It's way too late to be this locked inside ourselves
The trouble is that you're in love with someone else
It should be me
Oh, it should be me
Sacred parts, your get aways
You come along on summer days
Tenderly, tastefully

It's so me, we make time
Try to find somebody else
This place is mine

Set the day, you know exactly how I feel
I had my doubts little girl
I'm in love with something real
It could be me, that's changing

It's so me, we make time
To try and find somebody else
We pass a line

Now season with health
Two lovers walk on lakeside mile
Try pleasing with stealth, rodeo
See the stands long ending path

Oh, how I love you
And in the evening, when we are sleeping
We are sleeping
Oh, we are sleeping

It's so me, we make time
We try to find somebody else
Who has a line

Now season with health
Two lovers walk on lakeside mile
Try pleasing with stealth, rodeo
See the stands long ending path

My Interpretation:It is, indeed, about unrequited love.
"It's way too late to be this locked inside ourselves"
I think these two people know how the other feels and its pointless to keep covering it up. "Being locked", denying it.

"You come along on summer days
    Tenderly, tastefully"
Summer days are known to be fun and relaxing. Perhaps he's saying she makes his days like that. It can also mean that she's there (physically) only for a while. She's not permanently there, and will leave him some day.

"It's so me, we make time
    Try to find somebody else"
This is so obvious, he can't take her from his mind, so he starts doing other things, trying to go out with other people but its useless. He "tries".

They both know they can't be together no matter how much they want.

That's my interpretation I don't know if its correct but thats what I get from this song.

General Comment:Instead of "It's so me" it sounds like "And so may, we make time"

    and also,

instead of "Set the date" it sounds like "You said today"

My Opinion:I am amused to see this album/song is already over 7rs old.....I guess i fall in love 1 song at a time...this is the 4th time on this album. I heard it ...but didnt feel it until 2 weeks ago. I always dig their ambiguous and borderline nonsensical lyrics....but for me it will always be the music that touches me in that heartfelt way.....so buoyant and shifty.....makes me feel soo good...even when i dont.

General Comment:Said today, you know exactly how I feel
I had my doubts little girl
I'm in love with something real
It could be me, that's changing

I have wanted to say this to so many people in my life. It's about being completely ready to move on. LIke nothing can be said that will change your mind. All you can offer is a half hearted explanation, because in the end it doesn't really matter to you anymore. It's narcissistic, but there's still so much truth to it, at least to me.

General Comment:I don't know if it's a veiled reference or not, but the part "This place is mine" as made me thought at the character of Olimpia in the book "Love in the time of cholera".

General Comment:it sounds like he says "you said today, you know exactly how i feel." the "set the date" don't make sense at all. just noticed some of these lyrics are off and don't trust the original post nor' lyric booklets because even artist don't always post the real words.

General Comment:The intro in this song is the exact guitar from This Mortal Coil's "Not Me" (which is a dual cover of a Colin Newman song by the way). Don't take me wrong, because I am not complaining or calling Interpol rip offs. In fact it's the opposite, I LOVE that they have the same riff (intentionally or unintentionally I don't know, but I tend to think intentionally given their sound and influences).

Anyway, I figured I would point this out. Great song!

General Comment:I think the song is talking about how people fall ass-backward into marriage. People sometimes get married simply because they have spent "x" amount of years together and not necessarily for love.
"Set a date, you know exactly how I feel" is more like a dare than a profession of love. Both try to look for ways out, because they are too young "to be locked" into a marriage.
When he says his girl is "in love with someone else", I think he's talking about the girl being in love with her version of him, how she wants him to be, and not how he really is. And not his true nature. At least the way he knows himself to be, the side he hasn't shown her.
But, after enough time with her, he's changed, and he's softened on the idea of going through with it "I had my doubts little girl", "I'm in love with something real", he didn't need a piece of paper (marriage licensee) to be together, but "It could be me, that's changing" she wore him down and he's conceded to her desire of making it official and getting married.
So, in the past he, well really they both make excuses, or look for reasons why they shouldn't, "take time, look for somebody else."
But, they "pass a line" they come to a point in the relationship where it's either marry or break up, they get hitched because it's easier than breaking up.
And maybe they will eventually fall in love, realistically they go old together, if they live long enough to be one of the old couples walking around together in a park, "seasoned with health."

Anyway, that's the way I picture it.

General Comment:Can't this guy just being really interested by someone with whom he's (lets say) he's working with... But that same guy can't be with an other than the one he's with actually... Despite the fact that he's REALLY WITH her by his mind set on her... "we are slepping" doesn't mean sleep side-by-side... He's he thinking of her even in the evening? Night time?

See that i'm really into that wonderful track these days... The song talks this much to me that I can not see other meaning right now... Or is it just some misunderstanding between high french and low english? Peut-être... va savoir...

General Comment:No, this song is about a love that cannot be, but they both know that regardless of that they love each other and they both are "locked inside [theirselves]" but have to be with other people because they cant be together!
