Lyrics for Wake Me Up When September Ends as interpreted by animated456

Wake Me Up When September Ends Lyrics
Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
wake me up when September ends

like my fathers come to pass
seven years has gone so fast
wake me up when September ends

here comes the rain again
falling from the stars
drenched in my pain again
becoming who we are

as my memory rests
but never forgets what I lost
wake me up when September ends

summer has come and passed
the innocent can never last
wake me up when September ends

ring out the bells again
like we did when spring began
wake me up when September ends

here comes the rain again
falling from the stars
drenched in my pain again
becoming who we are

as my memory rests
but never forgets what I lost
wake me up when September ends

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
wake me up when September ends

like my father's come to pass
twenty years has gone so fast
wake me up when September ends
wake me up when September ends
wake me up when September ends

I *think* it's about St. Jimmy and Whatsername breaking up.

it is kinda weird that the song is #11 on the disc (Sept.11?) and if you look in the liner notes, it is dated Sept 10. like it was the last day of innocence. However, i think it may just be a silent tribute and it could be about breaking up as well

The whole CD is a concept album, a "punk rock opera," with characters like St. Jimmy, Jesus of Suburbia, and Whatsername. As for meaning... I don't know... the whole CD kinda seems like the death of idealism and rebellion...I haven't worked it all out yet either, though

It's about Billie's father's death, but I'm sure that he wrote it so that it tries in with the story of St. Jimmy.

This was the first song that Billie Joe has ever written about the death of his dad, which happened when he was...10? I'm not sure. And I think his dad died in september and so mabye he just hates that time of year because it reminds him of it...and every year he wishes he could just sleep all the way through september to avoid thinking about it. I don't know really, just and opinion.

Good interpretation on the date, September 10th: the last day of innocence. I like it. I like it a lot.

Billie-Joe said himself this song was the first he wrote about his father's death, but I think it's that and a whole lot more. To me it's about the realization of inevitably losing everything you care about, and so in that way it also is the heartache over Whatsername (who breaks up with him in Letterbomb).

It's a realization that can depress you enough to make you want to sleep for an entire month.

i think this song means that hes sick of the shit he got in september.......with his dad dying and everything.....and that he just wants to sleep through the whole thing so he can escape the memories

im not sure if thats rite but its a good song anyways

This song makes me think about how we take our relationships with people for granted. And once they're gone, the memories seem so bittersweet.

This song makes me want to cry. It's so simple, but it says so much. Aghh. I love it!

This song is so beautiful. I've never heard anything about it being about his dad's death, however looking over at the lyrics, it makes sense. Tragidy can produce amazing music, and this song's sure to be a Green Day classic.

Im pretty sure its about his dad. But also going with the whole political aspect of the album it can be about anybody who lost somebody on Sept 11

I agree when you guys say its about his dad and just overall losing everything you care about, but rather than "wake me up when september ends" meaning it can make you want to sleep for a month it means that maybe the month was just hard to believe, or maybe it was unforgettable and it all seems like some kind of dream

i really like this song, i think it's really pretty, and i really like this cd too. if this is the last cd that green day ever makes it wont matter because it sums up everything about their music.

Right now I'm going through a break-up and this song reminds me of how I feel right now. I wish I could just sleep and not wake up until everything was okay and we'd be going back out again.

"ya men this sock es rawk!

^ You people shut the fuck up... Right now.

This song seems to have the whole september 11th vibe running through it.. To be honest the whole cd seems to contradict itself with it's annoying patriotism and it's hate for america's government and the people who are close minded in america, that make up the majority.

This album will probably be the start of a downward spiral if they keep in this track.

I really like this song. My father died three years ago, and this song really pin-points how this affects a person. The time does fly, and the years just seem to pass, but each year, there's a time of the year (october for me), where you just want to crawl away, try sleep it away, go through it all again, bring back all the good memories, ending up with the last bad one. Then wait another year again.

It's about billie's father dead "Like my father come to pass..." What he is trying to say is that he lost part of his childhood and of his inocence when that happened. "Summer has come and pass the inocent can never last."
Probably his father died in September, so that why he doesn't like being "awake" at that time of year cause he "is drenched in his pain again."
The years had gone so fast, but there are times in which he feels he still has 10 years and then he realizes that time had flied and he is father is not around anymore.

Is one of my favorites of the new album. You get to feel the pain he tries to transmit.
