Lyrics for Wake Me Up When September Ends as interpreted by animated456

Wake Me Up When September Ends Lyrics
Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
wake me up when September ends

like my fathers come to pass
seven years has gone so fast
wake me up when September ends

here comes the rain again
falling from the stars
drenched in my pain again
becoming who we are

as my memory rests
but never forgets what I lost
wake me up when September ends

summer has come and passed
the innocent can never last
wake me up when September ends

ring out the bells again
like we did when spring began
wake me up when September ends

here comes the rain again
falling from the stars
drenched in my pain again
becoming who we are

as my memory rests
but never forgets what I lost
wake me up when September ends

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
wake me up when September ends

like my father's come to pass
twenty years has gone so fast
wake me up when September ends
wake me up when September ends
wake me up when September ends

I love the seasonal aspect that's peppered into the lyrics and how it parallels the relationship with his father (or whomever one has lost). Summer (the good time) has come and passed. In the fall, (September), things die out, it rains, it sucks. You long for the time when things were fresh and new, (when spring began), or in the case of the paternal relationship, his childhood. What a wonderful, horrible, sad fucking tune...I can't get enough of it.

When I heard "7 years has gone so fast" I thought of like people have 7 years of bad luck, and they sleep through it or something...thats just my opinion. And his dad died 22 years ago and he probabily wrote this song 2 years ago when it was 20 years exactly.

Billie said in an interview that this song is about his father's death, and I've got no reason to disbelieve him. The song was written in 2003 so the "20 years" makes sense because BJ was 10 when his dad died. The "seven years" is a mystery and one I bet BJ keeps that way. He's very open about his feelings but often tight-lipped on the factual details.

I love this song...Green Day has a way of writing songs that get to your heart and make you break down. This may be one of the saddest songs released last year. It makes you think that the writer has suffered intently in his life. The 'seven-year' reference might mean that Billie Joe had finally been able to actually understand what happened to his father, he could have also lost someone close to him at 17. Either way it is looked at, I love this song and I would like to see it released as a single. American Idiot is a great album...I hope they make this album into a movie.

i cried the first time i heard this song, it was amazing how much i can relate to it....my dad just died (unexpectedly and fairly young at 45) last August, so it hit me pretty hard the first listen.

I only wish i could write something as moving as this. "The Innocent will never last", "as my memory rests, but never forgets what I lost" all those lines....i still cry sometimes when listening

people, seriously, don't take time with your father's for granted, cause you'll miss it terribly when it isn't there.

WeezDay I completely agree with you. You think they'll be there forever and then suddenly they're gone. My Mom lost her dad in 1999, and at that point I thought a little bit about it, but not much. Little did I know that within 5 years I'd be going through the same thing. They've said it before, and it may sound corny, but when you have the opportunity to tell those close to you that you love them -- say it!! There will come a day when it's too late.

I think (I'm not sure) that it's about his father's death. That is kind of obvious. I also heard that the
"like my fathers come to pass
seven years has gone so fast " is that he is worried because his oldest son was seven when he wrote it, and he was 10 when his father died... if you get the idea.

I read somewhere that Billie Joe wrote this about his father when he died. If you read the lyrics they make sense to that. Its one of the better songs on the album. Billie Joe is an amazing song writer, and the whole band together clicks really well. I love their high energy songs, but their slower songs rock all the same.

The song, by lead singer, Billie Joe, is about the death of his father when Billie Joe was 10 years old. It begins with a lone singer plucking out chord progressions on an accoustic guitar. It is very moving and it does make me think of my father's death last year, but I personally take the metaphor of this song as being about September 11. That event like the election(s) and every decision that has been made by the bush administration have made me feel more and more like crawling into bed and waiting until it's all over.

I remember waking up that morning to the news that the towers had fallen. I still hope that it is really September 10, 2001 and soon I will awaken to learn that it was all a horrible dream--that my country is really a wonderful haven of freedom, as I was taught, and that this awful awakening was just a dream.

On September 11, 2001 I awoke to the awful realization that what I always thought my country stood for was a lie, and that these crimes against humanity being committed all over the world are partly in my name. Each bomb and every bullet belongs in part to me.

That's what makes a good song like this one great. It's about Billie Joe's grief (like he says). It's about St. Jimmy and Haushinka. And it's about September 11. It's about every really bad thing that makes us feel like hiding in bed.

When i first heard this song, i thought it was just another nice green day song, but after reading these posts i realise that it may be a silent tribute to his father and september 11. Billie Joe must be one of the best songwriters in the world to be able to put the 2 together and produce such an excellent song. It all ties together looking at the dates his father died, and the 20 years has gone so fast, and all the other time references. It makes sense. This is an amazing song where billie joe's talent can't be denied.

I was searching for some help in finding the meaning of the album "American Idiot." Billie had said that the album was a story, each song a significant part of that story. Well, on my own I was able to understand bits and pieces of the story but the whole thing was still escaping me.

This website has what I believe to be the best interpretation of the story that Billie, Tre, and Mike based "American Idiot" on.

I adore this song, one of my favorites from Green Days newest album.
I totally can relate to the feeling that is being conveyed in this song. Of wishing you could just sleep the whole month away, b/c facing the reality seems like its just too much.

"drenched in my pain again
becoming who we are " That part kick ass, one of my favorite lines. I guess I just like the way they used powerful words, deffinitly grabs your attention when your listening to it.
I think it also is sort of showing that through the pain you grow. become who you are.

I saw Green Day live about a week ago, and Billy Joe said 'this song goes out to Joey Ramone' - not sure if there is any connection in the meaning, though

Hey "myalias" you're 19 and you're barely losing your innocence? It's sad that your dad died and all but come one, one has lost their innocence before they were 19.

This song has two meanings. First is the loss of St. Jimmy's "girlfriend"/parter in crime Whatsername. :) But Billie Joe's true meaning for this song is; Billie's father died when he was young and this song basically tells us about the feelings he went through as he tried to get over his father's death. Unfortunately he hasn't. This is also the first song Billie Joe wrote about him and his father's relationship , if thats what you want to call it. :\
