Lyrics for Laid to Rest as interpreted by jc6md

Laid to Rest Lyrics
If there was a single day I could live
A single breath I could take
I'd trade all the others away

The blood's on the wall so you'd might as well just admit it
And bleach out the stains, commit to forgetting it
You're better off empty and blank than left with a single pathetic trace of this
Smother another failure, lay this to rest

Console yourself, you're better alone
Destroy yourself, see who gives a fuck
Absorb yourself, you're better alone
Destroy yourself

I'll chain you to the truth, for the truth shall set you free
I'll turn the screws of vengeance and bury you with honesty
I'll make all your dreams come to life, then slay them as quickly as they came
Smother another failure, lay this to rest

Console yourself, you're better alone
Destroy yourself, see who gives a fuck
Absorb yourself, you're better alone
Destroy yourself, see who gives a fuck

See who gives a fuck
See who gives a fuck

Failure

If there was a day I could live
If there was a single breath I could take
I'd trade all the others away
I'd trade all the others away

It says 'forget it' in the liner notes in the CD... which is where I got the lyrics from. It sounds more like 'admit it' though so thanks for correcting me.

And this song fucking destroys. Very powerful.

this song kicks some serious ass, but as for it's meaning, i think it might have something to do with a person finally being able to let go of their religious beliefs, since there are references to the bible within it, i.e. ".... the truth shall set you free", also (in regards to letting it go) "... you're better off empty and blank then left with a single pathetic trace..." to me, that right there is a representation of how hard it is to drill out the teachings that are engraved into a person raised in a religious family. whatever the case is, it's obvious that this is a very multilayered song and is what i think, i great way to herald metal's saviors (maybe?)

"If there was a single day I could live...
A single breath I could take
I'd trade all the others away"

Sounds like a life lived full of regrets. To be able start over again and live just a single day. No it's so important to undo what has been done I'd trade it all for a single breath. A single breath lived that I would live perfectly. My life to not be a waste.

"I'll chain you to the truth, for the truth shall set you free"

I think this could apply to a lot of different things. The world seems to be going to hell quickly. Most people don't realize what they are donig. Everyone is very selfish. Think of what the world would become if we all stoped being so self serving and helped each other.

"Console yourself, you're better alone
Destroy yourself, see who gives a fuck
Absorb yourself, you're better alone
Destroy yourself, see who gives a fuck "

More references to the self serving individual. If they are not in the world they won't make a real difference. Maybe if they had a single second they wouldn't fuck it up.

think the whole album has many political undertones and this song is about the regret of the war in Iraq.

Console yourself, you're better alone
Destroy yourself, see who gives a fuck
Absorb yourself, you're better alone
Destroy yourself

I think this is aimed at the US's leadership.

I'll chain you to the truth, for the truth shall set you free

Where are the weapons of mass destruction?

Smother another failure, lay this to rest

This war is a failure and should be laid to rest.

Just some thoughs.

well, i still think it's at least partly about the mind struggling to free itself from religion, seeing as "the truth shall set you free" is straight out of the bible, and in essence a person gets chained to the "truth" by the things they are taught by religious authorities throughout their lives. regarding the chorus, i think this is a little harder to disect, but i think of it like this, people often feel that god can console themselves, i think that the chorus is somebody speaking to religious person, saying, "look what this thing has done to you, trust me, everything you need is within yourself, you don't need this to get by, you're better by yourself". the next line is like, "look we don't care that this thing is ripping you apart". next line, "keep your problems to yourself, because we honestly can't help you. these are things you've got to figure out yourself, and neither us nor religion can save you." next line is a repeat of the the second. In my opinion this song's anti religious pinnings are fairly obvious, but then again, that's just me

i think its fucking ridiculous, so lets not even kid ourselves. "undertones" refers to something implied. this whole album is just a fucking blatant attack on george bush. no offense or anything, i dont love george bush (even if i like him better than kerry), but when a guy wears shirts a few days in a row that basically just say "fuck bush" i think its pretty obvious. i love the attitude of lamb of god's songs. theyre just like... completely pissed off time to kill somebody music, but the lyrics are repetitive and all about... of course.. once people hear something like this they take every single motherfucking line and try to interpret it as "george bush sucks". and i wont start preaching politics because politics are for asswipes, but here. i think this song is just about a relationship that went bad. in fact i think i read that in an interview somewhere or something. anyway... yeah... this is exactly how it feels. "better off empty and blank than left with a single pathetic trace of this" "destroy yourself... see who gives a fuck" etc. pretty much all of the lines are like that. this song is one of the few that doesnt seem, to me, to be an attack on gwb. anyway whatever. no offense meant at all to the person who used the word undertones... i just thought it was kinda funny when i read it :D

I do not think blatent is the right word to desribe the attacks. There are no specific names or relations mentions. That is why I used undertones.

Either way I do not think this song is about religion.

Laid to Rest is about when Randy whas newly christened as a christain when they left their "burn the priest" previous band. This song is about religion. He is trying to get across the point that laying all you failures and mistakes to rest...leaving without a patheitc trace of them...is better for yourslef...and this is what happened to randy after becoming a christain

Not all of their stuff relates to the war..ashes of the wake is alot about Lamb of Gods religous aspects mainly...like Hourglass and such...

in the begging quote "single day i could live id trade all the others a way" he is saying that if he could have come to being christened ealrier in his days he would have traded all the others away...rid his slate of all evil

this song is fuckin kick ass and so does Lamb of God. I recently saw them at the subliminal verses tour with Shadows Fall and Slipknot and they fuckin shook the joint. Although afther that Slipknot burned them.

Now i think this song is about the contience of someone who was responsible for someone elses death. It very well maybe the government who is responsible for the troops deaths or something else. If you read it then its kind of obvious.

yo, holymetalhead. The name Lamb of God is a joke. When the band was called Burn the Priest they couldn't get any venues because that was so satanic, so they as a joke they called themselves Lamb of God. Its IRONIC... its tongue in cheek. go listen to evanescence if you want jesusmusic.

don't know if this is a remotely close to correct interpretation, but for me it symbolized the end of anything painful. And moving past it. And accepting what is and moving on. I listened to this fucker over 50 times in the week after my girlfriend dumped me... its about stuff like that. just get past it and move on, no matter how much it hurts.

we can fucking argue about lamb of gods spiritualliy till the end of time but it doesnt fucking matter.....peopel interpret songs the way they want to...if a christain person wants to conform every song on here ot their ideas...thats great.....if a atheist wants to do the same....great.....not everybody will ever believe one thing....get hte fuck over it

"go listen to evanescence if you want jesusmusic."

People dismiss Christianity when it comes to good music, but alot of good metal and hardcore bands are christian. As i Lay Dying, ZAO, The Chariot, Norma Jean, Society's Finest and The Black Dahlia Murder - just to name a few. I'm just tryin to say that you don't have to be a cunt about it.

"On another note who gives a fuck if Randy is Christian or not they he\'s an amazing vocalist and thats all that matters"

EXACTLY Oh yeah, and i was kidding about BDM being Christain
