Lyrics for Wake Me Up When September Ends as interpreted by animated456

Wake Me Up When September Ends Lyrics
Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
wake me up when September ends

like my fathers come to pass
seven years has gone so fast
wake me up when September ends

here comes the rain again
falling from the stars
drenched in my pain again
becoming who we are

as my memory rests
but never forgets what I lost
wake me up when September ends

summer has come and passed
the innocent can never last
wake me up when September ends

ring out the bells again
like we did when spring began
wake me up when September ends

here comes the rain again
falling from the stars
drenched in my pain again
becoming who we are

as my memory rests
but never forgets what I lost
wake me up when September ends

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
wake me up when September ends

like my father's come to pass
twenty years has gone so fast
wake me up when September ends
wake me up when September ends
wake me up when September ends

On September 11th (9/11), we were talking about songs inspired by that day and someone in my class told us that this song was about it. I don't know how except for the Sept. part but oh well. good song!

The journey, is finally over... I can finally rest. The road was long and hard and I have overcome many obstacles... I am stronger and I the things I've done and seen has changed me into a better person. ...I am at peace... I feel relieved.

This is what this song makes me think about. This is what I think it means. Whether in a symbolic sense or a metaphoric sense, I don't know, but this is how I've interpreted it.

This is my thoughts about the song:

1. "September" represents some sort of a "memory" which hurts him every time he remembers. Waking up from it means moving on so as not to feel those sad feelings.

2. I believe the song is also a tribute to the 9/11 incident because of the lyrics "Here comes the rain again, falling from the stars". The american flag do have stars, right? And we all know it represents the states. And rain from those stars represents the tears from those states because of the bombing.

When I saw the video, my first impression was that the main character killed his father so that he and his girlfriend could be together, thats why she was so upset. He was then shipped off to the military

I see it as not only a commemoration to his father, but also the attack on the Twin Towers [[9/11.]]

The whole 9/11 thing that one of you mentioned is completely irrelevent. People are looking for things that don't exist; circumstances that only happen to share similarities. It is not intentional.

I think its about both his dad and sept 11th, the lyrics make plenty of sense for both. The video is about someone going away to war, so it kind of connects with the whole sept 11th thing, but I've heard many places that its about his dad, so like I said before, I personally think its about both

It makes sense that it is about his father. Billy is 37, and his dad died when he was 10, which was on september 10. Billy wrote the song seven years after his dad died hence the line " seven years has gone so fast". Later in the song, he says "twenty years has gone so fast". 10 plus 7 plus 20 is thirty-seven, wich I will remind you, is Billy's current age. It would also make sense that he wishes he could sleep through September, because perhaps he is reminded of his father in september, wich would probably be kinda depressing. PS September is at the end of Summer "Summer has come and passed", so at the end of summer, he is "drenched in his pain again".

This song is so special to me for a specific reason:
My grandma passed away on the 1st of October, and we knew she was going to pass away for a while so we could say our goodbyes and stuff.
And on that morning my mother woke me up with the news that she was gone, and later on that day I heard this song on the radio and cried!
Great song!

I recently watched an interview with Billy Joe Armstrong (Green Day's lead singer), and this song is a tribute to his late father, who died September 19th. Or 18th. I forget... but it is NOT a tribute to 9/11. Good guess, though.

i'm not going to read 14 pages of comments so if repeating i apologize.

anyways this song was originally written bout billie's dad who died in sept. but it also fit in with the st.jimmy and whatshername story line especially the emotions and thoughts of both characters after the events in letterbomb.

could it be that he misses his dad and "the innocent can never last" is talking about himself who was left behind since that September raining day. Though time possibly reduced some pain but he will never forget the pain of losing his dad, that's why he doesn't want to be awake in September. That's my feeling about this song, it's brilliant and I love it. : )

God, I love this song...it never fails to make me cry when I hear it.
Anyway, to me this song is about loss, not necessarily loss of a family member, but just losing anyone or anything that meant the world to you. At first you just go through your life and you think that whatever the thing is will last forever, but your "innocence can never last" and eventually it will all just be a memory. And you learn to just block it all out, but it's always there, in the back of your mind. Your "memory rests but never forgets what you lost". It's also about the passing of time, how you can look back on the experience years later and still have it fresh in your mind, and you wish you could just curl up and go to sleep until you didn't have to think about it anymore. I think almost everyone in the world can relate to this song in some way, I know I can. This song will definitely always be one of my favorites
