Lyrics for American Idiot as interpreted by animated456

American Idiot Lyrics
Don't wanna be an American idiot.
Don't want a nation under the new mania.
And can you hear the sound of hysteria?
The subliminal mindfuck America.

Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alien nation.
Everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
Well that's enough to argue.

Well maybe I'm the faggot America.
I'm not a part of a redneck agenda.
Now everybody do the propaganda.
And sing along in the age of paranoia.

Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alien nation.
Everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
Well that's enough to argue.

Don't wanna be an American idiot.
One nation controlled by the media.
Information nation of hysteria.
It's going out to idiot America.

Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alien nation.
Everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
Well that's enough to argue.

netadminrocker has a point. Why don't artists write some stuff to support our troops instead of demeaning America after 9/11. Oh yeah this song is awesome but I haven't heard any other songs on the album.

So this is what happens when pop-punk bands get political. A lot of persons begin to question their lyrics and why they got political. Artists, musicians, and anyone in general who "whines" about bush or the american goverment are not anti-america. Country and goverment are 2 completely different things. You can love this nation without loving the goverment and without sucking bushs ass. Which in my humble opinion, he is a terrorist and the worst president this nation has ever had. If you consider yourself a patriot do yourself a favor and learn the facts before waving the flag with pride, and most importantly, questioning people for raising their voices against the asshole AKA bush and his administration. Good song and great album.

It is funny how you liberal punk asses are always bitching about government but it's the Republican's that believe in less government. Man you guys are just ignorant. I enjoy putting you punk asses in your place in person. You guys never have anything good to say after your initial argument when I run into you guys. This song sucks ass!

From Awakenpunk in reference to President Bush:

"...Which in my humble opinion, he is a terrorist and the worst president this nation has ever had..."

You got anything to back that up? I mean I hear all this crap about how Bush is trying to bring back the draft which is total bullshit. And I hear how Cheney is making soooo much money by Halliburton being in Iraq, when in fact, Cheney resigned from Halliburton, and sold all his stock in Halliburton during the 2000 election. And to those of you who say there were no WMDs in Iraq, can you tell me what then killed the Kurds? And to those who say we shouldn't have gone over there in the first place, we wouldn't have if 3000 fellow Americans hadn't died on 9/11.

Bottom line: Shut the fuck up until you can back up what you say.

The WMDs he used to kill the kurds? You mean the weapons we fucking gave him? I don't remember anything on the news about WMDs there now. He used them before, nobody denies that, but he didn't have them when we invaded.

And you must remember, no matter what Cheny tells you, there were no ties between Saddam Hussein and Al-Qaeda.

That was the other country we invaded, Afghanistan. Don't you remember? Oh yeah, the war everyone forgot about when we invaded Iraq.

Have you been to Afghanistan? My girlfriend went there a few years ago (she's Afghani) when the Taliban was under control. At least then, you couldn't get away with murder.

She's told me how her uncle killed her grandmother because she pissed him off. It's called anarchy. The elections were rushed because they want to put Hamid Karzai in power (because he's in the pocket of Bush).

Did you know only Hamid Karzai got armed transport throughout the country to speak to the Afghani public?

15 candidates were running, Hamid Karzai won. All the 14 candidates that lost have joined together protesting that the election was fixed.

THE INK USED TO MARK YOUR VOTE WAS REMOVEABLE.

Bottom line: Shut the fuck ip until you can back up what you say.

Hate will always be hate and this nation will always be hated by the most pampered who live here.

This song just shows that the members of Green Day are controlled by the media too. The "Redneck" agendas and the "age of paranoia" don't exist if you turn off your television also.

BTW, look what i saw on MTV one day concerning the video for this song.:

http://tinyurl.com/4fbbf

It is up to you to determine if it is real or not based on your views of GD. It should make you think though. That American Idiot is meant to insult us by labelling us as close-minded poorly-educated subhumans. A common theme in the shallow culture of Hollywood and the music world to hate us all despite our political views. As long as it makes money. And nothing can make more if it than having a song and cd called "American Idiot."

Green Day are just a bunch of greedy fucks. What will be their complaint about this country when GW finishes his second term? What new insults will they come up with?

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you an ignorant.(grosshoppa).
What did I said you brainwashed moron? "learn the facts before questioning anyone who says anything against the goverment". Did I said I was gonna teach you? Did iI said I was going to exposed my views to you or anyone? No. You shut the fuck up and learn how to read. By the way, how did bush became president? He cheated, in case you have bad memory.

gator99- You can't make generalizations. I'm sure you have encounter dumb punks just like I have. I don't know about the rest here, but I'm not a democrat, I don't even like democracy or anything that exerts some sort of control. And there is no such thing as republicans that "believe in less goverment". A goverment is a goverment, no such thing as less or more when it comes to it.

Well... that's not really true. The things that various forms of government embody are, in many ways, varying in degree of control they exert over their constituency. Now, saying that republicans believe in less government is wrong, period. They believe in less taxes, overall, and keeping more of what you earn. Democrats belive that everyone should have every opportunity across the board, and they're willing to spend tax money to do it. A libertarian, on the other hand, does, truly, believe in "less government." Actually, they believe in about no government. The only cases where a libertarian should believe the gov't should step in is when one individual's absolute freedom is being impeded by another individual. And foreign policy and shite like that.

Other than that, yeah, I agree with pretty much everything else said (liberal-wise), just make sure and fact check, kiddies. Because if you don't, someone will, and then you'll look like a jackass.

A punk-pop band made up of millionaires who fill their album with shitty ignorant political rants against whoever their demographic of angry, idle, dope-smoking teenagers seem to hate most on any given day of the week.

Hooray! Just what I want to shell out $14.95 for! Where's my car keys? I'm going to Sam Goody!

This song isnt "jumping on the anti-bush bandwagon". The song is about the media, the only line about George Bush or politics at all is
"Well maybe I'm the faggot America.
I'm not a part of a redneck agenda."
This song is not just some shitty 'anti-bush propoganda'

If you bought the CD, then you know this song is more than a political status report. The Cd has been commented as a "rock opera" and it is, its the story of the average teenager that has huge ammounts of angst and for good reason too. This song is pretty much a status report through his eyes of America and what he thinks about how the people of a democratic nation who are whoring themselves to liberal media and conservative media news stations. In the song he refers to himself as a democrat, "maybe im the faggot america, not apart of a redneck agenda." This song is also the begining of a long assed rant that carries onto the next song (Jesus of Suburbia) on the cd, Its also the begining of his brain washing. (read the other comments on the rest of the songs from american idiot as through my eyes, the next song im reviewing is Jesus of suburbia from greenday)

I love how green day writes about the media brainwashing us, when they in fact are part of this media brainwash! i bet at least a couple hundred uninformed 18 year old retards are gonna go out and vote for kerry b/c thier all the sudden politically conscious idols green day took stabs at the current government. this is a great album, but this song and holiday are out of place on it, they are just bullshit political rants. and if anything, the media has a terribly liberal slant, especially young oriented channels like MTV. no stations talk about the iraqy children getting and education and all the great work the troops over there are doing, but once a civilian dies its all over the news 5 minutes later. its sad.

To every onewho has been going off about Green day having written the song to get attention: THey wrote the song to express what they believe in. WHat is music about if not to convey feelings and emotions. If you don't like their politics, fine. It doesn't change that they chose to express thier feelings in a well written song.

Oy, anyway those that believe this song is based purely on political partisanship or is anti-bush/anti-current government. You're thinking very narrow minded. Like spam_word said, consider the album as a whole. It's a Punk Rock Opera and each track relates to each other in some form or another and is in a linear time progression.

It begins with "Jesus", which I assume is the innocent version of St. Jimmy; This song starts the opera and is telling how "Jesus" is seeing how the world around him is not what he originally thought of it, he's seeing how what he originally perceived is not what it truly is, that everything is controlled by different groups that he wants no part of. It sets up the rest of the opera.

It really is a work of pure brilliance, out of context it can mean one thing but put it together with the rest of the opera, it then has an entirely different meaning and an actual story.
