Lyrics for Wake Me Up When September Ends as interpreted by animated456

Wake Me Up When September Ends Lyrics
Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
wake me up when September ends

like my fathers come to pass
seven years has gone so fast
wake me up when September ends

here comes the rain again
falling from the stars
drenched in my pain again
becoming who we are

as my memory rests
but never forgets what I lost
wake me up when September ends

summer has come and passed
the innocent can never last
wake me up when September ends

ring out the bells again
like we did when spring began
wake me up when September ends

here comes the rain again
falling from the stars
drenched in my pain again
becoming who we are

as my memory rests
but never forgets what I lost
wake me up when September ends

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
wake me up when September ends

like my father's come to pass
twenty years has gone so fast
wake me up when September ends
wake me up when September ends
wake me up when September ends

i think this song is about the fact that his dad died like 7 years before he wrote this song "seven years has gone so fast " (i dnt no if he did but im guessin so ) and its talkin about how much billy-joes dad ment to him and how much he loved him but understands that it wasnt either of their faults i also think its for anyone who lost any on in the september 11th attacks and any one whos lost anyone in general, this is a very sweet and innocent song that should NOT have the piss taken out of it because its pure and beautiful its talking about his feelings which alot of people dont do (especially to the whole world) i think billy- joe is very brave to do this so rock on billy!!!! i hope u have a lifetime ov happiness!!!! =) *ding*

He is singing anout his dad passing away when he was 10, his father actually died in september , he has put in his lyrics 'as my memory rests, but never forgets what i lost' he is saying there that even though he has come to terms with what has happened , he will never forget about it.

I think it is a great song , even though it isn't traditional green day , it is still one of their best.

I think this song is about Sept. 11th, as it fits in with the whole george bush thing on the album. i think he relates this event to the death of innocent people - his dad for example 'seven years have goe so fast'. i think he has linked september 11th to the death of his dad, so the two tie in together. this is just my interpritation of the song, whether or not its true i dont know :P.

Also, i have heard a rumour (not sure if its true or not) that a film based on the album 'american idiot' is being made, and it would star the band!! so fingers crossed :P

random silhouette is right this song is surely about 9/11 it's just people not being able to comprehend what happened or why it's the aftershock of 9/11 that lasted till the end of semptember and even after and now people are still scared ...

it's obviously about his father's death, and i think what most ppl thought about the whole misery and heartache is true. i also think that it collaborates elements of september 11th in it. i agree with the whole 'date' factor. must be more than a coincidence, but that's just my opinion.
it's still a gr8 song!

This is about when Billie Joe's dad died, which i understand happened when he was really young. I Think maybe his dad died in september, and every year that goes by each september is just dreadful, making him feel like he just wants to sleep through it and not deal with the pain. First it's been seven years and then 20, and he just relalises that this happened such a long time ago Also I think since most of the songs on American Idoit have a political vibe to it, Wake Me Up When September Ends, might also have something to do with 9/11, and how much pain and suffering happened because of the world trade tower bombings.

I saw Storytellers Green Day and they explained this song, they said it was about his father's death. But I always thought it was about like sad moments in peoples lives and how they deal with them and stuff.

I don't want to sound like a wuss, but I CRIED when I heard this song for the first time. It's definitely got something to do with Billie Joe's father, I don't know why, but it has that vibe.
It's so bittersweet.

Apparently It'll be the next one officiallly released. Wonder what the clip's gonna look like?

"Twenty years has come to pass"
Billie Joe is 33. 20 years ago he was 13. His father died when he was 11. He probably wrote this song two to three years ago. It would work....

this is the winding down part of the album. st. jimmy is realizing nothing lasts for ever and so many things change and sometimes you have to heed the warning, if you don't then you become victim to ignorance. st. jimmy grows into the seasonal change. death and love make a combination of being a grown-up and child worth living together. st. jimmy embraces the change in his own way by keeping whatsername there for his good time and confidant. he realizes there's a brave world out there that's more than party and sex, but life lessons and finding who he is.

Ok, so I'm confused about several things. In the video, is the girl rachel evan wood? and also, has anyone else noticed that the boy looks a lot like jamie bell from billy elliot? Also, I get that he joined the army, and shes all like 'why did you do this to me' and hes all like 'i did this for us!'. How is it for them? What was he trying to achieve for their relationship? PLEASE EXPLAIN SOMEONE

i just watched the video of this song and wowwww it's seriously one of my favorites videos ever! green day really grew up and in a good way for sure! well and to answer to mkfanatic and why did he say "i did this for us" well i'm not sure though but by us he could mean us, like the US, the country but i must admit that would be weird with the video though... if someone can help us about it! :)

oh and by the way i forgot to say something ahah maybe i'm right cause he said to her "i think you would be proud of me" or something like that so by "us" he could have meant for the country and for the couple at the same time

this song 4 me is very special. it's probably not about it, but i think it's about growing up. i'm a teenager and summer last year i had no problems, now everything has piled on, things are happening everywhere, the friends i have are no longer innnocent. it's a sad song, but in a way it accepts the fact that nothing can last forever.

yes. i absolutely agree with massive mike. the lyrics tell about the dramatic change in ur life during adolescence, and the pain and struggle most go through. u have to grow up and accept the world. sounds easy, but accepting is something not everyone wants to do. excellent song, got me into greed day.

This song means alot to me. I first heard it the other day. It reminds me of a kid named Nathan that was a high school senior here. He died homecoming night in a tragic barn accident. Home coming was October first. So I always get a different feel of the meaning of this song.
