain of losing his father. when i hear the song it reminds me of my grandmothers death which was in september. Not sure why he says 7 years has gone so fast i.e. his fathers death and but then 20 years at da end-n e suggestions?

i am in love with this song....i kno that the song is about his fathers death...but if you look at the first few lines...it reminds me of high school:

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last

^right after school ends your senior year...theres that one summer, and then you have to go out and get real responsibilities

here here smart chic... i agree... it may be about his fathers death... but they arent the onyl bits that remind me of school ending...

on top of what you mentioned....

i had my last day of shcool recently... after 7 years at the school... "7 years has gone so fast"

and of course... the very idea of "wake me up, when september ends"... in the UK at least... the academic year starts in september... but university tend to start at the end of september... after my exams all i really have to do is laze aroudn till the end of september...

personaly I think its about his dad dying. It kinda makes u thnk he dusnt want 2 live through the death of his dads death so he wants 2 sleep through it I dont know though. Although I do also think it has a lot 2 do with september the 11th but more 2 do with the death of his dad

i feel that its about the nights when you fall asleep after you've lost someone or something close to you and you feel that life wont be the same until the grief is finished. its the loss of innocence and about the night that you realise everything will somehow end

on the cd this is the *11th song, and it's called "wake me up when *september ends", september and 11, **Sept 11**, I think it's about Sept 11th, " Summer has come and passed The innocent can never last", I think they just wanted to skip sept and forget about the pain caused to thousands of innocent people, I'm not sure , but it's definity about someone or more than one someone dieing in sept
keep it up green day, great song one of my favorites on the cd

I'm continuing my review of American Idiot. First of all, I would like to say that I really enjoy American Idiot, and that I think it's a great album with very good song writing. So please don't take what I have to say next as hate.

What a bad single. It's boring. It's way too emotional. If you want something extremely emotional go for it. But I think it's a terrible choice for a single, and should have never been released and made into a video (over so many better choices).

Now, I'm pretty sure you think I hate this song. That's not true. I think this is very good as PART OF THE ALBUM. The song captures emotions very well.

The song is about the death of Billie Joe's father. His father died in September 1982. 7 years later, Bille Joe released 1000 Hours--His first EP under Green Day. This song is emotional, because it's about an emotional event in his life.

So why include it on this Album? Why include it right here? This song captures the sense of isolation and despair that happens to Jesus of Suburbia when Whatshername leaves. It's almost as if his world is crumbling around him. The music video (also overly emotional) uses a couple being broken up when the boyfriend desides to go to war. Whether it's war, the desolation of JOS losing Whatshername, or Billie Joe losing his father, this song deals with loss. The loss of a loved one, or the loss of the inocence, or the loss of the world around you.

Overall, it's not one of my favorite tracks on the album, but it fits perfectly just where it is, and it is perfect for that point in the album.

Was Billie Joe's dad killed in the 9/11 attacks? I never thought about that (I thought he died of natural causes or something), but reading these comments, it made me think of that.

I went to see Green Day on Saturday and they played this, it was so passionate and heartfelt I got a lump in my throat, and you could see by Billie Joe's face that it was a song close to his heart.
I love this song because my dad also died and I think it captures the feelings that come with death well. 'As my memory rest, but never forgets what I lost' is the best line for me, because you have to let your memory rest because you'd drive yourself insane otherwise, but you never forget what you lost and thats a tribute to what the person meant to you. A brilliant song.

Just a thought but do you think there could be some double entendre here? I think September may be metonomous for the start of the university year, as may be suggested by the line: "ring out the bells again."

first of all u have to realise that the song can have more than just one meaning. it may have been written about billie joes fathers death, bur because he finds it painful to remember, theyve interpreted it into other things such as sept 11th and maybe the start of the school year. and the reason that it says 7 years at the start of the song and 20 at the end is because hes trying to show how fast time can fly past first just 7 years but before he knew it, 20 years had passed.

This is, without a doubt, my favorite Green Day song... he's talking about his fathers death & it somehow fits in to the story of the album (the breakup between St. Jimmy & whatsername) Who cares, it can mean whatever the fuck you want it to...

Who's seen the video clip? I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with the TRUE meaning of the song (Billie Joe's father dying) but shows the personal effects of war, because the public are more likely to relate "September" to 9/11 rather than Billie's dad. It really shows Green Day's whopping budget.
