Lyrics for American Idiot as interpreted by animated456

American Idiot Lyrics
Don't wanna be an American idiot.
Don't want a nation under the new mania.
And can you hear the sound of hysteria?
The subliminal mindfuck America.

Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alien nation.
Everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
Well that's enough to argue.

Well maybe I'm the faggot America.
I'm not a part of a redneck agenda.
Now everybody do the propaganda.
And sing along in the age of paranoia.

Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alien nation.
Everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
Well that's enough to argue.

Don't wanna be an American idiot.
One nation controlled by the media.
Information nation of hysteria.
It's going out to idiot America.

Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alien nation.
Everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
Well that's enough to argue.

Oops . . . I didn't know that i posted that twice . . . Sorry . . . Anyway . . Just one more thing . . . If anyone has come across a song with a greater number of comments than this one please reply thanks . . . . Adios . . .

Just a few typo corrections . . . I meant: ''it's their lack of concern for what other people think. . . '' and '' but just out there for the sake of . . . '' . . . . Apologies . . .

Gee . . . Look at the number of comments . . . . This totally beat the crap out of robert plant's stairway to heaven . . . Awesome . . . Green day has officially succeeded in global domination . . . Awesome . . . . I guess it's their lack of what other people think about what you think that makes them quite unique . . . In that they fear nothing when it comes to expressing a feeling or opinion . . . For this fact they are a highly respected band . . . Their songs are not written to simply sell albums . . . As many contemporary artists do . . . . However they are fulfilling their responsibities as musicians in the true sense . . . By making music to tell the world who they are and what they stand for . . . . Not many artists today have that kind of reputation . . . This is also clearly seen in the number of different side projects that billie joe has as well . . . Like pinhead gunpowder, foxboro hottubs, the network . . . Just to name a few . . . Which have not been commercially endorsed . . . But just not there for the sake of real music . . . May they forever continue upholding their truly legendary legacy . . .

Obviously a song about the media creating American idiots (or American idiots allowing the media to cause hysteria and tension) and that WE are not the ones meant to follow, meaning we should be smarter than this and be able to see through this biased media coverage with their scare tactics.
By redneck agenda he means the war in Iraq (WHY are we in Ira

I basically figured out the meaning of every song. The whole album is supposed to be a story, and Billie Joe also said in an interview that American Idiot is just supposed to be a photograph of what's going on right now. Since the whole album is about St. Jimmy, I've always seen this as St. Jimmy's opinion, like he realizes this then goes on to the rest of the album, and American Idiot is just like a basis of all the events in the rest of the song.

Saoirsefluffball - "Anyway i love it! i love the lyrics suits the song" - My god what a fucking retard!

"Why are there 2400 comments on a crappy pop song that has a meaning that can be figured out before you even hear it completely?" - Completely true.

Obviously about how the general population is just stupid media frenzied country running off fear and paranoia. Don't really need 2000 comments to say that.

BTW there is no direct attack upon Bush. Just every lazy fuck American who believes everything which on tv

The lyrics in this song are self explainatory, if you dont get them, then you were living under a rock for the last 8 years. Having said that, this song can be applied to the current Obama administration in the white house right now. He is using the way out of control media in this country to push his agenda just like bush did, only with Obama its all about the economy, and how much we need big brother government. Too bad that big brother government caused all these problems to begin with. Doesn't matter if their left or right, they all suck and only care about themselves and their agendas. All politions need to be kicked in the nuts on a daily basis!!!!!

if u think about it, this song is pretty patriotic. it means that he doesn't want his country to believe in the "propaganda" that the government is pushing on u

okay I can't read all of these lol but i love this song and on the first page i agree with mad_meerkat , to quote them " those that believe this song is based purely on political partisanship or is anti-bush/anti-current government. You're thinking very narrow minded. Like spam_word said, consider the album as a whole."

like that is so close to what i think

The song is about Hulk Hogan running for Presidency and how Green Day feels that Bob Backlund would be the man better suited to the job. The line:
"Don't want a nation under the new (Hulka) mania."
clearly references Hulk Hogan, but they had to cut a word out to make it fit their simplistic guitar work.

This song is REALLY about Lord of the Rings..
"We're not the ones who're meant to follow."
Obviously refering to the followers of Frodo! (the keeper of the ring)
