Wake Me Up When September Ends Lyrics
Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
wake me up when September ends

like my fathers come to pass
seven years has gone so fast
wake me up when September ends

here comes the rain again
falling from the stars
drenched in my pain again
becoming who we are

as my memory rests
but never forgets what I lost
wake me up when September ends

summer has come and passed
the innocent can never last
wake me up when September ends

ring out the bells again
like we did when spring began
wake me up when September ends

here comes the rain again
falling from the stars
drenched in my pain again
becoming who we are

as my memory rests
but never forgets what I lost
wake me up when September ends

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
wake me up when September ends

like my father's come to pass
twenty years has gone so fast
wake me up when September ends
wake me up when September ends
wake me up when September ends

Yes, it's about his father's passing. However, at the concerts, he dedicated it to Johnny Ramone.

i get it being about his dad dieing... but anyone notice that it says, "like my father come to pass, 7years has gone so fast" than says, "like my father come to pass, 20 years has gone so fast"..

20+7 is 27, and he has a tattoo on his right arm that says 27, with a circle around it..... i was just wondering if anyone knew if there was a signifigance?

God, I love this song. I always thought it was more about a death of innocense, but it makes sense being about his dad. Deliberator's right about them dedicating it to Johnny Ramone. I was at Green Day concert last week and that's what they did.

Alright, just because the song has September in the title doesn't mean it's automatically about 9-11. The political aspects of the CD criticize the lack of intelligence in our "great" nation. It doesn't have to do with 9-11. I guess anyone can interpret it any way they want, but with the line "Like my father's come to pass", it kinda seals the whole "it's about his dad dying" theory. There aren't any subtle references to 9-11 anywhere. When your dad dies while you're still young, that's a loss of innocence. The man you idolized and looked up to is no longer in your life. That's enough to destroy anyone's innocence. Everything else said in the song sounds pretty much in direct reference to Billie, rather than people who lost family in 9-11.

That's a good idea, I never really thought of that. I remember him saying on a Howard Stern interview that one of his tattoos was some band's symbol thing, and I always assumed it was that one, but you may be right.

The 27 w/ a circle is a band, although I can't remember the band's name anymore. I saw them with Green Day in '94. I guess you could look and see who they toured with in '94.

I think it is about life, and how the things we love come to pass, nothing can last forever. Things happen, people change, life goes on another day.

AHHH! I've been WAITING for this opportunity!

Has anybody noticed all the little tie-ins in American Idiot (the album, not just the song)?

1) Wake Me Up When September Ends
a) Sept. 10... that's all too obvious
b) "7 years has gone so fast" 7 years after Billie Joe's father died is when Green Day's first EP was released
c) "20 years has gone so fast" 20 years after his father died is when American Idiot was released

2) Whatsername -
a) Am I the only one that noticed that the name that is scribbled out is "Haushinka"?

Just thought I'd get that off my chest... if anyone else has already pointed those out... sorry.

wow... weird... i had no idea.... ( lots of dots!....) hmmm... platypus, you are extremely observant (much more than me)! it makes me sad to listen to this song, rather than Whatsername... have you noticed that the only songs that don't tie in with the rest of the record are american idiot, boulevard of broken dreams, and holiday? do you think that holiday will be the next single? I think that that track or wake me up when september ends....

Holiday IS Green Day's next single. Plus Boulevard of broken dreams is a metaphor (sorry, i'm just typing what my friend is telling me too, don't understand the metaphor either)

Wake me up when September comes is like a sequel song to Good Riddance. Since Good Riddance was about the time of your life ending, this song is about the depression that washes over you when you really realize the good times are gone. It can be related to lots of things, but in the story of this cd i think it's about when St. Jimmy/Jesus of Suburbia (same person) have been broken up with Whatsername in Letterbomb (Whatshername's breakup letter to Jesus of Suburbia) and now the depression of how it's over has settled over him. At the same time, it's about Billie's dad too.

I first heard this song shortly after my dad died. That was three months ago, in September of 2004, from cancer. I'm 19 and my parents have remained my main source of comfort and security. Now that my Dad's gone, I feel like I'm being forced to leave my childhood -- like my innocence is being lost. During the funeral and for these past months I've simultaneously felt so numb and at times like all I want to do is fall asleep until it's all over. Until my Mom is happy again... until I am happy again. Thus this song has had much meaning to me during this time. Though I didn't know what it was *actually* about, this is what I always thought about when I listened to it.
Tonight I looked up its actual meaning, and I got goosebumps. I guess that's a big reason why the song seems so fitting... Though without this strong identifying factor I know I would love this song anyway, now I feel like, at least for now, this piece is my themesong.
