Lyrics for Holiday as interpreted by Biznoice

Holiday Lyrics
(Say hey!)

Hear the sound of the falling rain
Coming down like an Armageddon flame
The shame
The ones who died without a name

Hear the dogs howling out of key
To a hymn called Faith and Misery (Hey!)
And bleed, the company lost the war today!

I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives
On Holiday!

Hear the drum pounding out of time
Another protestor has crossed the line (Hey!)
To find, the money's on the other side

Can I get another Amen? (Amen!)
There's a flag wrapped around a score of men *Hey!)
A gag, a plastic bag on a monument

I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest our lives
On Holiday!

(Hey!)
(Say hey!)

(The representative from California has the floor"

Zieg Heil to the president gasman
Bombs away is your punishment
Pulverize the Eiffel towers
Who critiscize your government
Bang bang goes the broken glass and
Kill all the fags that don't agree
Trials by fire, setting fire
Is not a way that's meant for me
Just cause, just cause because we're outlaws yeah!

I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives
I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives ...

This is our lives on holiday!

Yep. Billie Joe just wastes his talent writing anti-political songs.
If he was *actually* against about alienating people through the media and making money off of bad politics, he wouldn't write music like this. What a hypocrite.

He has so much talent and musical genius. Why does he write songs about things like this?
It's the easy way, he could write music that was about something other than religion or politics.
I guess he doesn't have anything in his life besides stuff he doesn't like.

I'm actually writing a paper on this song and how its considered patriotic compared to Toby Keith's Courtesy of Red, White and Blue. Quick question though, what does "Trials by fire, setting fire" supposed to mean?

Do you think that maybe the chorus could mean that, the Bush administrators and followers are on Holiday as they ignorantly the mass effect of this war? The bar scene in the video would make sense that way.

This song is so un-american, But I can't help but love it.
All of Green Day's songs are anti-war, and just shots to the miltary..
But Green Day is still one of my favorite bands, just because they have a great sound...

(Believe me, I'm in no way anti-war or anything, My dad's in Iraq right now [One more week and he'll ba back home! :)] I honestly just like the way that the music sounds, and Billie Joe's voice.)

This isn't what I think of what the song is about but my mum came up with a very different meaning to what most people would have thought of. She says that the song is a very british song. She says it isn't about the us goverment or the war in iraq. She says that it is all about these people going on holiday. The plastic bag around the momenument is where a plastic bag got wrapped around blackpool tower which is refered to in the song as the eifel tower. "Here the sound of the puoring rain" is just the britsh weather and its started raining and everyone got out their umbrellas and thats why It sounded like a armegeddon flame. And the company man and all the rest of it is in a newspaper. I don't think its that but I still think its a funny interperation. Tell me what you think...

Okay, so I didn't bother to read through 15 pages of comments, but here's what I have. Billie Joe Armstrong in the live video of this song, Bullet in a Bible DVD, says, "And this next song is a big FUCK YOU to all the politicians. This song is HOLIDAY!" Then after they play the first few chords, "This song is not anti-American. Its anti-WAR!" That kinda clears the whole, "This song is so anti-American" thing up. Also, I know they hate Bush. American Idiot (song) is a Bush bashing song. I don't think this one is. they say FU to ALL the politicians. Not just Bush. They're anarchists. Anti-government. Also, during the solo, what does he shout right before the bassline starting at 2:16? It sounds like he shouts "GAY WAD!" I don't know. Maybe its just me. Finally, its "Trial by fires/set in flyers." Not "setting fires" I'm pretty sure.

First of all....amazing song. I'm so proud of Greenday.

Second of all...EVERYONE WHO HAS CRITIZED IT KNOWS NOTHING!

Greenday did a great job, they have the balls to put their minds out there.....even though its completely anti government. Have you done that?
NO! So dont even FUCKING try to judge whatsome else has done. Especially when they've done it with such convicton, who are you to say that they havent done well enough?

They've figured out so much, and they know so much about life that you could never imagine learning. And if you've figured these things out, you wouldnt be saying shit about someone thats expressing it.

First post ever: I'm not going to get political 'cause quite frankly that would make me look ignorant. When I got to know this song, I drew my meaning mostly from the chorus:

I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives
On Holiday!

You see, what I get out of it is (because this is the way I actually feel) the younger generation (dawning of the rest of our lives) is getting bombarded on one side with a bunch of political crap and on the other side with a bunch of cynacism instructing us not to believe the political crap (we're told it's all "hollow lies" and we don't want to be fooled) so basically the only stand point we can take is apathy. When we view politics and stuff apathetically, it's like the world is in a different place (on holiday) and we're expected to get a good start on the rest of our lives while everyone else is on holiday.

Okay I just read back over that and it didn't make as much sense as it does in my head, but does anyone get what I'm saying here?

I hate green day. they were so much better before they became overly popular. Plus George Bush cannont be compared to Adolf Hitler. A song like this is a fuck you to all of the soldiers who believe and died in this war. I say fuck green day.I dont agree with everything that Bush has done but i think he does his best.

This is a great anti-war song in my opinion. I'm not American but I do hate the Bush administration and how it thinks it can run the world and this song for me is about asking questions that they don't want you to ask like "how is not supporting your government being unpatriotic?" the US Government is not the USA. "Why is the US govt. going out of its way to take away American citizen's freedoms that they were given to them by the Treaty of Independence with things like the PATRIOT Act?" "why are America and Britain fighting a pointless war in Iraq and Afghanistan that they cannot win and where the only casualties are their own troops and civilians?". Is blowing up civilians really the best way to free them from "tyranny"? and "what really happened on 9/11 and 7/7?". This song is brilliant for anyone who like me, is suspicious and concerned about what George Bush, Dick Cheney and their entourage have in store for the world.

Ever since I've enlisted, the line "There's a flag wrapped around a score of men" has given me chills. I'm pretty sure it's referring to the fact that when a soldier dies, their coffin is covered with a flag.

I had a lot of respect for Green Day when they were less political. Yes, the majority of the time our president is an idiot. And putting out one political song once in a while is alright, but two on the same album is just overkill. The line in this song that really pisses me off is when he says "zieg heil" as if to compare Bush to Adolf Hitler. 9 of my family members were murdered in Auschwitz during the holocaust and Hitler was a monster. Bush is not a monster, he's just not what I would call world leader material. If you want to compare someone of modern times to Hitler, try the president of Iran who pledged to eliminate all Jews and Christians in the middle east and who also stated that the world would be better off if the US didn't exist. Get a little smarter people, Bush is not even close to Hitler.

Most of America when we first entered the war was "Either you with us or against us." We Changed the French fry to the freedom fry. But in World War II we did not want to go to war, and not fighting allowed France to be taken over and In Napoleonic times the French Ruled the whole western world. Maybe we become too selfish in or own security. My I say we have killed more Iraq and Afghan innocent citizens then in the attacks of 9-11

Get a clue people. You are reading too much into this. This is about Saddam and how he was a dictator to his people. "Sieg Heil to the president gasman" isn't referring to Bush, but referring to Saddam! Remember we are the people responsible (Bush for that matter) for freeing a country of people (millions for that matter) from a tyrant government. You think the people in the world pray to God when they are being tortured and oppressed? I don't think so, they pray to Mr. President (that is how Americans address our Commander and Chief). He is a person that freed a oppressed and tortured people, don't forget that is what America stands for.. Liberty and Freedom for it's people. Go out and smoke a joint, but remember that if you smoked that joint in Iraq before Bush, you would be killed!! Happy puffing you disgust me!!!
